I propose that we have an "Easter Resurrection" for all those who have been Playpenned or banned during the last year. The resurrected ones would have up to one week to show that they can redeem themselves in the somewhat normal world of the Whipping Post. Those that can't, or won't behave, go back to their previous status of being banned or playpenned.

I know that this is kinda late for Easter Sunday to happen, but it might be something the admins can work out
on doing during the week, or maybe a week later.

So, what are your comments on this proposal?

a sociological experiment involving grown men banished to a certain area of a website and then having them reinstated to the general population to see if they have "risen above" their transgressions and will in fact change their behavior, even though some of them are in their 40's, 50's and 60's.

I'm all for it.

The only problem is that this sociological experiment has been performed before right here, over and over again. Most folks who landed permanently in the playpen or banned had multiple warnings and even multiple trips to the playpen before being banished. In some cases behavior changed, but only temporarily. Why would one expect it to be different this time? You know what they say about people who do the same thing over and over again expecting different results.

However, it is a warm-hearted proposal and in keeping with the spirit of this most holy time. In the same spirit I offer this alternate proposal, which doesn't even need admin approval :

Many of us know good people who no longer visit this site because it got so ugly when the trolls were running rampant. Each of us could reach out let one of these folks know that the forums have returned to being a fun and interesting place to hang, with often lively and heated debates, mostly conducted in a civil manner. We could make a concerted effort to encourage them to come back. It would be great if we could get some of those who left out of frustration to return.

Have a great Easter!

Well, DOOM rises with each new computer I build, but I digress-----

Actually, I think it would be a good idea. The more I think about it, the more effort I see going into it.

The plan would kinda have to follow these guidelines:
The banned/playpenned posters would have to be contacted to let them know about the "resurrection". Those that used a fake e-mail to register would therefore be exempt since you can't reach them.
There would have to be a statement of intent from the admins about proper behavior (what is/is not acceptable).
A link in the e-mail would enable the ones who agree to the terms to let the admins know that they understand the consequences of not following the rules, including immediate banning. If they don't click the
link, they don't get "resurrected".
So, using those two tools, about 50% of those banned will not be coming back, or for not very long.

The key thing is to offer it to everyone who has been banned or playpenned since, let's say since the admins came on board. If not, it wouldn't be a fair deal.
Remember that the "resurrection" would only be for a week. Those who felt access to the site is worth them playing by the rules, let them put their case after that week to the admins for a full reinstatement of membership.
Remember, this place is supposed to be an extended family, crazy uncles and all.

Jerry, I appreciate your idea since everyone deserves a second chance (well, almost everyone!). If greater activity on the site is what you seek, Bob's idea of recruiting the self-banned has a greater liklihood of success (because it requires no Admin action, which I doubt you'd get, and the pool of candidates is bigger).

It's unlikely to change things much though; many have joined Facebook and seem to prefer it. I don't get it, but I don't have to.

Hope this helps .

I was being sarcastic.

No one has been pp'ed for quite a while. people realized the admins were serious and have conformed to forum rules, which either is their nature or willingness to do so. Some never could and never will...
