Still alive and kicking, Texans (trying) to head west
Greg Webb sports@weatherforddemocrat.com
WEATHERFORD

Connor Mackenzie, who will enter her freshman year at Weatherford in the fall, already makes a pretty long trip to practice and play soccer this summer. She and her Dallas Texans teammates are now trying to make a much longer trek to play in a very important match or two or whatever it takes.
Just a week ago, the state champion 15U girls select team thought their season was over, having finished second in the regional tournament in North Carolina. The 1-0 loss was a particularly poignant one, as the Texans had three players fall to injury during the match.
Sadness turned to elation for Mackenzie and her teammates when the Region II champs bowed out of the competition, handing the national title gauntlet over to the Texas team. But the first challenge the Texans face is catching a ride to Sacramento.
In a flurry of fund-raising activities, the girls are trying to raise money, in between staying tuned up for the national competition.
Connor, the youngest Texan who will turn 15 in less than a week, makes soccer just one of her athletic pursuits. The incoming freshman has already compiled a laundry list of middle school accomplishments. She played on the basketball A-teams in both her seventh and eighth grade tenures. And, certainly a requirement on the pitch, she also likes to run.
Winning the 200-meter dash in seventh-grade district competition in track, Mackenzie took second at 400 meters in her eighth-grade year, while helping the mile relay team win district gold.
Connor has her eyes, and feet, set on next playing soccer for the Lady Roos, and the sooner on the varsity squad, the better.
But for now, her Texan eyes are looking toward the California state capital, and the biggest cup the president offers.
For information about the Texans fund-raising activities, the team manager has enabled a website at http://dtrn97girls.org.
Weatherford freshman Connor MacKenzie and her Dallas Texans Red North 97G teammates hope to make the best of a second-chance opportunity, as they prepare to compete in the President's Cup National Finals Tournament in Sacramento, Calif. later this month. The 15U Girls U.S. Youth Soccer League team is trying to raise funds on short notice to join three other finalists at the national competition. COURTESY PHOTO

Cool stuff Doug! Congrats to your daughter and her teammates. May they make the most of the opportunity!

To get them fired up, make sure you play some AFE at the appropriate volume!

That is awesome! Win or lose, it is an incredible accomplishment to get to that level. You must be very proud.

Good luck Connor!

Awesome news Doug.....

Now if some of their competitive edge would rub off on another Texas team.....

Maybe they woke up and found pony heads at the bottom of their bed?
