I feel for Shohei Ohtani - but also for the dashed expectations of Angels fans - & their owners who paid a kings ransom for him

All he did was DH this year but he still couldn’t hack it physically
Now they’ve discovered why - “a bipartite patella on his left knee...a congenital condition”

Two years into his much heralded career & 2 major operations, one for a congenital condition
- doubt they’ll have much choice from now on but to use him minimally in the field, less than that on the mound

He’s young, hopefully he bounces back - maybe he’ll have a Stephen-like physical renaissance later in his career - sure enough, 17-6 w/3 more starts slated - 9 innings shy of 200 IP for just the 2nd time in his career

No one could’ve guessed Oakland would have the season they’re having w/Khris Davis in a season-long slump - they signed him to a big contract extension in April too - but A’s a Solid dark horse pick - Oakland-Atlanta is just as good a WS pick as NY-LA - A’s gotta make it 1st tho - but amazing what they’ve done this year, also w/out Manea, their top P - think he just recently returned - so did Cueto for SF, also Severino for NY - missing whole seasons or more is nothing in the game now

On sept 16 2006, Washington’s Alfonso Soriano became the 4th player ever to make 40 HR & 40 SB
Atlanta’s Acuna Jr is at 39/36, but also has slumped to .276 & been stuck at 36 SB for awhile now it seems

Also ‘on this day’ two players playing for the Twins at the end of their great careers, Dave Winfield (1993) and Paul Molitor (1996), gained their 3,000th hits

It’s Wash (82-66) vs St.L (83-66) tonite & can Stephen help Nats pass Cards & keep alive a possible 20 win season & the Cy w/his league leading 18th win In this critical series - yep he’s done it - no injuries this season - even the old Félix returned Sat nite, so ya never know

W/out Christian Yelich, Braun & Brewiz are smokin
With their top rated pitching staffs intact, Nats & Mets are slipping
So yeah ya never know - a TB-LA WS? Not Far Fetched, Rays visiting Chavez Ravine - TB 2018 Cy winner Blake Snell returns tonite

Leadoff hitter Mike Y should get a big ovation his 1st at-bat - for the 1st time in 36 years, a Yastrzemski stepping up to the plate at Fenway Pahk
Carl will be there tmrw nite they’re saying
Let’s go Sox

Yeah, Brewers could actually win the Central with STL and CHI battling each other. They were surging before Yelich went down, but their remaining schedule is pretty cushy.

I agree. Flubs/Cards can beat each other up and with the Beer Drinkers' schedule, they could definitely win the division. Wouldn't that be something?

Ups to Bruce Bochy, 2,000 career wins - only the 11th mgr to make that milestone

I guess the Braves are suffering from that yearly malady called postseasonalgoofoffious.

Funny, I have always remembered him more as a catcher than a manager but I was a lot younger then. Of course, he has had more success as a manager.

A LOT of good managers were once catchers.

Why? They are going to win the division. And there is no way they could be as bad in the post season as those Braves in the early 90s. How on earth they didn't win it all the time with that pitching staff is beyond me.

They should have clinched the division on Tuesday. They didn't. Should have clinched on Wednesday. They didn't. Should have clinched today, but didn't.
Once they got the playoff berth, they started losing. Very reminiscent of previous seasons.

Yep, him, Sciocia, Girardi, Torre, Yogi, Joe Maddon, Bob Melvin, Darrell Johnson, John McNamara, Birdie Tebbets....& the great Connie Mack

Birdie played for Sox, managed Tribe - now that we’re spoilers we can help Chief Wahoo by beating TB - Tribe can help bounce Phil same-time - Cards-Cubs another crucial series, looking more & more like the 2 NL WCs will come outta Central

Managed NYY to 1964 pennant, NYM to 1973 championship -
didn’t go as well working for the Boss years later tho
“Yogi will be my manager this season no matter what” thundered George prior to 1985 season
16 games in, Yogi was history

both were pennants, 1973 Mets lost the World Series to Reggie Jackson's A's

Quick facts:
- 1973 Mets were 82-79, the fewest wins of any pennant winner
- Game 2 of the WS featured Willie Mays's last hit.

Not saying Yogi was a bad manager; I just don't think he had a ton of success doing so. If you sit back and think about it, I don't believe there were a lot of successful managers that were great players and vise versa. Take LaRussa and Sparky Anderson for instance. Great managers, not great players. On the other side of that coin you had Ted Williams. One of the best players ever. Didn't have success as a manager. Granted, he had a crappy team.

Of course you can always come up with examples the other way.

Thanks, that’s right - funny how sports trivia is a barometer for my brain/memory “compared to before” haha - cool factoids too - dfrnt subject, Willie & Hank - began in NY/Mil - moved to SF/Atlanta - then finished back where it all began
Hope your Brew Crew makes it, they won again tonite, hellAcious races in both leagues - Indians, A’s & TB all won tonite too

Boston Red Sox, I live & die with em - don’t care about seeing em use 29 pitchers per game but that’s the game now -
wait til next year

There it is - we’ve used basically our whole pitching staff - 9 innings, 9 pitchers - here come the position players - will never understand this trend in the game

Stephen for instance - removed from game while in top form en route to his 18th win & a 4-0 lead in critical game at lowly Miami
But going from Stephen to Fernando Rodney, the pitches would suddenly look fat to even the Miami’s - yep it’s 4-4 last check
Bi-zarre

I just had this discussion with a buddy of mine. Old timer. We were talking about how many wins starting pitchers will get anymore and we agreed "not that many". They take them out of the game so early that they won't get as many decisions as they used to.

I say let them pitch six or seven innings.

Absolutely- look at the Cubs-st.L game ystrdy - what fan would rather see a continuous parade of nameless nervous Ps throwing 0.2, 1 IP or 10-12 pitches, compared to Yu D & Miles M locking horns like that - where’s the strategic benefit in it -

Ups to Darvish, he’s saying eff this baloney too, he wanted to be out there for the 9th inning - he’s had 3 straight games of 12 or more Ks & it’s a shame to see that vanishing outta the game, along with, as you pointed out 20 game winners, CGs etc

“On this day” 4 instance, Steve Carlton beat St.L, the team that drafted him, for his 300th win
The Lefty’s, the Rocket’s, all the great Ps - ..they wouldn’t take this stuff sittin down either IMO -

Just too bad to see potential 300 game winners & dominant starters phased outta baseball - those Bull **** pitch counts have ruined it, guys come outta the game whether they’re pitching good or not, it’s sterile/antiseptic/predictable/boring safety-first Crap
But am a lifelong fan & will never not follow it or stop cheering for BoSox

In fairness, Verlander & Cole have both been dominant this season - near impossible to pick for Cy
Cubs’ Castellanos (58) - is trying to become 1st w/60 doubles since 1936 - Acuna Jr 3 steals from a 40/40 season
Also on this day Craig Biggio became 2nd ever to 50 steals & 50 doubles, joining Tris Speaker

First Bruce Bochy, 64 - now Ned Yost, 65, is retiring w/Joe Maddon, also 65, not far behind if the rumors mean anything

Clay was hammered in his final outing tonite - they’ve gone to position players pitching in that game (14th inning)
It’s Felix’ Seattle finale Thursday - he hasn’t announced his retirement or anything, But....
can’t see either career continuing but ya never know

They sure don’t build stadiums like they used to - not in Texas anyway, where they’re closing the stadium that opened in 1994 - wtf
Wait til next year
