This is the show that got the Dead 86'd from the Beacon forever. The Grateful Dead buckin and kickin fresh out of the gate after a long Deadless year and ugly rumors of breakup, the Great Dead Drought of 1975, polished and streamlined in fluorescent Allah Blue, this show was a pressure cooker, as a near-riot of hundreds of Dead-starved fans shut down NYC traffic for blocks, and the Hell's Angels had a cordon of gleaming bikes along Broadway...

"we had seats in the loge - went down to see some friends in the orchestra - the fire exit door in the loge broke open - I saw a security guard crack his flashlight over the head of a fan as a about 100 people rushed in from the upstairs fire escape - and I said we're staying put here downstairs - the show was one of the most magnificent shows in my history as a dead fan -- Cold Rain was incredible and High Time, unbelievable -- the Dead were smart to come out quick once the mayhem began, to get the show going."
Now, my side of the story: "Goin to New York City gonna see the Grateful Dead, I'm gonna get inside if I gotta bust my head..." That was our war chant on the way to this show. we didn't have tickets, and tickets weren't even being scalped anymore, not that I could have afforded one anyway... was walking around the back of theater on rumor that Phil Lesh had thrown a handful of tix out the window... I was the exact first person to spot the burly berserker Hell's Angel on the third floor fire exit door, ripping the door, chain and all, off its hinges, and me and friend were up that escape in seconds flat, the Angel grabbed us and threw us in the door, just before a flood of maniacs came piling up behind... dove into the trenches of the aisles just in time to hear the security guards cracking kids' heads with flashlights and hollering... I kept my head down praying not to be spotted...then Allah bestowed mercy and the lights went down and the Dead revved into the best Cold Rain and Snow I have ever heard. The Blues for Allah material was all new and tight, Crazy Fingers was perfect, stellar nirvana.
So, here it is, your free (well, almost) miracle ticket to one of the most singular Grateful Dead outings ever recorded...

Update- this vine will go out next week, am smoked by work. AND... was listening to my Bettyboard of this show, and noticed a couple seconds of frizzle hash on the last few notes of Playin In the Band. To me this was like a dent on a brand new Porsche. Unacceptable. What happened was my friend packed 767 mb on the first disc, trying to have Set One be complete. Probably didn't notice, because it is 75 minutes and the burner didn't warn him. So, when I saw that cramming, I listened carefully, and found the compensation- those last perfect Jerry diamonds, besmirched by digital dirt. SO... long story longer... I went looking for a new copy, turns out last year a soundboard-audience matrix was posted on LosslessLegs. I am severely bandwidth challenged, but am having this matrix sent to me. My bet is that it is better than amazing, these matrixes are incredible. Wednesday or Thursday, will give a listen, convert to WAV and put it on a silver platter and serve it up.

Updated update: Got the matrix, and decided the audience noise was too intense, robbed the music of its almost studio-like quality. And it injures the Phil Zone badly. And clipping. Must have been nuts trying to tape this in that crowd. The audience was so rabid at this show there is plenty of it that bleeds into the soundboard anyway. Neat sounding in its own way, manic, but this night belonged to the Dead, no point in cutting it with audience noise. Should have figured it was all downhill from this incredible Bettyboard! The couple seconds of frizzle at the end of Playin in the Band was on the matrix too. Not my friend's fault. Moral of story: if it aint fixed, don't break it, that'd just be defreakin da porpoise! Three silver saucers, last seen spinnin towards Florida.

Cassidy, unreal. High Time, best I ever heard. I have hundreds of Dead shows, and this is my go-to show, probably my alltime fave. Cosmic Charlie, a rare Aoxomoxoa treat!
