This artist started his career as a hokum blues and ragtime pianist, co-writing classics like "It's Tight Like That" with Tampa Red. Later, he became an important gospel composer, with songs such as "Take My Hand Precious Lord" and "Peace in the Valley". His songs have been recorded by BB King, Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson and Jorma Kaukonen. Name the artist...

Nope, but another interesting guess! Here's another clue for you: the artist was recently mentioned on a Fur Peace Ranch broadcast by Jorma Kaukonen....

Thomas Dorsey - black gospel composer, known as "The Father of American Gospel Music". I can't believe I had to google that, I watched the Jorma Fur Peace show where he mentioned Dorsey and played a song by him, but it flew in one ear and right out the other. I was too busy envying his arsenal of incredible axes I guess.

Ok - Double Whammy! Name this member and the band - she was once the keyboard player of this well known British band for a time. After this keyboard player left the group this band later won a Grammy in the Metal category.

Jethro Tull and David/Dee Palmer. (I admit I had to look up the keyboardist's name on wikipedia, but I did remember that Tull won one of the first Grammy awards for the "Metal" category, which totally pissed off all the real metal bands at that time, since Tull is NOT a metal band. But I like them anyway.)

During the formative moments of this group, someone wanted to name the band "Beelzebub". However, this name was rejected in favor of a less sinister sounding name. Name the band.

This is a fun thread; I hope to do it justice!

This band was formed in 1967, and has gone through many changes of personnel and leaders. (Near as I can tell, they have never disbanded.) They were formed from previous members of the Blues Project, Mothers of Invention, and others. They played at Woodstock in 1969 and at the Fillmore East venue before it was the Fillmore East.

Their founding band leader left after their first album, which had sold well. After he left, their second album went multi- multi-platinum.

Members of the band have included a previous member of Edgar Winter's White Trash, a future member of Rare Earth, a future member of the Brecker Brothers, and Jaco Pastorius.

The founding band leader went on to become a session musician, record producer, and solo artist. He has written or co-written or played on songs for Leo Sayer, Gene Pitney, the Banana Splits, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Bob Dylan. He sometimes plays in a band that includes Dave Barry and Stephen King.

Name that band!

Al Kooper's book Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards briefed me for that one.

Gotta take a little time figure one out - this is a tough crowd.

Interviewer: Is it true . ... (spoilers edited) . . . that you were approached to front AC/DC when Bon Scott died?

Unidentified artist: Yes. It is true. I was approached. AC/DC did offer me the job, and I turned it down - so they went and got the guy from the band Geordie, Brian Johnson, who sounded exactly like me anyway.

What band was this mystery artist from?

Nope not Judas Priest. Good shot in the dark, am thinking you were aiming for the "sounds like" .

more clues- while this band never saw success in the US, in the early 80s an American heavy metal band broke thru to #5 with a song by our mystery band that years earlier had been #1 in the UK but barely limped onto US charts at #98.

You got it, Slade is correct. Their song Cum On Feel the Noize was the #5 US chart hit for Quiet Riot in 1981, who also charted at #50something with Slade's Mama Weer All Crazee Now

Almost unknown here, but Slade was HUGE in the UK, here are some phenomenal stats from wiki:

Slade are an English rock band formed in Wolverhampton in 1966. They rose to prominence during the glam rock era in the early 1970s, achieving 17 consecutive top 20 hits and six number ones on the UK Singles Chart. The British Hit Singles & Albums names them the most successful British group of the 1970s based on sales of singles. They were the first act to have three singles enter the charts at number one; all six of the band's chart-toppers were penned by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea. As of 2006, total UK sales stand at 6,520,171, and their best-selling single, "Merry Xmas Everybody", has sold in excess of one million copies. According to the 1999 BBC documentary It's Slade, the band have sold over 50 million records worldwide.

Probably sounds too obscure, it isn't. Here is another clue:

This album went on to become one of the top rock albums of all time, and it became this band's best selling album.
