So Relix is doing a 40th Thribute to the ABB? That is very cool. Thanks for the heads-up, Lee. Wish the Dead's fans gave the ABB that much respect....

I know the HTN 40th Anniversary ABB issue is out (can't wait to see that), but I have just re-subscribed to Relix one issue ago and today I got their 40th tribute issue. Wow!! Articles by Oteil and Chuck, an interview with Butch and Jaimoe and a free CD insert with two tracks from Jaimoe's band. Get this one as well as the HTN issue for sure.

Hey Matt! Long time no see, Bro! Yeah, I think if we hadn't scurried off the elevator (Big Dave from Meechigan and me went past our 3rd floor to the 7th or 8th to hear more of Butch's rant) Butch would have thrown us off....he was not in a good mood.

It sure sounded good. What a shock to hear it though. I liked the Raleigh version a week later too.

Hey Michael...... The end of "Please Call Home" is a tear jerker to see Callahan wave good bye. We saved that photo and put it at the end of the slide show presentation at his memorial service. We were all up in Macon for Buffalo's Memorial service when the interviews were done in the living room @ The Big House.

Hey Rich............. I was on that elevator as well. Butch wanted to know when we were getting off the elevator so he didn't have to answer any more questions. One of the best 3 day runs I can ever remember.

Scott, other than Gregg's vocal on Blue Sky, that version of Blue Sky from the Fox was the closest version to the original arrangement on EAP, including Dickey's with GS. Although I generally prefer his versions of his tunes to the ABB's, BS is one which I have never liked as much as the original arrangement. The original is in a different key (help me out, guitar players) than the one Dickey usually plays it in now....although I did like it when he tacked on the Franklin's Intro. Butch was on our elevator at the Georgian Terrace after the show the night they played BS at the Fox and he was NOT a happy camper about playing it....

They did "Blue Sky" at the Fox in Atlanta in '04, but I think that was as a warmup to the EAP run-thru of which you speak. I thought it was quite good (and very faithful to the original), but hearing Gregg singing it was, with all due respect, kind of weird for me. Maybe I would have felt differently had Oteil (or even Warren) sang it. What I remember quite well was the full-blown "Blue Sky" segment during "Mountain Jam" at the Atlanta show in '03. I would definitely like to hear that again! 😎

True, TIm. But so far they have not played songs where Dickey was the lead vocalist except when they played Eat a Peach start to finish. At least, to my knowledge.

ARGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I now see dates booked for Washington State, Oakland and San Diego, but NO L.A. On top of it, tickets go on sale for San Diego whilst I'm in NYC and with the Doobies, I'm going nuts!

Good review. Although I think that the writer is mis-informed if he expects to hear Blue Sky.

Nice Derek interview: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=31943 Here's my favorite exchange: AAJ: There's that story that Tom Dowd told of being at an Allman Brothers show with Eric, and Duane opened his eyes during a solo and saw Eric and stopped playing. DT: I've heard that same story, and that's when the "Layla" thing happened. Eric came out to see The Allman Brothers and Eric actually mentioned that show and Tom Dowd taking him to see Duane and the band somewhere in South Florida. Eric talked about how impressive it was, those guys -scraggly haired (laughing)—just playin' their asses off with something to prove. AAJ: I was really moved by the way you and Eric communicated when you started doing "Why Does Love Got to be so Sad" as the tour progressed. DT: Yeah, yeah, those were some of my favorite moments of the tour. AAJ: You could just see it, in those moments there was no age difference, no question of fame or icon status, you guys were just so intimate and in the moment. Even as someone in the audience, you could just feel the spirits talking. I'm curious what that's like for the musician, do you get the sense your talking soul to soul in those moments, and does something like that forge a special bond between you? DT: I think so, definitely, when you're communicating on that level it's total trust. And all of your senses are full on in those moments, you're in a heightened sense of awareness and you're being really sensitive to the other player. You're trying to do your own thing and head down a certain path while also reacting. There were two or three nights when we played that and I felt it really happened. I felt good [laughing], it felt great! AAJ: I think Brian Wilson once said it was the language of God. DT: Yes, that's pretty much on the mark.

The Gin Mill is pretty good. They had some pre show parties there several years ago in the party room downstairs. Dick Griffin was there in 2000 and then played trombone on Liz Reed that night. 81st and Amsterdam. 442 Amsterdam Ave

I still don't know where to go before the show Friday night, I'm by my lonesome and need like minded drinking companions. Since Yogi's is closed I'm kinda lost. Saturday is shaping up nicely with a crew of old buddies showing up throughout the day, but Friday evening recomendations are greatly appreciated. (I'm buying a round, if it's less than 10 people).

The P&G on the backside of the Beacon closed as well. It had been open every day since the 1940s. We were there a couple years ago after the show (like most nights) and Derek walks in with friends. Brothers had played The Weight that night. Derek's crowd sits in the back and DT puts money in the juke box and play's The Band's original The Weight. P&G will be missed as well.
