Howdy out there in GB land. Was pawing around in Best Buy yesterday and picked up two gems. First Janis Joplin's Greatest, Man her singing is to vocals what Hendricks is to guitar playing, it's not perfect but just can't be duplicated. Next Stand UP by Tull. I love this album so much. An unbelievable combination of styles, and lead flute, who would of thunk it. On a more serious note, my big brother goes in for surgery for big C a week from today. Its lodged between spine and aorta, really bad stuff. Anyway no long winded responses are necessary, they make me cry too much and I need little help crying these days, however lots and lots of prayers, thoughts, and good vibes would be appreciated. Love your families like it's your last day on earth, cause, damnit, it might be.

Actually, Lee, when I was a youngster, we had family friends that were Michigan alums and always had game-watching parties when the Wolverines were on. So I guess I've always had somewhat of a soft spot for them, although they definitely stole the nickname "Big Blue" from Kentucky. :boomerang: I offered this fab show over on the Derek list, and I thought some of y'all might want it as well, it is a scorcher. A few good seats left on the B&P Express, with nonstop service to... ...The Derek Trucks Band with guest vocalist Susan Tedeschi 10/12/02 Birdy's Indianapolis, Indiana 7/4 Jam > Pleasant Garden Pedro Gonna Move Feel So Bad So Close, So Far Away Lead Not To Temptation Cheesecake Afro Blue Ain't That Lovin' You > Joyful Noise Encore: Rastaman Chant Josh and Leon, y'all's copy is on its way. 😀

I just heard on CNN where Bill Wyman of Stones fame had his attorney contact a music critic in Florida who, amazingly, is named Bill Wyman. Seems Bill (the Stone) thinks his name is like a trademark, and unauthorized use, well, that's a big deal. So they fee Bill the critic should, well, find some other damn name to parade around with. Now, here is the Twilight Zone part..... Bill the critic was given that name at birth. Bill the Stone was originally something else, William George Perks. Wow, Bill Wyman is so much more glamorous. OK. So, will the cease and desist hold up in court, haha.

Billy Eddins and other blues fans, A couple of years ago I saw Bryan lee put on a great show at the infamous blues club called the "Slippery Noodle" in INDY. That man plays some killer guitar. Peter Gabriel last Thursday played with his toys on stage and blew us away in Chicago. Thank you Peter.

Interview w/ Susan T. in today's Boston Globe: She's on a New Level But Still Local Steve Morse, Globe Staff 11/18/2002 The Boston Globe Susan Tedeschi, the pride of Norwell on the South Shore, shocked the nation two years ago by earning a Grammy nomination for best new artist. The other nominees - Britney Spears, Kid Rock, Macy Gray, and Christina Aguilera (who won) - were all on much bigger record labels. Everyone loves an underdog, so Tedeschi was showered with attention. Given that she'd recorded on the tiny Tone-Cool Records in Wellesley and played blues jams at Wally's in the South End and Johnny D's in Somerville, her Grammy nomination was viewed as a victory for the Boston scene in general. Much has happened since - a headlining tour, gigs with Bob Dylan and the Allman Brothers Band, a marriage to Allman Brothers guitarist Derek Trucks , a new home with him in Jacksonville, Fla., a new baby named Charlie, and concerts this fall singing with Grateful Dead offshoot the Other Ones, starting at the FleetCenter tonight. But Tedeschi, 32, hasn't forgotten her Boston roots. Her long- awaited follow-up CD, "Wait for Me," is due out tomorrow on Tone- Cool/Artemis Records and boasts a who's who of Boston musicians. The new single, "Alone," was recorded at Milt Reder's Rear Window Studios in Brookline (where Tedeschi also made "Just Won't Burn," the album that led to her Grammy nomination). It features local guitar hero Kevin Barry (a former classmate of Tedeschi's at Berklee College of Music), drummer Dave Mattacks, bassist Dean Cassell, organist Tom West, and a hot local horn section of Paul Ahlstrand and Gordon Beadle. "I got addicted to the blues in Boston, and I love these players," says Tedeschi. "I can't say enough about them." For the new album, her first in four years, Tedeschi expanded her horizons to also use studios in New York, St. Louis, Jacksonville, and Mill Valley, Calif. But there is still a pronounced Boston flavor, and she concludes the album with "Blues on a Holiday," a sparsely beautiful song by Cambridge legend Paul Rishell, who performs on it with his partner, Annie Raines. "He had originally written the song for Bonnie Raitt in the '70s," Tedeschi says. "And it was a different approach for me. It was a pretty song and not belt-y. It brought out another side of me." Tedeschi is known as a belter and has been compared endlessly to a young Bonnie Raitt. Several hard-belting tunes are on the album, including "I Fell in Love" (penned by longtime Bostonian Tom Hambridge, who now lives in Nashville) and " 'Til I Found You," which she cowrote with Hambridge. But there's also more variety and more soul tunes on the new album, exemplified by "Alone" (written by Tommy Sims, who also wrote "Change the World" for Eric Clapton) and the gospel-soul-edged "The Feeling the Music Brings." She cowrote that with her husband, whose band plays on it. (She actually scrapped an earlier version of the album because she felt it didn't have enough soul.) The new album will also be remembered as one of the final proj ects by recently deceased producer Tom Dowd, famous for work with the Allmans and Clapton. "He was an amazing person," says Tedeschi. "He was so full of life and ideas. He was everything from a nuclear physicist - he had worked on the Manhattan Project - to a masterful engineer. He had a great mind. And he got to see my son, Charlie, before he died. That meant a lot." Tedeschi will tour on her own next year, but this fall she has agreed to join the Other Ones, at the request of Phil Lesh, with whom she jammed on "Lovelight," "Midnight Hour," and "Hard to Handle" on New Year's Eve in Oakland, Calif. She will be singing on many more songs this fall. "They're sending me a tape with 36 songs on it!" she says. "It will be a learning experience. I'm used to singing lead, but I'll be doing backup. But how many people get to play with a band with this much of a history? I'm very lucky."
