pretty accurate review of the mule show in Philly this past weekend, except that it was Friday, right? Southern-style band rocks the Tower By Jamie Heron, CORRESPONDENT11/29/2006 Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule stormed onto the stage Saturday night with guitars blazing and drums pumping. This retro rock was pure and loud and the look of satisfaction was placed on the fans' faces the moment the first chord was strummed. A diverse group of fans, mostly in their 40's and early 50s, with bearded, pony-tailed men displaying their latest Harley Davidson or Allman Brothers tie-dye T-shirts. Advertisement They all had one thing in common; the desire to hear some real rock 'n' roll not pushed at them by corporate America, but instead generated from a side project of The Allman Brothers band founded in the mid-90s. The two and a half hour set was filled with classics; cover tunes and cuts off their latest release High and Mighty that they are touring in support of. One look at he band, and it is clear that they are not about an image but more into their good jams and the mood they create and blend so smoothly from one song to the next. Dressed in blue jeans and a plain black T-shirt, Haynes looked like a working class guy who made it to the big stage. The set kicked off with the song "Brand New Angel" off of the new album. During two sets, the band performed five new songs. They went into "Bad Little Doggie" one of their classics with a catchy verse that echoed the song title and a solid guitar riff. The highlight of the first set was the cover of Temple of the Dog's "Hunger Strike" originally sung by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell. This was a tough cover song to pull off, but Haynes did a good job harmonizing and strumming his Gibson Les Paul at the same time. As the song progressed they crossed into "Dear Mr. Fantasy" by Traffic. This is what makes Gov't Mule so special, their ability to incorporate a couple of songs into one big jam. It's really something to see live and it kept the show from becoming too predictable for the audience and boring for the musicians. After a 15-minute intermission, Haynes took to the stage with a Gibson Hollow body guitar and began to strum the beginning chords to The Beatles' tune "Helter Skelter." They played an excellent, and accurate, version of the song that electrified the crowd. They then went into "Thorazine Shuffle," one of their earlier well-known songs. The band was really firing on all cylinders in the second set. They played a different version of "Soul Shine" with a reggae feel to it that is different then the studio version, but still it sounded fresh. Haynes played tribute to one of his idols by playing the Jimi Hendrix classic "Little Wing." Fans danced widely and applauded in between a flurry of beats, as drummer Matt Abts vigorously performed a 15-minute percussion solo that was reminiscent of the Grateful Dead era of live songs. Gov't Mule left the stage with the fans chanting for more and they returned with the encore by Neil Young, "Cortez the Killer." Warren's playing on this song sounded so much like Young's you would think it was he in disguise. The Tower Theatre is a great place to see a live show because the acoustics are perfect and the sound is not blotchy at all. The appearance of the turn of the century opera house gives way to a first class rock 'n' roll venue far superior to the grunge warehouse halls of the city. If you have a taste for classic rock 'n' roll make sure you check out Gov't Mule the next time they are in town.

happy birthday to liquid lite Yan and Brent! I disagree with Woody's opinion on the guitarist in GA&F. I thought he was really good. sounded great and had nice touches. Honeytribe was fair. Pedro's guitar sounded poor and I did not care for any of his slide work. peace and love--scotty

My friend's husband has been found in a hospital which he somehow neglected to inform his family about - the hospital had called his wife for information which is how she found out where he's been since Friday - but the kicker is that she had been calling hospitals and so had the police to find him and the hospitals never told them he was there! But at least his daughter knows where he is now.
