Great to see a post from Willie Howard! Love you bro!
Over the last several months Duane Trucks and several other friends have called me to tell me to check out Bhojanics in Decatur, Ga for their Wednesday night jams. Tonight I finally made it and now I know what they were talking about! I believe Duane Allman said something to the effect of “music in its purist form is music that is played for free.” Tonight I heard music that reminded me of why I love it so much. Duane Trucks on drums, Grant Green, Jr. on guitar (in the second set), Gar on Tablas, the Count on congas and a keyboard, bass and sarod player rounded out the band. Amazing jams all night long…I was mesmerized. Bruce Hampton sat in and sang “Susan T” - a new cut off his latest CD that Hittin’ the Note will soon carry. Grant Green sang and played a twenty minute version of “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Two sets were simply amazing and I just had to tell you about it - because music matters!
I got a chance to chat with the Col. A little bit and he was telling me about the his new CD, Give Thanks to Chank. It’s a perfect title and for those that know – Chank is indeed the Mayor of all coolness. He said there is one line in the title song that comes from a song Duane Allman wrote for Chank. Who knew?! He also had a lot of fun telling me how the song “Susan T” came about. I just love the camaraderie between the Col and the Trucks family. Read more about this amazing CD in the next issue of Hittin’ the Note.
What a wonderful evening of bliss – goodnight…
