Thought we could use some elbow room on this.

If you are quick to lash out at "the left" for "PC" banning of lyrics and books - (i am assuning "PC" as a criticism of "the left" as I have never seen it used elsewise), keep in mind the overwhelming majority of banning has historically come from the right.

Is it "PC at its finest" when conservatives ban books? The left is guilty too but has tried to ban way less, most notably Huckleberry Finn, a real crime as that book pretty much invented modern colorblind tolerance.

Can this same "Historic" defense also be used when describing the Democratic party of the past?
You know, the one which defended Slavery and was responsible for the birth of the KKK? Or are we just keeping this discussion in the now?

As in what is happening today?

Whatever!!!! Cut me a break with the civil war. LOL. It's Strawman, the new Marvel Comics superhero, able to deflect any argument into oblivion with a gust of hot gas from the bowels.

Was simply wondering if you think "PC" only applies to liberals. Is it "PC" when The First Self Righteous Church of Bluehair County bans Harry Potter as satanic witchcraft, or Charlotte's Web as blasphemous (talking animals)? These chsllenges happen constantly, way more from conservatives. It wasn't liberals making bonfires of Beatles records.

Fair enough. It was the use of the phrase “historically” that caught my eye....

But to address your point with a question, “How long has ‘Baby its cold outside been part of Christmas tradition? And why all of a sudden? The examples you bring up were “current “ at that time. This song has been around what? 70 years?

All this talk of Charlie Brown, Rudolph, and Baby It's Cold Out Side is just rediculous. I don't know a single liberal that is in favor of baning these things or find them troubling. Basically, you have a very, very small group of people who notice one small thing and jump all over it, and then it gets attributed to the entire "left."

I'm sure back in the day when the religious right were trying to have "Imagine" banned it wasn't the majority of the right, but it was a more sizable group than we have now. The big difference now is that social media now blows everything up.

It's not unlike the right trying to "ban" peaceful protests during the national anthem during a football game, but again that is a much, much larger group than the small group who want "Baby It's Cold Outside" taken off the radio.

As far as talking about the Democrats and the KKK 150 years ago, exactly how long do we have to wait until that becomes a non-issue? Seems like the US have gotten past the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor and the Nazis in Germany. In fact, Trump's best friend is now the Russian president, with The Cold War a distant memory, yet you want to bring up the Democrats support of the KKK after the Civil War? Well, not really - it's just a weak attempt at distraction from the current sizable percentage of racists in the Republican party.

We are in solid agreement strongly against banning songs and books. The xmas song in question is indeed a silly target - the lyrics are pretty innocent. Not sure how your "current" point applies. There are constant retroactive banning attacks on classics, again the vast majority from conservatives. On the Origin of Species(1859) is under perennial attack from the Christian Right to this day.

The liberal left is guilty too for sure. A quick scan of banned materials shows a clear majority of conservative repression.

Once again, fair enough and we are in agreement on this issue, it's just too much. Too many people on both sides of any topic who are too easily offended and edemand that to be the catalyst for "change"

They are the same. If both sides of the banning crowd got their way we would have zero songs, books, or art. So to me they have their desire for mind control and repression in common, which puts them on the same side, clearly in opposition to free exchange of ideas.

Re that dem/repub civil war thing - Weren't the Dems the conservatives in those days? I think I would have voted for Lincoln.

When I was young the PRMC was a big deal. Tipper Gore was enemy #1. I was listening to the Dead Kennedys and Ice T and both were under fire from people who wanted to restrict or eliminate their platform. I hated the PMRC, I hated Tipper Gore. I hated anything that was trying to get in the way of me being able to purchase and listen to the music of my choice.

I remember 2 Live Crew's 'As Nasty As They Want to Be' and literally, if that had not been banned it wouldn't have been so sought after. If they would've just left it alone a small number of people would've bought it, instead, by banning it they draw attention to it and now everyone has to have it (and 2 Live Crew can thank censorship for their fame).

I do not think that anything should be banned because it offends someone. If that someone is a minority opinion and the majority is not offended then the minority shouldn't have any say in determining the availability of whatever it is we are talking about, songs, book, movies, art, etc.

If there is some real threat to society, some real danger in the medium we are considering banning then perhaps it deserves consideration - like trying to convert people to violent extremists or something. But if something is offensive to a select group, I say deal with it. I mean we still have rap artists constantly using the N word in their songs and the only time that apparently is offensive is when a white person says it. Or some Jewish joke. Or whatever it is.

I say get over being offended and move on to enjoying one of the many other things in life that don't offend you and leave everyone else alone with whatever they might like.

Like the whole Piss Christ controversy. Just take it or leave it. Who cares. It shouldn't be anyone's role to get that banned and restricted. Just go about your life and let others go about theirs. We all like different things and different things interest or stimulate all of us. If you don't like something, don't ruin it for the ones that do.

So Kevin Hart is under fire now. I have an older step-son, but when he was younger and wanted to play with dolls I'd be like "hey man, what's up with the dolls, that is gay, here is a toy truck instead". I have a gay niece, they use the word gay to describe things that are lame whatever. But if a straight person uses the word 'gay' that is bad. If somebody wants to be gay that is their thing. If a parent doesn't want, or isn't exactly excited about their kid doing gay stuff, that is their thing.

Everyone has to figure out their own **** and stop worrying about other people's **** . Doesn't mean what is right for me must be right for you and what is right for you doesn't have to be right for me. Hey, if you are gay and loving life that is great, and if you want to raise your kids gay that is great. Just don't tell me what I should be doing and I won't tell you what you should be doing.

Widening from the banned books and songs subject, but it all kind of ties into today's PC culture and tolerance or lack there off and wanting to silence views that differ from the mainstream or just different from your's.

There are fools among all political parties. Can we please condemn the fool without bringing politics into it? To direct your ire at the party only creates a disservice to yourself and others. The rational conservatives and rational liberals should come together and condemn the irrational conservatives and irrational liberals. Now that’s a party that I would join. Anyone worrying about lyrics, wedding cakes, kneeling, or Kevin Hart’s tweets from 9 years ago, is not welcome.

If he is being characterized as someone who just wants to blow things up, that is offensive and derogatory. If he s just making remarks about political affairs or a current news item it might not be so bad.

I'm against any banning at all, no matter how derogatory or offensive something is. I don't believe, however, that radio stations, newspapers, or Internet hosts should be required to carry content that they are uncomfortable with. Personally I find Infowars to be highly offensive and even dangerous in spreading conspiracy theories to the gullible, but that is the price of living in a free society.

I agree . Question, is any media reqired to carry content they aren't comfortable with? I never heard of any rule on that.

So Kevin Hart is under fire now.

I like Kevin Hart because he is a Comedian. "Good" comics make fun of everything, it's the Nature of the Business. I respect Kevin because he does just that and as a result, he makes me laugh. I would have had a lot more respect for Mr. Hart had he stood up and told everyone to "Just relax, it's comedy. If you don't appreciate it, maybe my show is not for you"...

Maybe next time.

If the "cold" song has to go then country radio doesn't have a chance. My local library still don't have Catcher In The Rye.

Funny, I just saw that Kathy Griffin was on Steven Colbert last week. I had almost forgotten about the firestorm around her. Or around the Dixie Chicks.

I do have some conservative pals who have been losing their minds over the "Baby It's Cold Outside" banning - mind you, they are the same guys who wet their pants because some football players knelt during the National Anthem that plenty of stadium attendees still use as an excuse to go buy beer.
