The ABB book is fantastic Alan. I keep my copy next to my favorite chair so I can get it when I want to check something. SRV book is real fine too.

Yes Gregg has always told the story about a bass player Duane didnt care for driving him from LA right to the door in Jacksonville. But some of the roadies back in 1970 when the fans were hearing the stories about how the band formed, claimed that for some reason Gregg thinks he rode across the country with a bass player, he actually flew.

I was born in 1946, so perhaps it was my youth and the good herb that could be found, but to me the original lineup WAS the REAL Allman Brothers. As good as some of the later lineups would be on a hot night, there was an energy and vibe that came from Duane and from the other five to a good degree that disappeared with Duane Allman.

Some newer fans who are really into Derek and Warren have indicated to me that Derek and Warren took what Duane and Dickey created to a higher level. But maybe I'm old now or something but I don't hear it.

To me the band that is playing on Fillmore East and Eat A Peach is how the ABB sounds and as good as that sound ever got. I have yet to hear anything from the last lineup or any lineup of the ABB that tops the original band. I mean what in the hell could Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks do that would top what Dickey and Duane play on One Way Out on Eat A Peach or Liz Reed on Fillmore East?

And originial material? What about that. Soulshine has become an ABB standard but other than that, what did they write that is on par with Whipping Post, Midnight Rider, Dreams, Midnight Rider, Jessica, Blue Sky, Elizabeth Reed etc, etc. Even Gregg and Dickey didnt come up with much in the 1990's. Seven Turns, Good Clean Fun, True Gravity, No One Left To Run With are real good songs though.

The Chuck/Lamar lineup, The Warren/Allen Woody lineup, Jack Pearson/Otiel lineup had some very strong shows and I saw some very strong shows, especially in the mid 2000s from the last lineup and the MSQ show was real strong and featured incredible playing from all on stage including Reese and Duane Trucks...but there was a vibe and energy and drive we all who was grabbed inside by the original band that left the stage after Duane and Berry left.

It's that way to a degree with me when I've seen Skynyrd after Ronnie died. It was good and fun but just not as exciting and special as it was when Ronnie Van Zant was leading that band.

My apologies to the great fans of Derek and Warren here. I think they are great too. I always see them when they are in the general area of my hometown. I'm just totally hooked on a vibe, sound and band that I only got to see about 15 times in 1970 and 71. Maybe my problem is it didnt last long enough for me to get my fix. I apologise to those who think I'm dissing their favorite version of the ABB. I mean no criticism of any of the very, very good musicians who have played in the ABB over the years.

For what it's worth, the herb that is out there in the 2000s is much more potent than what you could get in 1970. Maybe that's the difference!

Could be Jim. But judging from what ALL the list of characters had to say in that excerpt from Alan's book, it was Duane Allman.

There are those unique people who leave such a void when they pass that it's never the same.

Actually the entire band were at their creative peak from 1969 to about 1974 or 75.

The Blue Skies, Midnight Riders, Melissas, Jessica, Liz Reed, Dreams songs were in the 1969 to 1975 time frame.

Their post 1975 albums had some fine songs on them but not a Whipping Post or Revival. High Falls, Crazy Love, Good Clean Fun, Seven Turns, True Gravity, Kinda Bird, Nobody Left To Run With, Back Where It Begins, Soulshine, Desdemona, Firing Line, Bag End etc are good songs. But don't you agree the real gems came from 69 to about 74?

I didn't understand this as a young fan, but it's incredible that a group of guys who were all between 20 and 25 created something that lasted for 45 years. And it's not like they knew they were doing that at the time. They did what they wanted to do and it resonated and kept going in spite of a staggering amount of difficulty and tragedy, and it gave so much to so many.
