I'd seen Dickey solo tour Highway Call, only player in the Allmans summer tour 74 and theWin , Lose or Draw tour.( witnessed the famed Dickey drum solo at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri, WIN, LOSE or DRAW tour and I might happen to have a photo of it somewhere stored in Kansas City), as the only player in the Allmans, with Dan, Warren and Derek. Also saw the Dickey Betts Band open for Gregg one night just before the I'm No Angel album was released...Dickey joined Greggs band on stage...far effn out...I knew the ABB had to make a charge at it again after seeing that.
Unfortunatley never saw him with Duane and missed opportunities to see him with Jimmy Herring ( bad mo fo) and Jack.
The Seven Turns and Shades of Two Worlds tour these guys ( Warren and Dickey) just tore it up and blew the stars out of the summer night sky. Years of hope had finally materialized, seeing a 2 guitar ABB again that really smoked.
My favorite Dickey studio tone has gotta be on Southbound,,,,good luck trying to duplicate that tone, if any has, shine the light on me please. Live captured is Fillmore East. Dickey's solos on that album are all top notch.
When Dickey has all 4 fingers on his left hand going, its pretty sweet stuff.

I enjoyed every show I saw when Dickey and Warren were together.

I Agree. I have a sweet spot for the 90's. I cant seem to get enough of it. Dickey is my favorite guitarist of the ABB, and of course Duane is too, but as a guitar player i spend so such time trying to get Dickey's style down. Especially the way he played in the early 90's and that tone he had with goldie just beats the hell out of anything else.

Hands down, Duane was the man. I think Dickey just stopped growing as a guitar player. Being a fan of the Allmans since I can't remember when, The later shows with Dickey (80's & 90's) featured a very predictable sound, to me almost all of Dickey's playing began to sound like "Ramblin' Man"... Just my .02 cents worth.

Im not only a huge Dead fan,im also a big fan of The Allman Brothers..I just wonder what guitarist you folks think is the best in the Allman Brothers trough the years..I know most folks think Duane is far the best..I think Duane was one of the best white blues players of all time..And his slide playing was very unique and mind blowing..But i think Mr Richard Betts was far the best guitar player in the history of ABB..His techniuqe and the way he could play country, jazz, rock and blues etc..Duane was ofcourse a much better slide plaayer and Derek and Warren too..But straight lead guitar is think Dickey was way better than all the other guitar players in this band..Listen to Ramblin man or Jessica from the Brothers on the road dvd..Or his playing in 71 or in the early 90ties..so amazing good..anyone who agree with me??

LOL,,,

vote me in......

There wouldn't be this discussion if it wasn't for Duane. He opened the door for all of the others that have walked through. He is the genius behind the band with a spirit so strong that we have all gathered here to celebrate

My 12yo (guitar playing) son asks me frequently, who do you think the best guitar player in the world is? My answer to him is no one, each picker is different emotionally, technically and sound wise. Its like asking whats the best car, beer, scoot, football team.Duane & Dickey,Dan,Derek &Warren are all great guitarists one things for sure, if there werent a Duane & Dickey there wouldnt be a Dan,Derek &Warren.I love Duanes playing, slide & standard i equally love Dickeys playing, man i just love playing Jessica real loud that solo still to this day gives me goose bumps. As Eric Clapton once said "the best guitar player in the world, theres one in every crowd.

No direspect toward the original line-up, but the Woody-Warren-Betts team was the one that really did it for me, and while short-lived, I thought the Betts -Trucks tandem was outstanding - a couple of the '99 shows with those two still make me shake my head in wonder. As for Dickey, as I've typed a lot of times - he's a bona-fide, certified, bad-ass American musical icon. I'll continue to go see that little sawed-off cracker's band for as long as he's still doin' it - even if he's playing 3 Blind Mice on a kazoo. ROCK ON DB.

Ok, bringing this back to reality, Wharfie...clean your ears out bro.
It is not that Derek, or any of the others are not great, it is the very intimate sound and
nuances that Duane and Dickey brought to the band. They were, and still are, the defining sound, tone, and riff of the ABB. No one could take the band to places like Duane and Dickey, as Reddog said, it's magic when the orig. lineup played. Even the five
piece band later. Further, The accomplishments of what Duane and Dickey did with the ABB, but beyond. The studio work with various artists, the ability to metamorph to the artist/song and take it to a higher place....that is the shortcomings of the others. All great
in their own right, but not over the top IMHO. Duane and Dickey set the bar and it has not been reached as of today. Maybe never.
Regards to all,
spdb

90 something replies in 2 days... Dickey will always be part of this band.

How old was Duane when he died? 27ish? Technically, I don't understand how someone his age can be better than Warren in his 40s or when Dickey was in his 40s.

Please, please forgive me for what I'm about to ask...
Could it be that because Duane died at an early age that his guitar legend stature is so high?

Put the gun down, clean your monitor off since you just spit out your drink all over it!!!

Ok, clean screen now I can see. Are you shi#%$##injg me?? What does age have to do with anything? I'm over 50 and been playing for over 30 years and I can't touch Duane or Dickey. To answer the question, NO, and again, NO! uane is held in high esteem by the quality, integrity, talent, innovation, creativity, emotion, and just plain
damn kick your ass guitar talent. Many copy, none match. Warren and Derek and Joe Blow can play for the next 50 years and not touch what Duane and Dickey accomplished
or attain the level they played.
Ok, that ought to get an erection of attitude out of some here..........so?

I've listened to him many many times. He's just never really gotten to me. So Duane at 27 iwas more progressed as a guitarist than Warren/Dickey in his 40s?
