Cataract surgery is supposed to be simple, but in my case it was not. I have had two retinal detachments in one eye, so perhaps the surgeon should have know it would not be so simple. He was not able to use the intended lens, and the substitute was put in upside down.

The lens is symmetrical, so I could still see, but since there are other issues, on Friday I will have another procedure to put in a different type of lens, and hopefully it will be right side up.

If you are not squeamish, you can see what will be done to me on Friday:

After the initial shock wore off, I was pretty calm about it, but now that another surgery is coming up, I am feeling a bit spooked. Your prayers would be greatly appreciated!!!

Alan, you've got my thoughts and prayers in your corner!

I know that you are a very good photographer, so your eyes are very important. I'm very sure that everything will go well. And if things come out looking upside down, practice standing on your head!

Good luck Alan, I'll be facing that sometime soon. My ophthalmologist informed me two years ago I'd be needing it at some point.

You think every eye Dr. knows everything about the eyes but that is not the case. I went to five before finding one who knew what my problem was. The eye docs are specialized so a retina specialist would have known or did tests to check your retinas. I thought I just had an infection that would not heal, I went to 3 Dr.'s who all prescribed drops that did not help me. I went to NYC and found a Dr. who knew everything that was wrong with my eyes but he specialized in dry eyes, 'tear film insufficiency' which can be caused by different things including lipids, lack of Omega 3's, genetic causes, allergy drugs that dry the eyes etc. He also told me I had a genetic disease called map dot fingerprint dystrophy which can cause the retinas to tear away from the eyes without warning, and I had ocular rosacea which was the brunt of my problems causing the redness, soreness, swelling.

Now I try to manage the rosacea, with diet, lid cleansing, and I use some ointment at night so that they stay moist. During the day I use moisturizing drops, if I get really bad I have cortisone drops I can use also.

Five eye Dr.'s including two ophthalmic plastic surgeons one of whom I told , look these Dr's are all nice enough, but something is wrong and I don't want to go blind, can you give me a proper diagnosis? He knew about the rosacea.

Rosacea is an autoimmune vascular disease, most people have it on the skin, their face gets red, but it is not just a skin disease. It is an autoimmune disease. Stress makes it worse, heat, spicy foods make it worse.

I say to anybody who has eye problems, if you are not getting the answers you need, keep going till you find a Dr. who knows.

This is why I'm not all that surprised to hear about the cataract complications. I was also told if I had gotten lasik surgery, I would have had major problems.

I will definitely send up prayers for you.

Thank you all so much!!! Humor very much appreciated Rusty... it help to calm the nerves.

The important lesson is to take care of your eyes and don't minimize any problems or avoid going to the doctor to check them out. With my first detachment, I was oing to wait, but my wife insisted I get checked. I expected to hear I needed eye drops, but instead was told to go home, pack a bag and don't eat. I had emergency surgery that night. If I waited much longer, my vision would have been gone.
