Back in 1970 I read a quote in either Melody Maker or New Musical Express (NME), a couple of British music magazines. I know it wasn't in Rolling Stone because I subscribed to it, and I clearly remember reading the piece in the Minneapolis Public Library.

There was an interview with Eric Clapton in which the interviewer asked somewhere what he thought of other guitarists (at least, I think that was the context. It's been a while....). Eric said, "This Duane Allman fellow scares the pants off me!". Also, IIRC, when they finally did meet, each said jokingly to the other, "I'm scared of you, man!" Remember--at that time, there were two well-known guitarists, Eric and Jimi. There were others, but none had the clout they did. And here was this American upstart rising fast.

I don't remember when the interview appeared, but I know it was done before they met, which was August, 1970 (?). And I can't verify with a citation. Grrrr!

I'm glad he got over his Duane-o-phobia and was able to churn out some of the most outrageous music of his career.

Probably in the same magazine article that qouted BBKing as saying Peter Green was the only guitar player who made him sweat

Here's a quote from 1970, NME and Eric that I
came across the other day....I'm sure that it's
probably common knowledge to the intelligentsia.

`I was hoping Duane Allman would come up
and do the (Johnny) Cash show with me.
We're doing a couple of songs Duane did with
me on the album, and with him playing lead
I would have more chance to get into my
singing'.

Wasnt' Duane recuperating in the hospital from his near-fatal overdose of opium at the time of the Johnny Cash show appearance by D&D? Seems like I read that here somewhere. But how sweet would that have been? Film of D&D with Duane.....

56Strat, yes, the old "=Layla= sessions" threads got into this a little bit. For Duane's overdose see especially the posts for 1970.10.28 Wednesday, 1970.10.29 Thursday, 1970.10.30 Friday, 1970.10.31 Saturday, and 1970.11.01 Sunday. Also skip ahead to my 11.20 post headed "The Mysterious Return to Criteria: The Problem with Early October," for more date comparisons between the ABB and D&D.

For D&D's appearance on the Johnny Cash show, see 1970.11.05 Thursday in this different thread:

Although it has never been posted here, there is a quote by Bobby Whitlock in tom Nolans book.
quote:
"Erics good in his own right man, but this southern boy come in serious about playing.

Sorry about the delay, but I just found this link to a piece in The Great Speckled Bird, Volume 7, issue 29,July 22, 1974, that also quotes Eric's comment:

Thanks! It took me only 14 years, 360 days to answer my own post. Is this a record?

Fellow Duaniac !
You betcha! I saw him 3 times in 1971 and I still get goose bumps sometimes recalling the shows. I was in the thirteenth row Sept. 30, 1971 at the Minneapolis Auditorium. The scheduled opening act didn't appear so we got two shows for the price of one. My ears rang for two days. Bliss!
