Great news, Jody...couldn't happen to a nicer soul. A Brent update... The 2 best retinologists at the Eye Clinic are working with him now. They believe they got everything fixed this time. Follow-up yesterday looked good, but they told him not to get his hopes up too much. 3rd major eye surgery in 4 months. He will have no vision in that eye for 3 weeks, then a gradual return over 4-6 months. He has to sleep on his stomach, can't look up, etc. Hurting financially. He's really going to have to be tough for awhile. Saw some pictures of Isaac Pike's house. In Rainsville. Nothing but rubble. Not even a foundation. He lived through it, wasn't hurt. His wife and kids were not home when it hit. That entire county is without power. My mind can't comprehend the magnitude of the devastation here. Still 570 missing people in Tuscaloosa County alone.

Osama Bin Laden is DEAD, killed by US ground forces and his dead a$$ DNA tested. Thanks to our brave troops that took on this exceptionally dangerous mission. Great day for America and hopefully a rallying point to regain some sense of unity. We never gave up we never stopped looking.

great Duane read 🙂 Rusty, thanks for continued updates....keeping all in my prayers.. Rainey, I thought of you at the Gregg show.... Friday was a very long day for the McFamily...our little darling Ashley got stuck with me an ole Grandpa...(she prefers weekends with Mama and Brother) anyway, Gregg comes strolling out on stage, somehow it hadnt sunk in who exactly we were going to see, until Gregg sauntered out. Ash elbowed me and said, "oh look, isnt that Duane's Brother?". ok, that tickled me.. earlier, she heard a guitar riff playing on the background music, instantly recognized Dickey . Cant think of the name of song "Life Without You Baby?" but it wasnt until after the first couple of opening numbers , she really surprised me, caught me off-guard... with a hint of disspointment in her voice, she muttered "they're not going to do Blue Sky, are they?" 🙁

Happy Good ol Sunday morning to all! Well, we found out that what passed through our neighborhood was an F-2 tornado. As bad as it sucked (okay - pun intended), it was no where near as bad as the F-4's and beyond that wrecked the communities of Tuscaloosa, Pratt City , Concord and other areas. Some of these places (Concord, especially) are literally just gone from the earth. Donna and I are doing quite well. We are blessed with two jobs, so we are financially fit. A little inconvenienced, but we'll be fine. I hope to post a list of reputable organizations that are taking donations for the much, much less fortunate. The Red Cross is a fine outfit. Start with them, but I'll try to find some community specific groups later this week. There are a lot of families who desperately need help. I also want to send my prayers out for brother Brent! The guy's had some issues and episodes over the past couple of years. Thinking and praying for Brent this Sunday morning. Thanks again to all for the calls and e-mails. Peace and love to all of y'all! "Rusty" and Donna

From: Michael Katon Subject: Duane Allman 1970 LAX Thanks for posting this!...after reading what you wrote just now about Duane I'd like to share an interesting story about Duane....around 1970 I was a teenager on my first far away trip from home ( Michigan)...I got on a plane for the first time in my life at the Detroit airport and got off in Los Angeles...I went there to visit my brother who had been living there for several years playing music and being an artist (he lived in Venice)my brother said I better get out to L.A. if I was serious about being a musician so I did...the first thing that freaked me out after getting off the plane was seeing a real live palm tree outside the exit door at LAX...my brother wasn't there on time to pick me up so I walked back in to find a pay phone to call him...so I find the pay phone and this guy walks up like he's waitin' for me to get done with the phone...I had my suit case and guitar case with me sittin' at my feet while calling my brother...anyway all of the sudden I realize it's Duane Allman!....After no answer from my brother I hang up and Duane says, "how ya doin' man?"...I go, "I'm OK man...do you need the phone?"...he says, "no...I just wondered what kind of guitar you have in that case"...I go, "it's a Gibson SG"....he goes,"Let's check it out"....so we squat down right in the middle of LAX ...I had to pull my knife out and cut off all the masking tape that me and my Dad had wrapped around the case...and he helped me pull off the tape!..... when I open it up he says,"man I've got one exactly like that!...that's a really nice one man!...he asked me in a very polite way,"do you mind if I pick it up?"...I said "Hell no!"...so he very carefully pulled it out of the case and hit a couple licks!....right in the middle of the airport while we are still squated down with people walking all around us!...he asked me where is was from and where was I playing...and what was I doing in L.A. etc... and I told him my story and told him that I had his record and that we did his songs in my band back home...and he said,"really? which ones?" I told him...he said,"wow..thanks man, that's cool to hear!".......He handed me back the guitar ...I put it in the case...we stood up and he said,"well I have a plane to catch...he held out his hand and said, "what was your name?"...I said, "Mike"....so he's shaking my hand and says, "well Mike it was nice to meet you and thanks for letting me check out your guitar"...he said,"keep pickin' them blues brother...yer gonna make it!".....then walked away into the airport..... He was totally polite and unassuming....and treated me (a skinny little pimple faced teenager) like I was a fellow brother musician....and that stuck with me to this day.....I still have the guitar and some of the masking tape is still on the case.....Duane was an Allman Brother...but that day so long ago he made me feel like he was my brother................Michael Katon

Here's a nice review of Warren's new album from the Buffalo News... 3 1/2 stars We already know that Warren Haynes is one of the finest electric guitar soloists going. His work with the Allman Brothers Band, the Dead and his own Gov't Mule has assured Haynes a slot in the hall of six-string legends. Haynes can blow with the best of them. But "Man in Motion," his new solo album, reveals a side of Haynes that may surprise some. It's an album of killer R&B and Stax-style soul songs that is centered on his eminently soulful singing. No overtly lengthy jams, no Cream-style power-trio workouts -- just serious Memphis sounds, tracked with the help of such luminaries as George Porter Jr., Ian McLagan, Ruthie Foster and Ivan Neville, among others. Don't fret, jam-lovers -- it's not like Haynes doesn't solo here. He does, often and well, opener "Man in Motion" being only the first example of many. It's just that the groove is never sacrificed in the process. Haynes and Co. tracked the album live, inside Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studios, and that in-the-room vibe is certainly a plus. It's Haynes' songwriting and singing, though, that carry the day for the most part -- even if the ensemble playing is often downright exquisite. The man who penned "Soulshine" for the Allman Brothers Band has delivered a handful of emotion-soaked soul burners in that mode here. "A Friend To You" is a shining example of this ballad-based aspect of Haynes' writing. Haynes has also proven himself to have a more supple, funkier side to his musicianship than one might have imagined. Spontaneous, sometimes playful, and always soulful, "Man in Motion" is a welcome addition to the already considerable Haynes oeuvre.
