We went to Applebees too a little late. I tried to tell Pam, Rusty and the Mrs's that linus & randy had probably moved things next door to Hooters but I must not have been very convincing.
I'm not to proud to suggest it for next year though!
By the way "Mrs's" was a poor attempt to make Mrs plural. Nice to meet you Rusty & Donna.
Thanks for the reviews. Great day for a Party in the Park at Arlington. As my brother was the "6th caller" at WCKG, were sitting in Steve "Disco Demolition" Dahl's suite, and watching the ponies run. Well, gotta go practice my tried and true horse picking method.
Einie, Meenie, Miny and some band touring with the ABB this summer.
Linus, great review!
Jeff,
Thanks for the info on those summer Rads dates. I don't feel too bad about missing tonite. Their website is pretty lame and those dates aren't listed yet but the shows around those days are close to NY so it makes sense. That Brookhaven show sounds great. Would love to see Jorma and the Rads at the same gig.
The blues cruise is great. They tore it up last year. The boat was rockin . All the other boats we passed must of thought it was a pirate ship. It was worth every penny to go on both the early and late cruise. They had the crowd going wild pulling into the dock with their cover of Grand Funk's " I'm your Captain " I was hanging with some Iron workers from New Orleans who were helping out at Ground Zero and they heard the rads were playing. It was quite a good time for them to see their home team on a cruise around NY. They went nuts when the captian cruised close to Lady Liberty while their favorite band was jamming. I remember them playing Dear Prudence in the first set and I've got a Feeling in the second. Two of my favorite Beatles tunes.
I have said in the past I would get married again if the Rads would play the reception...great band and a highlight of NOLA trips for me.Their tunes and sense of humour( as baked a mine!) makes me think Little Feat. Can you imagine Malone and Lowell together,my ribs hurt thinkin about it.
...and BTW, my friend Jimmy Walker is in the air en route to NYC this morning. He's a big Radiators fan, I left him a cell phone msg. about the BB King show. If any of y'all go, he'll be tall, slim, wearing an Alabama cap, will be accompanied by a rounder guy, glasses, moustache. Drop by, ask, "Are you from Gadsden?" He has great ABB tales, took guitar lessons in Daytona from Sylvan Wells, Gregg and Duane's guitar teacher.
Linus, put the blame on me, not Appleby's....there wasn't very much response to our preparty posts, certainly nothing like 2002. And I was unsure if I was going to make it in time, as my date had to work till 3, show started at 6:30. We made it in about 5:45, Brent and Cindy had set up with a view of the door, StickT and his son were beside us, Billy and Aikens had already left. In 2002, I talked to the manager in advance, they informed the staff. I didn't do that this time, so it's my fault they were clueless.
Tom,
I too try not to miss the Rads when they are in town, but unfortunately I will not be able to attend either BB’s or IMAC this weekend. I also miss the Irving shows, a much more “lenient” venue than BB’s.
The Rads are doing the Blues Cruise this year: August 17.
They also will be playing at Brookhaven Amphitheater, on Long Island, with Hot Tuna, Sam Bush and Railroad Earth on July 16….this should be a great show and only $20 for lawn and $30 reserved.

My friends buddy had the Rads play his wedding…I guess it helps that his name is D’Addario, as in J D’Addario guitar strings.
Merlin, hope your up for BB’s….ENJOY!!
Long Live Fishhead Music…27 years and counting!!!
Have a great weekend everyone!!
Jeff
I have posted things that have offended people in the past and have apologised. Thanks to the kind hearts on this GB they forgave me. TanDan you are a good man and I have only had postive interactions with John F as well. So I would say that its harder to forgive than shut a door but it makes you an even better man.Just my 2 cents.
Oh and Southpaw its time to give a Good Morning to all around here.
:alarm:  :bounce: :fanfare:
Scored front row tickets for the Toronto show.......YEAH BABY !!!
Ok, part 2 of the review. If you're wondering about the wisdom of a joint bill with LS, you only need to comparethe size of the crowd with the last time the band played Oak Mountain. I'm going to call it a near sellout, because I don't know whether the vacancies were no shows. When you combine that with splitting PA and light costs it's a good business and musical decision, IMHO.
Let's talk about the Allman Brothers Band. The good, bad and ugly. Started off with Revival, typical easy note perfect rendition that told the LS crowd, we're still the guys you know and love, even if you haven't heard us in a while. Followed by AWTNM, where as usual Derek tore it up on the solo. I think this was the point that I realized it was going to be a better than average ABB night. Warren's outro was killer. Again they hit the thing the crowd was familiar with and got the buy in.
At this point we got the first curve ball, End of the Line. One of my favorites, but not always in heavy rotation in the last few years. Worried Down With the Blues followed with some truly incindiary playing.
Continuing the theme of balancing the casual/ain't seen 'em since '75 fan with the hardcore we got treated to Midnight Rider and Statesboro back to back. A few years ago, I nominated both of these songs for a vacation, because I was tired of them. They didn't go away, yet they had new life last night. There was something about seeing a near sellout house singing with an old friend on Midnight Rider that did my heart good. Statesboro with Warren on slide may have been the best version I've heard in over 30 years of seeing the Brothers post Duane. If there was ever a night where I would have wanted Butch to roll around the kit and Warren take it off again like Duane did at Ludlow Garage this one was it. Absolutely one for the ages.
Next Up, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. I love the song, maybe my favorite by The Band. it fits the persona of the ABB perfectly. The playing was really good, although on this one Derek seemed to be having real problems with his guitar. However, it seemed as good as it was it lost some of the momentum of the show. I also thought some of the fills were a little sloppy and Gregg had another brain fart on the vocal.
Rocking Horse. Sheeshhhh!!!!!!!!!!! This one reminded the fans what a band that musically attacks a song, kills it and brings it home for dinner looks like. Derek broke a string on the end of his solo and as he was replacing the guitar, I realized how much he contributes to the toughness of the song. A noticable drop of in power while he was out, and with Warren in the band that's saying something. Drop dead killer. This was followed by Stand Back, one of my favorites. Gregg didn't seem to be in sync with the band on this one and the band didn 't seem to be locked on the principal riff. The only point all night where I was disappointed.
How can you describe back to back Dreams/Mountain Jam? During Warren's truly outstanding solo the most interesting thing was watching and listening to the interplay between Derek on rhythm and Oteil. The rhythm playing on this showed Derek's growth as a guitarist more than anything else he played all night. I was enthralled. There were times during this or Rocking Horse (I can't remember which) where Warren and Oteil were faced off and I had flashbacks to Dickey and BO facing off and whipping each others butt musically the first time I saw the band in '72. Mountain Jam was one for the ages. Something about Oak Mountain brings out outstanding performances of this song. They did some things with it that were a little different in places, which was really fun. Dropping directly into One Way Out was a really nice touch.
Encore was Southbound. Played well, but I really don't care if I ever hear this one again. I'm tired of it and live it lacks the rhythmic subtlety of Brothers and Sisters.
As usual I got ticked at security at the venue. While I appreciate their valiant attempt to keep folks from the cheap seats from degrading the value of my ticket, at times they were obtrusive.
Now the ugly. Showed up at Applebees about 5:45. The folks at the door didn't have a clue what I was talking about. Randy, it may be time to move the meet and greet to somewhere else along the road.
Any Metro NY area folks going to the Radiators at BB Kings tonite ? They always put on a great show. I usually don't miss their area shows but I really can't swing this one. Hopefully they'll play the blues cruise again this summer. I really miss the wild shows they used to do at Irving Plaza. And their sneak attack show at the old Tobacco Road was awesome. Check them out if you can. ( In keeping this plugg ABB related - Gregg sings midnight rider with them on their recent DVD ) There's cool footage of him sound checking with them at Tipitinas.
I'm really slacking on shows this years so far since I'm saving most of my income for my wedding in the fall. So far I've only caught the Big House Show and Rat Dog at the beacon. I might incorporate Dickey Betts this summer as part of my bachelor party and I'll try and hit the Jones Beach.
Wish I could have the Rads at my wedding like Warrren did.
Have a great weekend all.
Loved your post Jeanne!!
Coming up from the #7 this morning, right at the New York Public Library I encountered a homeless man. He had a foam chair (y'know one of those that flips out and becomes a single bed) and a shopping cart of belongings. On a cardboard sign, scribbled in green marker:
"Tell Me Off...$2"
I didn't want to tell him off but I gave him a buck for giving me a chuckle. He smiled. Lucy's 5 cent advice booth sure has changed!
The sun was sparkling off the top of the Chrysler Building and that always makes me smile. Don't sweat the small stuff. Find the positive in a day and let it make you feel good.
Happy Friday, all.
Hey,now!:)
"Can't we all just get along?"
Everything that people post here should be taken lightly,y'all!
We ARE just "family",here,afterall!
This is a place where people are supposed to join together & become bound by the "ABB Brotherhood"!
Everyone has opinions!
Anyway....I have been enjoying the reviews & some of the posts over the past coupla days!
I haven't been able to "stop by"...so I had to back-page about 10 GB pages!!
This sista has had QUITE the week!
I had to stay a couple of days in the hospital for a bad bout with kidney stones!!(never had anything like THAT before!)
Everything is good NOW!
Just have to take it easy for a week or so!
Really...I feel a 100 times better!
Glad to be home!!:)
Glad to be breathing the fresh morning air that's spiced with summer smells...glad to see my kids faces...glad to check in here with my other "family"!!!
I love how this site helps keep everybody connected to the ABB live experience...even when we all can't physically be there!!(For whatever reason!)
I love the emotion everybody seems to pour out(in some way or another)about each own individual experience!
It is so cool to "feel" what each person feels....to be there with them when you read it...priceless!!
Hey!
That reminds me!
Oteil & Peacemakers are playing @ the Mad Frog in Cincinnati on 5/27!!
(Just 2 weeks from today!)
I'll be there!!
I might not be dancing as much as usual...but I'll be there!!
Who's going with me!!?;)
Best vibes to everybody on this bee-U-tee-full day!!
Just wanted to thank the ABB for not only one, but two shows up in Canada this year. I'll be ordering my front row seats in 45 minutes for both shows. It will sure save me a lot of hassels crossing the border, but I'll probably do it anyways as I'll want to hit more than 2 shows.
Thanks
Max
I too second the emotion that John is a great guy - incredibly generous with the music and maybe went a little overboard with the content of his post - but I do know he meant no harm and has apologized and retracted the post - nuff said - let's not make more of this -
Play some music!!!
what Lammie said John..
Hey JohnF don't go anywhere, ya hear? 🙂
I just heard High Cost on the radio and I was thinking how much this song has grown on me. Love the chord progression and Derek's cut at the end. Although they obviously don't play a note on it, this song has Duane and Dickey all over it and I mean that in the most positive way all around. 😀
Have a great weekend and safe travels to all the bros and sis on the road.
Last saw LS Oct 15, 1977, 5 days before the crash...
