Great Scott,
I remember that song, The Lumberjack, 1992. It was a band called Jackyl. I remember the singer wielding a chainsaw on stage. At least for the MTV video. They were from Georgia. They opened for Aerosmith for thier 1993 tour.(I think)
GreatScott, I believe you are talking about the Lumberjack Song by that cheezy early '90s band called Jackyl. Pretty much the only other thing they are known for is the naked schlong that lead singer Jesse James Dupree sports in concert. And that actually is a chainsaw you are hearing in the song.
Thanks to everyone who posted reviews today!!!! Next best thing to being there.
Say, while I'm thinking about it, one of y'all musical historians help me out with this one if you would. There is a song, I think it is called "(I'll Be Your) Chainsaw, Baby." Or perhaps it is "(I'm A) Chainsaw, Baby." Something like that. I've heard it a few times over the years, but never heard who it is by.
It is kind of a medium tempo blues riff, only with a crunching, borderline metal sounding guitar. At one point, the lead guitarist actually makes sounds on his instrument approximating a chainsaw. And the singer comes off like a cross between Bon Scott and Jim Dandy Mangrum. But I don't think it is AC/DC or Black Oak Arkansas.
Anyone, anyone?

I guess he's no Warren Haynes. 😉
Although I do wish him a speedy recovery, for the sake of his own fans anyway.
Heard on the radio today that Zakk Wylde is having to cancel the last remaining dates on Ozzy's European tour due to mental and physical exhaustion. He's been doing double duty, opening for Ozzy with his own band at each show.
Jimmy - The Rosen Brewery is 4 blocks norht of the theater on Western. If you are facing the front doors of the theater go left up Western. It is on the same side of the street as the Wiltern.
Woody, I actually heard through the peachvine (do peaches have vines? ) that the Allmans and Barry had worked up a tasty version of "Can't Smile Without You." 😉
"...I can't laugh, and I can't sing, I'm findin' it hard to do anything..."
Call it a hunch, but I think the band will have a surprise or two up its collective sleeve before these La La Land shows are over. I'm thinkin' Saturday especially will be one y'all will be talking about for years to come. Again, just call it a hunch.
Sounds like a marvelous time is being had by all. Keep up the good work, boys, and keep the fab reviews coming as California tumbles into the sea.
Everybody else, have a good weekend. 😀
.
It's all coming back to me now!
Funny moment last night: some hottie gets up on stage right between Warren and Derek and starts dancing during Rocking Horse. Warren and Derek both look at each other with these huge grins. Dino looks over at me and says right on cue with the music, "there's the guardian angel". Too classic.
Needless to say, security converged and before they could get to her, the crowd helped her off of the stage and back to the pit where she continued her dance. No harm-no foul.
To answer a couple of questions quickly, the album is all recorded and is due out before the Beacon next year. Heart of Stone is on it.
Also, Gregg no longer comes out to play the acoustic guitar on Midnight Rider, he stays behind the organ like he did in the early days, and Melissa has only been played once since Warren re-joined the band last March. So if there's really an acoustic amp, I'm not sure why it's there.
I think at one point last nite, I whispered to Brent that our 'lil Derek is all grow'd up ....
Hello GBers....
Just a quick note for you fellow NYC folk:
Over here in sunny downtown Brooklyn, every Thursday this summer they have a free 2hr (noon to 2pm) concert in the park. Yesterday was Maceo Parker (boy, can he jam). The FYI is... June 20th - North Mississippi All-Stars, July 25th - Wilson Pickett
Thats a hell of a way to spend lunchtime if ya ask me!
I can't wait until the Bros. get back to their home turf in sweet sunny South. I wonder how much they'll be mixing up the set list this tour. From what I've heard, I think Desdemona is the best of the new batch. Any word on the status of the new one, I know it's due in the spring, but are they done in the studio?
I think the below-referenced amp is Gregg's Midnight Rider/Melissa etc. acoustic amp.
Life is good. The ABB summer is upon us. It is 72 degrees & Sunny today in Michigan. The Red Wings kicked the Can, er Canes last night. To top it all off Terri sends me 3 tix for 6/22 Chicago Theater. Terri, you're an Angel.
Peach to everybody on the GB. Y'all have a great weekend.
Hey kids got some house seats for tonight in LA..how far is the that rosen brewery from the gig and what time does the show start...i'd like to watch a little of the net game.
peace,
jimmy
Bringing an ALLMAN virgin to the show...says he loves jam bands..but has never seen the ABB...what an education he will get...
Boy you lefties sure sound like you had a great night last night. Woody got his tunes and tonight 007 will climb the Mountain. Either that or they're going to kill him with a WP/MJ close Saturday night. It's all good 007.Sounds like the Bros are getting a great warm up for Chicago! I've been talking with Big Windy and it seems like there's things to do in Chicago other than going to the ABB. Larry McCray and John Mayall will be playing at Buddy Guy's Legends (different nights) and they have a lake and everything up there!!!! Plus three nights of the ABB at the Chicago Theeeeaaaaayyyyter!!!! Dayam!! That toddlin' town.....:D
:D:eek::cool::cool: Johnny :cool::cool::eek::D
Sneaking into the site for a couple of other thoughts. Desdemona is the hightlight of the new songs. I forgot another favorite of mine that kicked it, Black Hearted Woman, 2nd best version I've heard (still takes 2nd to 9-23-00) Was also hoping for Heart of Stone, is that on the new CD? I hope so. It was fun to see Scotty up there in the pit with his camera. looking quite official and VERY happy. Gotta have a mountain jam tonight. The drum solo was impressive, I was sitting there thinking that Butch is amazing. He is in his mid 50's and I can't even stand and dance through the whole show and he is cooking on those drums the entire time. I could't see jaimoe very well, but he seems to be more laid back. My hats off to Butch.
I am a hard core fan and I love every flavor of the band, but I've got to admit as much as I love every show, I'm missing Dickey more and more. Warren is great, but he has a more Jimmy Hendricks kind of approach and to my old ears has a harder edge than is the classic ABB style. He kicks a$$ for sure, but it has a different flow. I'll have another shot this evening!
Whipping Post / Mountain Jam!!!
Go Nets (got a better chance of having Barry Manilow sitting in with the brothers tonight)
Some other things-
Prior to the show we met at Rosen Brewery (400 S. Western corner of 4th & western). The place is really large and they have a 2 for 1 pitcher deal. Beer was great and they had soccer on. I talked to Mike the head there and we had him put on the canes game. Got a group shot of about 12 people and hopefully it will be up here later today. He has full on karaoke rooms that have seeting for over 20. Dare I suggest someone bring down some Allman music?
Going to meet Glenn and the BAABBA folks later.
Someone asked what Butch met by Florida and NY being open. Well it seems that FFR is selling stock or at least sending out prospectus to folks in NY & Florida. Butch told me to send him a ny or Florida address and he'll send a prospectus.
Briefly talked with Jamoe after the show man is that guy funny. Real kind spirit. noticed him leaving the kit a little last night. didn't get to ask him about his back but he seemed to be walking fine.
Peace love and still prayin for a mountain jam--Scotty
Now that I am among the living I just wanted to mention a few things that the boyz forgot.
First, no one mentioned that Marc Ford sat in last night. He was playing a les paul on one way out. standing in between Gregg and Derek.
Second, I noticed that Oteil was actually determining when some of the songs would end It appeared that Derek warren and the rest of the band were watching his head stock.
BTW- oteil seemed in great spirits. He personally laid out his carpet slipped out of his shoes and started dancing and playing.
Third- IMHO the second set sounded better. It think they turned up marc Q in the mix and it just really rounded out the sound.
Fourth- For the guitar heads-
Derek played his Washburn through 2 marshal w/ Randall speakers cabs.
Warren had a diaz head and a soldano head w/ two engle cabs.
Warren played the red 335 to start and then went with his tobacco les paul.
Oteil- had two ampeg bottoms and 1 4X10 cab.
oteil played quite a few basses sorry I can't name them
FOURTH- this might be my imagination but closer to Gregg and next to Derek’s setup is what appears to be an acoustic amp. Not sure but that's what it looks like. We'll have to wait and see on this one.
Fifth- the drums were cooking last night. There was a nice lengthy drum solo and at a point Butch played they tympanis (sp?) I was hoping it would go into mountain jam but I got DENIED.
There is always tonight
Peace Love and prayin’ for a mountain jam--Scotty
