Thread: Why don't we see Derek and Duane Trucks playing together more?

WaitinForRain - 3/24/2020 at 12:14 AM

Seems kinda odd when they like the same stuff
and hang in the jam band scene.

Anyone?

Derek is TTB
Duane is Widespread Panic

Not being in the same band could be the answer.

I try to read everything that comes available on Derek, Warren and anyone who has been involved with the ABB, and don't recall Derek say much about his brother. But for the BROTHERS concert, Duane Trucks was certainly tapped as the one to sit in Butch Trucks' chair.

Maybe Derek and Duane should put together a new band. Call it TRUCKS. The last name of the lead guitar player and the drummer. Neither apparently don't sing lead vocals so they would need a singer...but hey it worked for Van Halen....the last name of the lead guitarist and the drummer but a lead singer has to be hired.

"Derek is TTB
Duane is Widespread Panic"

#obvious

Kofi n Oteil: one heartbeat
Rich n Chris: Hatfields n McCoys
Duane and Derek: Zzzzzzzz

On the final dTb tour a decade ago, Duane played with the band on a second smaller kit in the back.

May 2017 at the Col Bruce Tribute show, I got to see them play together.

Derek didn't play Wanee or Peachfest after 2014, which took away some opportunities to play together....Duane was at most of those (2017 Peachfest Saturday set had 6 ABB alumni on stage together with Duane, but Derek wasn't a part of it).

Kind of surprised he doesn't sit in with the TTB in Atlanta (maybe WSP is out on the road).

It's none of my business and I don't really care anyway, but getting along with a sibling isn't the same as being close. I don't know their age difference, but Derek was on the road fairly heavily by around age 12 and was making the weekend rounds earlier than that. Perhaps they just grew up separately (or separated) quite a bit.

I always got the feeling reading Oteil interviews that he and Kofi were at the hip musically, just as a comparison. Perhaps Brothers Trucks just weren't around each other as much as most siblings in the formative years.

I could be way off base, and I have never followed them as siblings all that much, but just a thought.

Derek is 9.5 years older than Duane.

They both have their own bands and families and schedules and things and want to make their own music. There might not be a lot of urgency to play together. Kofi and Oteil have been mentioned here, but in between their mutual stints in ARU in the 1990s and TTB in the 2010s, they went long stretches without playing together all that much, at least in public. People might think about this differently in the future, but with family, it seems like there's always time to do it later.

Speaking of the Burbridges, if you haven't heard this show, you should: https://archive.org/details/YSB2011-03-12.YSB2011-03-12.aud.flac16 It's Yonrico Scott and friends with Oteil, Kofi, and Kebbi Williams. I was there and forgot about it for years, but after Rico and Kofi were both gone I remember it and was lucky enough to find that ABSNJ had recorded it and put it online.

They did tour together with the Soul Stew Revival band.

Are you saying that artists in one band don't sit in with another band? Brothers or not, it happens all the time. Especially if schedules allow. Heck, how many people have sat in with the ABB over the years?

Given his connection as Dickey's Son in law, I was always surprised that we never saw Tesla's Frank Hannon sit in with the ABB.

Wow, didn't know the connection! I love Tesla but that would definitely be interesting to see Hannon playing with The ABB.

Glad you brought that up. I have thought that for quite awhile.

Good question. They had a good connection it seems from the videos I saw of the 50th anniversary and to be honest Jaimoe at his age and shape just doesn't have it play a full show like that anymore. Duane really filled in great as replacing Butch would be no easy task. Maybe one day the Trucks brothers will record a album together.

AlPaul - 3/27/2020 at 03:25 AM

I think they should play together more and I told them both that after the show. It was so dynamic.
