UConn cancels their college football season. The first domino...

I don't know what the future holds but I in no way think UConn is any indication of it. They are independent with no conference affiliation they are left out to dry. As P5 leagues went conference only in their schedules, or cut 4 non-con games to 1-2, independent teams are left scrambling to fill canceled games. UConn lost 4games and could lose 2 more.

I know they said it was safety, but without their payday games, the truth of the matter is their season becomes a money loser. That, had as much to do with their decision as anything else.

Just because they have a good reason to be the first to throw in the towel doesn't mean there won't be a second. If one or two schools in a conference bails, I find it hard to imagine the rest of the conference won't follow. Hopefully in a month things will be different, colleges just have a lot stacked against them.

Dang, former Packer Tootie Robbins passes from corona virus at 62.

If it had been a group of 5 or a power 5 conference team canceling their college football season, that to me would be something. UConn doing it...I know the coach came out after people I guess were saying things like I said and if they were in a league or they didn't lose games off their schedule that they'd be still planning on playing - so the minute somebody accuses you of doing it because of the money, it is a bad look so you are going to come out and try to counter that.

I acknowledge that there are many hurdles and pitfalls and questions and concerns about all these sports and players and coaches and administrators and so on, UConn included.

But when you look at it in the risk vs reward equation, for UConn there was absolutely no reward. They have no conference revenue share. They have no TV contract. And they lose almost half the games off their schedule because the P5 leagues said they are going conference only, or a couple leagues are playing 1 non-league game - would UConn be that one they keep? I mean, so UConn loses all the games that were going to get them their big pay checks, and there is absolutely no financial reward. UConn football doesn't pay the bills at that school anyhow.

Now, if you had say Virginia come out and say they are canceling their season when UVA does benefit from their conference revenue and the big TV contracts and the bowl and playoff money, if they were going to forgo all of that for safety...now that would be a story.

Maybe more FBS/IA schools will do this. Maybe they won't. The independents like UMass and Liberty and New Mexico State would be the ones. Army, BYU and ND do have TV deals and make money on their own without depending on the other revenue streams. You can call UConn a domino, just don't call them any kind of barometer or predictor on what is going to happen because there are something like 130 FBS/DIA schools and only about 5 of them have similar circumstances to what UConn has.

nebish, I think we are both just saying there's no surprise that UConn made the decision now, and the next month is a big "maybe".

We are, just maybe for different reasons. I'll get a college football 2020 thread going. There's been lots of news this week for those of us interested.
