Thread: George H W Bush 1924 - 2018

With the last 4 decades of two term Presidents, I've often felt like history overlooks the importance, strength and character of this man, not just his 4 years in the White House, but a life time of service and dedication to the country. He may've been the best of all of them.

Agreed. I remember when a chat with a WW2 veteran was easy to find.

I wonder what his take on the current political situation was.

God rest his soul. Regardless of your political leaning, he was a great man.

Aside from various negative remarks about DJT & his anger at how disrespectfully DJT treated Jeb Bush during the primaries, the most telling take is that GHW Bush voted for Hillary Clinton and said so publicly.

That was good, thanks for posting.

He was uncomfortable being called a war hero because he knows about the other heroes who didn't live and he knows about all the others that don't get recognition they deserve.

About 7 years ago I read "Flyboys" in which this encounter is detailed. The story differs a bit in the book stating (from memory) that G.W. was floating in the raft and could see the Japanese were aware of his presence offshore and were bringing guns to the beach to commence firing at his raft as it crept towards shore with the tide.....then, almost as if out of a Hollywood script, a U.S.S. Submarine surfaced and he was pulled aboard...

Here is the actual footage of he being rescued shot by a seaman with an 8mm camera from the deck of the U.S.S Finback
https://youtu.be/N8ZYv2TFnZg

I highly recommend to anyone here who is interested; read "Flyboys" by James Bradley

While I certainly didn't agree with all his politics, I absolutely respected him and appreciated his service to this country both in and out of politics. RIP, GHWB...

At today's service, George W Bush's eulogy was moving, Alan Simpson's filled with laughter. But I think HW's friend and former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney summed things up best:

quote:
Many men of differing talents and skills have served as president, and many more will do so as the decades unfold, bringing new strength and glory to these United States of America. And 50 or 100 years from now, as historians review the accomplishments and the context of all who have served as president, I believe it will be said that in the life of this country, the United States, which is, in my judgment, the greatest democratic republic that God has ever placed on the face of this earth, I believe it will be said that no occupant of the Oval Office was more courageous, more principled, and more honorable than George Herbert Walker Bush.

All five living presidents were on hand, and I was amazed at how well Jimmy Carter looked, considering his cancer issues from earlier this year
President Bush did so much for America
