The debates are the closest thing that voters have to job interviews for these guys. Granted that they typically answer the question they wish had been asked - as they dance around the one that actually was - this is where we get to see them think on their feet.
I'm not sure if the debates are the BEST means of determining a candidates worth or not. Michael Bloomberg nearly bought his way into the White House. As it turns out, he can't out-debate a fire plug. This does not mean that he would not have been a good president. He just didn't make it past the "job interview".

Me personally - I can't wait for the debates! I am also super hoping that Megan Kelley gets to be on at least one of those panels! 😉
