Headline: ALLMANS BACK, BLAZIN' AT THE BEACON
BY JIM FARBER
DAILY NEWS MUSIC CRITIC
THE ALLMAN Brothers' music transcends time, but does it do as well with space?
It wouldn't seem that way.
Last year, the Southern institution found itself exiled from its annual March perch at the Beacon Theatre - usurped by a doomed Cirque du Soleil show - forcing them to trudge 100 blocks north to the United Palace Theater.
With fans baffled by the uptown address, the band canceled almost as many shows as it played.
Last night, the world righted itself, and the Allmans returned to their Beacon home for the 21st year, as if nothing ever happened.
The outlines of last night's show weren't much different from ones they've given since they split with key guitarist Dickie Betts a decade ago.
Yet, on closer inspection, each show has an of-the-moment spontaneity that not only separates the years but also one night from another.
Last night proved it conclusively by starting with a tuneup that turned into a 15-minute jam. The piece went a long way toward obliterating any stereotype of the band's sound, having more in common with Miles Davis' '70s fusion jazz than anything from the world of Southern rock.
From there, the guys moved into a fiercely funky take on "Walk on Gilded Splinters," as well as a 12-bar blowout on "Worn Down with the Blues."
Classics like "One Way Out" or "Trouble No More" got less attention from the players than lesser-knowns like "Woman Across the River," which inspired guitarist Derek Trucks' runs of unusual texture and dexterity.
Still, what the band played mattered less than how they played it. Seemingly enlivened by their return home, last night they played in a way that fulfilled the greatest jam band goal - to spin solos that could go on forever.

Happy Birthday Debbie!
Looking forward to seeing friends today and tomorrow!
Lana, I'm in for the prayer session! Power by numbers and where so many need well wishes and positive vibes, it only seems fitting! See you soon!
Prayers to you and your family Luke. I hate to hear your daughter was hurt, hope she can make a full recovery as possible.

705 guest onlne!
Wow, I believe that is the most I have ever seen. The MSG/Comcast On Demand free ABB shows from last year and Moogis advertising must have work. Good for them.

Luke- best of luck to your daughter. Good to keep the blessings you mentioned front and center. That will certainly help during the road to recovery.
Wow...the news of the quake and tsunami is sobering. Another huge dose of "perspective" has been doled out by Mother Nature--focusing the lens yet again.
:fanfare: :birthday: Debbie!!! :fanfare: :birthday:

if anyone is interested... ABB is currently matched against Led Zep in a 64 team rock band bracket for the Herd with Colin Cowherd a sports talk show on espn radio. we are down big now but with your help i think we can pull it off. ABB is an 8 seed (total BS) and won the first round match up vs the white stripes. it is a big time national radio show and it would be cool if we could pull off the upset vs the number 1 seed Led Zep.

Luke that post was beautiful and every word you said is true!! if only every person knew and accepted what you just said! God has blessed us ALL everyday and so many days we forget to acknowledge him at all. "Backsliding" is just human nature, that is the exact reason that he sent us a saviour bc we cannot save ourselves. I am so glad that your daughter came thru her surgery with a little progress....praying for more healing every day. GOD BLESS you and your daughter and your family.
