Thanks for all the wishes, y'all a great bunch! Good to see BigMike in the house.
OK, we saw Derek last night. The Count sitting in all night and Jimmy half the night. They were ready to play and we were treated to a band hitting on all cycles. You want to talk about hitting the note. Have mercy. This was the first time I have seen Derek that I could clearly understand Mike Mattison. By far the best mix ever for dTb shows I have attended. I am usually in the Derek zone, and can't hear the PA anyway, but this night, I opted for the seats. Mike was the most confident I have ever seen him, and he put on a show. It was very powerful, the performance of Mike Mattison. From a whisper to a scream, as the cliche goes.
No set list, I get way too caught up in the music to keep up with such, but from the first note, Derek's tone entranced, and enraptured, and made whole, everyone with a beating heart. A sea of dancing and smiling people....
The opening notes to Teri Sahib>Maki>Teri provided me a moment of crystal clear clarity, the first of several. I am hearing the unadultered tone of some far higher entity, one that is very pleased to be so worshipped.
Jimmy came out for the last song of the first set, and Kicking Bach was offered up, and a more gorgeous and intense version would be hard to imagine. The word virtuoso is a pale descriptor for musicians like Derek and Jimmy.
The second set was amazing, of course. All night, the band was pushing the tempo, just fired up. Right from the first song. Reminded me of the ABB set from 9.16.71. High energy and uptempo. An amazing thing, Derek and Jimmy were 'trading fours', Jimmy would play a phrase, Derek would answer, etc...but instead of answering, Derek would continue the phrase. Then Jimmy, then Derek, then....well, you get the picture. One long line, or phrase, two guitars, one mind. There was also lots of traditional call and response, 'traditional' used loosely here. There was some sick and intense interplay. This will be a highly sought after tape....After a particularly brilliant solo from Todd, Mike says, "Todd Smallie, bass.....daaaaaaamn." Count M'Butu played his ass off, pure and simple. Kofi played some of the best flute solos I have ever heard from him, and his keyboard work was beyond superb. Rico fueled and propelled the band. His energy level was off the charts.
They played all the good stuff...Afro Blue, Teri Sahib, Goin Down Slow, Gonna Move, Joyful Noise, Like Anyone Else, Leaving Trunk, 'Atlanta' Soul Stew, that really nice piano number that starts out...I wish I could Fly...or something like that, not sure of the name...Preachin Blues, Kickin Bach, Feel So Bad, Voluntered Slavery, For My Brother, 44 Blues, Freddy's Dead...prolly forgetting a couple...
I was literally surrounded with good friends from the list and web site. I did not see Cee Cee, or Nancy Solomon-Stutts, or Steverino...the only disappointments of the night...
It was also our 21st Anniversary, my beautiful wife and me. A very special night on many levels.
Look out Charlotte, Derek and them are fired up!

hey gang good morning:cool:
Listen here you lot!
It's not just the US of A that loves ABB!
There's a bunch of us Bowens comin' over to the Beacon from England in March, and we are sure lookin' to have a good 'un.
We need to get tickets, ideally for the second Saturday. Any clues for on-line links?
Come on now. Clue us in!
I would like to thank my ABB family for all the love and support you have given me though some very hard times. I received several e-mails about my post, several from people I have never met.
When I stumbled upon this website several years ago, I never imagined that I would meet and talk to so many, many wonderful people. I am a very lucky person, indeed.
I would like to wish you all a very happy, healthy New Year. Hopefully, we will meet on the road next year and share the music that has touched us all so deeply. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
I love you all...........THANK YOU !!!!
Hey BigMike.......
Nice to see you again....B2P memories too...:)
Hope all is well........Happy Holidaze too all.......

Big Mike is back !!!! Good to see you out of lurk mode, my friend. Hope we can get together soon now that you are in Florida.
Oh, Big Mike! Of course! It took me a while to put 2 and 2 together. Glad to hear from you again. 🙂 🙂 Check your Private Messages for my info.
Oh yeah, merry Christmas and beat Michigan.
Lee are you saying that the Big 10 is overrated? You don't think any of em will win a bowl game????
Pac 10 is 2-0. But we are the worst conference right??? Go figure?
Marley my friend, thanks for the welcome but we have seen at least 6 shows together. I've been around since the early days of the GB and am user 29 on the new GB (thanks Lana and Roland and Merry Xmas). You would remember me if you saw me. SAy hi to your dad for me. Now, I know who you are and with your credentials you just need to send me your address and I will put one right in the mail for you. Also, do you have that 4/15/2000 show were they do Dazed and Confused. Strap in dude for that one. Let me know if you want that one too. We will hopefully see each other during the Beacon run. I've been to a bunch of Beacon shows when you were there. Good to hear from you.
Hey Folks,...Hope all are doing well, and had an excellent Christmas too. I got the Gov't Mule CD/DVD for Christmas, The Deepest End, and checked out the first half dozen songs on the DVD portion a little bit ago, and WOW, it blew me away. I've been hearing the Mule for quite a few years now, but it's something that keeps growing on me, gradually, and i'm really starting to dig this band. Excellent DVD. Anyway, hope all have a great weekend.
Peace,...Neil
Welcome aboard, Big Mike! Sorry that you've been through some hard times, but this is a great place for easing your blues and talking about some great music. Post often. 😉
I'd love to get in on that show offer if it's still open.
Watched the movie "Bend It Like Beckham" tonight. Pretty good if you haven't seen it yet.
WOW, this must be oldies night. Coming out of light lurk mode after 2 or 3 real hard years. I was shocked how many folks I knew (Bird72 who really hooked me on trading shows), HotLantaTim, WoodyCA, EasyMichael, Old Coot, BigSixPeachHead, GreatScott, Debbie, Peachnutt (the real deal), BillyEdins). Hi guys. And I like the new names I saw (Blackdog and Smiling Jack). Anyway, Merry Christmas, etc to all.
In honor of Xmas, will offer B&P of some live early Gov't Mule stuff. Got this back when the Mule site had a link to some guy's server in Vermont. Some real gems. Most important, a version of Roadhouse Blues w/ Berry Oakley Jr. on bass and lead vocals, Warren on slide and I think lead, and at the end someone says, 'and Allen Woody on guitar' (god I miss him. He was a monster and I at least got the chance to hear him hit some serious notes), and speaking of monsters, Matt Abts on the drrums. This song will take the paint off your car. Also a version of Dreams w/ Gregg Allman on lead vocals on a Nov. 20th show), an acoustic version of Soulshine w/ Tim Reynolds on guitar that is just sick, a great The Same Thing, I Shall be Releaased with Warren on slide. And what god sent us Warren Haynes? I'll fill a disk.
I'll take anyone who wants one.
Currently living in Stuart, FL. Anyone down here???
And I just want to raise a glass to the Allman Brothers and / or Dickey Betts for all they have done for us.
Big Mike
Howdy everyone. thank God the holiday madness is past us. At least kind of. Next weekend we have the whole family over for good Jewish deli (hard to come by in Santa Clarita) have to import from the SF valley. Then my annual homemade Italian spaghetti fest for Superbowl. Have a safe rest of your time off if you are lucky enough to have some.If not, play hookey, after all you can blam it on the flu, mad cow etc.
