July 17 1914
July 17 1918
A pair of 21 inning games - & not a reliever in sight
Not only that, Pirates’ Babe Adams Allows No Walks, but still loses 3-1 to Rube Marquard & Giants in the 1914 game

4 yrs later, Phila’s Milt Watson outlasts Cubs’ Lefty Tyler 2-1 in 21 innings

In their zeal to safeguard their pitchers’ mental health by minimizing their IPs, teams today would run out of pitchers long before a game got to this point

If today’s Ps read this, it would literally cause sore arms as they strained to comprehend it all
“It’s not possible!!”
“They had to have had the equivalent of steroids, only w/5 times the kick, to go 21 IP!”

Always enjoy reading about the greats from when it was a game
HI BELL, for instance
Beat Braves 1st game of dblhdr
Felt fine, got cleaned up, probly a shower, quick bite to eat, wash it down w/a beer, have a smoke, sit down w/catcher.....
& do it again
allowing two runs pitching all 18 innings in complete-game wins
Yes the glory of their times
& yes Virginia, it’s not fiction - it did happen (July 19 1924, Sportsman Park, St.L)
Cardinals RHP Hi Bell, an immortal

Q: Who was the last P to start both games of a dblhdr
A: Wilbah Wood, 1973
The knuckleballing ChiSox LHP didn’t fare as well as Hi Bell - started 2nd game after not getting outta 1st inning of 1st game, took that loss also (nightcap) in NY

Wilbur Wood, the pride of Lexington Mass - a heyday of 4 straight 20-win seasons - likely the last to win 20 & lose 20 (24-20, also ‘73)

In contrast to his 1st eight years, when he had a combined 5-12 record - bizarro

So I just got home from an appointment and I flip on The MLB Network. Houston vs. KC. The Royals have a left handed pitched with the last name of "Lovelady". Poor guy. The Astros were lighting up Lovelady.

Like canned laughter, artificially piped-in cheers & boos as our heroes take the field to empty seats & supposedly-breathless cyberfans
Haven’t read that masks are mandatory in dugouts, & for catchers & ump - how can they justify no fans -

At least no fans is better than partial fans, w/masks mandatory - that woulda been ludicrous
It’s Nuts - radio said recently, Nats need five busses for the trip to Baltimore - so many people per bus, six feet apart, masked

There’s not a dry eye in the house as, on the day NY celebrates Babe Ruth’s 100th birthday, a frail Mickey Mantle bids Yankee fans farewell in a Jumbotron message, saying “I feel like Phil Rizzuto In Babe Ruth’s uniform” - Mickey will pass away of liver cancer 22 days later

Same seven years later at Fenway, when more than 20,000 fans and the country pay tribute to the life of Ted Williams, who had died 17 days earlier, July 5 1995

I think it's about controlling the environment for the players who can be tested regularly. Other than taking temperatures at the gate, even with masks, fans are a COVID wild card. Because you know MLB would take their money if they could, but the season is tenuous enough.

Blue Jays will play their games in...uh...Pittsburgh? I guess without home fans, what does it matter? Pittsburgh is lovely in the the Summer.

The Cubs / Sox games were on the other two nights and the broadcasts were well done as well as what they did in the stadiums. They announced the players just as they would for a real game when they came to bat. The piped in noise which was certainly kind of odd but I imagine they were trying to create some sense of normalcy.

The Cubs announcers I thought did a great job of trying to make it seem like a regular environment the first night. Talked about the upcoming season as if they were in Arizona in March calling a spring season game.

Does it suck? Of course it does. But I have to at least give people props for trying.

I shouldn’t say anything, my interest in MLB has waned for a long time
Still doesn’t sit the right way tho - too much like lip syncing, where the singers lip synch to recorded music - the blandness of playing in empty stadiums......baseball shouldn’t be played that way - it’s too forced, too contrived -

What if the people administering the cheers & boos make a mistake - what if a soundtrack has a glitch & loud boos came on say, when Xander hit one out at Fenway.... - that’d be hilarious

Conversely, “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” means nothing anymore - how sad is that

The whole situation seems somewhat contrived. Lots of HUGE salaries to pay and Baseball, unlike the NFL makes it $$ at the gate...

We'll see...

Am quite sure teams realize big $ from TV contracts - but yes it’s mostly at the gate, & w/no fans, combined with no concessions income - two key revenue sources, gonzo
As you said, we’ll see....

The state of Pennsylvania denies the Blue Jays a temporary home in Pittsburgh. Could they be on the road the whole season?

I think Macon could handle two minor league and one major league teams for the summer.

If you are referencing baseball with big $$ from TV, I would question that. No Monday nights to a huge national audience, No Thursday night, no Sunday package where all the games are on. I would counter with no way is baseball even in that conversation when it comes to TV $$. They need the gate, the concessions, souvenirs and to a degree, so does football......but.

If you hated the 1-game Wild Card like me, you're going to hate MLB's new 16 team playoff setup that's been approved.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/29525547/mlb-players-union-oks-playoff- expansion-2020-sources-say

quote:
The Major League Baseball Players Association has agreed to a plan to expand the playoffs to 16 teams for the 2020 season, sources told ESPN's Marly Rivera.

A playoff expansion still needs the final approval of MLB owners, sources said.

All second-place teams in the six divisions will qualify for the playoffs, sources said. Then the seventh and eigth teams in both leagues will be chosen by best record among other teams.

Sources said an important aspect for the players was player and family housing and access to the stadium during the playoffs.

If a 16-team format is adopted, it would include a televised postseason-seeding show in which top-seeded teams pick their first-round opponents, a source told ESPN's Buster Olney on Thursday.

More teams? Certainly breaks with tradition. With 30 teams, there are more and more teams on the playoff bubble - but isn't that what makes August and September so exciting?

At least I understand getting more fans involved in postseason baseball, but producing a TV show where teams pick their opponent as if this were the school yard? Seriously? Just let 'em play!

I can usually roll with format changes but this is one of the worst ideas in pro sports ever. I was really hoping this was just meaningless chatter.

Agree again.....Could it be any more clear?...That this is an attempt to recoup the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ lost?.....Baseball is in trouble, just look at some of the contracts! NO gate this season. Other than a legitimate playoff series, who is glued to the TV for baseball?

Not going to argue baseball isn't looking for ways to make money, but this playoff format has been rumored since the offseason.

Listened to the Yankee game on the radio last night. Well, innings 4-6. Almost sounded like real baseball.

If I understand it, 16 of the 30 teams are in the playoffs. Odds are there will be a team of two in with a losing record. God, they are going to make it as bad as the NHL and NBA.

The Cleveland Baseball Team is playing its season opener tonite!!!
Yes in their home by the lake, the Indi, Dangit, apologies - The Team lake, I mean lake team........
LAKERS - that’s it
The LA Basketball Team only has its name b/c of its origins in Minnesota - “The Land Of 10,000 Lakes”
Lake Erie would dwarf all them combined - Lakers shouldn’t piss anyone off too much (xcept Indians fans) - it’s common, entirely predictable & safe - it would also fit within the prescribed parameters of being PC

Can everyone say Cleveland Lakers
Yes I know, not possible when yawning

mets won, Braves lost 1-0. Still a good game, several "almost" home runs, heroic runs and catches, exciting base play, oh, and the Mets were there too.

Could the Cleveland team be called the Cuyahogas? Uniform could have a broad, twisty streak of blue that has flames erupting from it.

(in all seriousness)
For The 2019 Record, Bravo Stephen
Didn’t Miss A Start - 18-6, then couldn’t be touched in postseason - 5-0, 1.98 ERA, 36 Ks in 33 IP - & Just 4 Walks - the greatest postseason pitching ever, concluding an awesome overall mark of 23-6

Sandy Koufax himself was in awe
Sandy had a 10 year career
Stephen completed his 10th last year - 112-58 record, 1,695 Ks in 1,400+ IP
That’s Koufaxian, as the #s show
Sandy, 116-97, including a sick 96-27 over his last five years - 2,434 IP, 2,396 Ks

Sandy had his so-so 1st 5 years, Stephen has had all the injuries - so some dynamics there in comparing the careers of these two greats - ‘Stras’ would be a lot closer to Koufax but for the missed time & restricted IPs

But the point is, after a great season he amped up another notch or two on the big stage in leading Wash to World Series title - mad ups, he’d never shown that kind of endurance b4
