The Allman Brothers Band

This was my second big ‘rock concert’. ABB opened for ‘Johnny Winter And’. I heard Winter and Rick Derringer doing a sound check earlier that afternoon, and I could tell this show was going to be something special! The ABB opened and performed their standard, well-rehearsed show of that era. I remember ‘Dreams’, ‘Whipping Post’, a lot of slide guitar by Duane, a lot of material from the first album, and a kind of ‘wall of sound’ arrangement that closed their show (Whipping Post?). I was fortunate enough to see the ABB with Duane and Berry twice, both times in Columbia. The second time they were the headliners (5 months later). ‘Johnny Winter And’ was also sensational, and I observed Duane and Dicky watching the show just behind the stage. A memorable night indeed.
