FBI arrests 3 members of white supremacist group planning to attend Richmond pro-gun rally

https://wtvr.com/2020/01/16/3-members-of-white-supremacist-group-planning-t o-attend-virginia-pro-gun-rally/

RICHMOND, Va. -- Three members of a white supremacist group were arrested by the FBI early Thursday morning in Delaware and Maryland, according to Dave Fitz, a spokesman for the FBI’s Baltimore field office.

The three men were members of a neo-Nazi group known as The Base, which describes itself as an international network that is training its members to fight in a race war, according to the Counter Extremism Project.

A law enforcement official tells CNN that they believe men were planning to attend a pro-gun rally in Richmond on Monday.

The men have been identified as 33-year-old Brian Mark Lemley Jr., William 19-year-old Garfield Bilbrough IV, and 27-year-old Patrik Jordan Mathews.

They have been charged with multiple firearms and immigration-related offenses and are expected to appear in a Maryland federal court later Thursday.

Lemley Jr is accused of transporting a machine gun, as well as transporting a firearm and ammunition with intent to commit a felony, according to court documents.

Lemley and Bilbrough are also accused of transporting and harboring Mathews. a Canadian citizen and a former combat engineer in the Canadian Army Reserve, who is accused of illegally crossing into the US from Canada in August.

Mathews has been charged with transporting a firearm and ammunition with intent to commit a felony and being an alien in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Patrik Jordan Mathews

CNN reports that Lemley and Matthews allegedly purchased more than 1,600 rounds of ammunition earlier this month, and practiced using the assault rifle at a gun range in Maryland, where FBI agents had set up a hidden camera to secretly record them as they practiced shooting, according to a criminal complaint.

The arrested come after Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam declared a temporary emergency ban on all weapons, including guns, from Capitol Square Friday through Tuesday ahead of the massive gun rights rally.

"We have received credible intelligence from our law enforcement agencies of threats of violence surrounding the demonstration planned for Monday," Northam said during a Wednesday news conference. "This includes extremist rhetoric similar to what has been seen before major incidents, such as Charlottesville in 2017."

Northam said militia and hate groups, some from out of state, plan to come to Virginia's Capitol to "disrupt our democratic process with acts of violence."

Examples, according to Northam, include "threats of storming our Capitol," weaponizing drones over Capitol Square and individuals conducting surveillance operations on Capitol entrances and exits.

Northam stressed the ban was temporary and will end when the state of emergency ends.

"The Counter Extremism Project" . . . what a cockamamie absurd joke. I am kind and respectful towards everyone, so therefore these white spermracist nazis do not exist and they are just a few good ol boys being unfairly labeled by the Left.

Cool your jets turbo. I am not for one moment "Doubting their existence"....I just don't see it as the extremely threatening scenario you believe it to be.

Kind of similar to your thoughts on views concerning Illegal Aliens...."They are there, but how big a threat are they"?

Is the illegal Canadian alien that manufactures machine guns, networks, recruits and trains for a Neo Nazi group a bigger threat than someone coming here to work and make a better life for their family fleeing gang violence?
Oh right guns and white immigrants are a good thing.

He can’t help it. He seems to be one of those angry “working class” types who fell for the rich ruling class tactic of turning the working class against itself based on ethnic heritage.
For him to come to that realization at this point would crush his illusion that he is somehow better than everyone else because he’s UnnAmmmmurican.

Trust me, being working class is a lot more gratifying when you stand in solidarity with your brothers and sisters instead of bending to the will of those who want you stay subservient.

Now if anyone should choose to be offended by that, I suppose that’s their problem.

Anyway yeah, “White Rage” seems like an excellent read for anyone who can get over being offended by the title.

Am a little ways into "The New Jim Crow", excellent, thx for the recommend lukester.

(Or I suppose I could just knee jerk at the title and hack up some ignorant bile like:' "The New Jim Crow" . . . what a joke', panning a book that I have zero idea what it is about, because I find the title offensive. And then when asked to elaborate I could just throw down an accusation of intolerance of narrative. Then crap all over the thread with vague insinuations and cry that I am being persecuted when folks draw the obvious conclusion.)

Back to his point though, do you truly believe that hate groups and racist ideologies do NOT pose some level of a threat to minorities? Maybe there's no threat if the common worker hates minorities and keeps it to himself, but what about people in positions of authority who have power of thousands of people at a company, or millions in a city?

BIGV, here's an example from today's news from USA Today about Monday's march.

quote:
Three more suspected neo-Nazis connected to a white nationalist group that reportedly planned to have members at a gun rights rally in Virginia have been arrested, authorities say.

Three Georgia men were arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and participating in a criminal street gang as part of the hate group, The Base, according to the Floyd County Police Department.

News of the arrests come a day after three other suspected members of The Base were arrested in Maryland on firearms and alien-harboring charges.

The three Georgia men, identified as Luke Austin Lane of Floyd County, Michael Helterbrand of Dalton and Jacob Kaderli of Dacula, were planning to "overthrow the government and murder a Bartow County couple," Floyd County police said in a statement.

The Base, the group of which the six men arrested this week allegedly are members, has been identified as a hate group committed to creating a white ethno-state. Police in Georgia say the group, founded around July 2018, seeks to "accelerate the downfall of the United States government, incite a race war and establish a white ethno-state."

One of the men arrested in Maryland, Patrik Jordan Mathews, 27, is a former Canadian Armed Forces reservist who was dismissed over ties to white supremacists; he allegedly entered the U.S. illegally in August.

According to an arrest affidavit, the Georgia men were arrested in connection with an undercover FBI operation during which an agent was accepted into the group and gained access to its encrypted online messaging applications.

The three men allegedly planned to murder a couple they believed to members of Antifa, the anti-fascist group. According to an arrest affidavit, Lane spearheaded the plot to kill the couple with the help of Kaderli and Helterbrand, however, the operation was delayed, in part because Helterbrand said he had a bad back.

On at least two occasions, the men along with the undercover agent drove to the couple's house to scope it out, the affidavit says. They also discussed burning the house down after the hit, the affidavit says.

At one point in the planning, the men discussed what would happen if their victims had children. Lane told Helterbrand they would "probably just leave them," but Helterbrand said he'd have "no problem killing a commie kid," the affidavit says.

The men allegedly settled on a February date to commit the murders. Lane also identified future targets who were members of television media, the affidavit says.

Lane also allegedly said he wanted to kill other members of The Base who knew about the plot and whom he feared would discuss it. According to the affidavit, a member of The Base in Maryland and one who had recently entered the United State illegally were his targets, however, those members were not named.

The affidavit describes the group as operating with regional cells for security purposes.

In Maryland, prosecutors said at a court hearing Wednesday that one of the men compared The Base to al-Qaida and discussed traveling to Ukraine to fight alongside "nationalists."

Prosecutors say Brian Mark Lemley Jr., 33, and William Garfield Bilbrough IV, 19, traveled to Michigan last year to pick up Mathews. The men have allegedly operated in Maryland and Delaware since, building an assault rifle, amassing ammo and trying to make DMT, a hallucinogenic drug, as they discussed The Base's activities.

The New York Times reported that The Base has become a growing concern for the FBI as the group recruits more people.

I don't see the problem w/the gov's state of emergency for what's now being called The Boogaloo in the former capitol of the Confederacy. The Light Foot Militia, banned in Charlottesville after that "rally" & white nationalist Richard Spencer who is a defendant in a case arising from Charlottesville will be attending.

The legislation that's so terrible?

After 12 people were killed in a mass shooting in Virginia Beach in the last year, the lower state house passed legislation to: 1) limit purchases of handguns to one each month; 2) require background checks; and 3) allow local governments to ban guns in parks and public buildings (choice not requirement).

I have no idea about the layout of downtown Richmond or what businesses might be open on a holiday weekend, but a ban on guns confined to the site of The Boogaloo aka The Lobby seems pretty tame.

let's see Cyclone. Did you forget that the governor wants to use the national guard to search houses for firearms, any firearms?
How about they want to shut down privately owned firing ranges?
That the Virginia governor is himself someone who has professed white supremacy in the past?
In the Executive Order the governor describes the rally as a coming together for "violence, rioting, and insurrection".
Do a search and see how many anti-firearm laws and regulations are being proposed in the Virginia legislature.
If you don't like a proposed law, wouldn't you protest it during the legislative session.

Lastly, did you know that this is called the Lobby Day Rally, and is an annual event?
I do hope that the governor will make sure the same restrictions in his Executive Order is imposed for those
who oppose the rally since those attending the rally have the right of equal protection under the law.
I'm still wondering when a helmet became a weapon.

Probably when people began swinging them at each other.
Seriously who brings SWAT and riot gear to a "peaceful lobbying demonstration".

There's protection then there's intimidation, if you feel the need to bring riot shields and a helmet to a rally I have to question your intentions.

Six people were caught red handed planning to cause mayhem and violence that are part of a Neo Nazi group but we're still looking for reasons to stick up for these idiots.

Whatever my beliefs were, if i constantly found myself on the same side of Neo Nazis I would probably be forced to reevaluate my my life.

The post to which I responded was about the firearms ban on the Capitol grounds for the weekend when the annual lobby day was going to address the 3 issues the lower state house has ALREADY passed. I confined my response to that as I don't follow Virginia politics.

Otherwise, I've no opinion on books I haven't read which seems to be the topic of the thread so have nothing more to say.

I'm far more interested in getting a response to my Laid Back re-issue question as to how Mercury - a label that no longer exists in any form that I know of - can be the producer. Perhaps no one knows the answer.

Have you seen anything anywhere that links the rally itself with Neo-Nazis? How many times have you seen groups that had no connection at all with what was going on show up and cause trouble at protests and marches? The Virginia governor is doing his best to convince people that the rally is to cause "violence, rioting, and insurrection", and has tried his best to stop a legal, annual, happening.
Lobby Day is there for citizens to show up and present their reasons to not pass legislation they think is not needed or detrimental to their group.
The firearms owner groups can still carry their firearms in Richmond, they just won't be able to bring them onto the Capitol grounds, or in the location where the yearly protests are held since he declared an open area a "shelter".
I don't need to reevaluate my life because of some people that hate.
