Ya know, if Trump consistently polls in the teens to high teens, he can run as an independent and will get a podium at the General Election debates, a la Ross Perot.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit it he ran as an Independent. I'd say the chances are pretty good.

If he does, Hillary Clinton will be the next POTUS.

I realize it's early (months away from election), but I'll go on record & say that it doesn't matter whether Trump remains a GOP contender, whether or not he gets the GOP nomination (doubtful), or whether he runs as an independent candidate. My belief is that the Democrats retain the White House. I just don't think Trump will be a factor in the final outcome. Demographics across sectors don't line up for the GOP...period.

In other words, candidates don't matter? I'm not sure about that.

I agree with that -- because of his bank account Trump will be in the race to the end, with people laughing at him all the while, and polls saying, in essence, "Donald, go home"

however (I'm naive about politics btw) -- the Republicans had 2 terms with Reagan in the 1980s, with Mr. Bush riding his coattails to a 3rd
Dems then had 2 terms with Clinton -- followed by Bush Jr.'s 2 terms for the GOP, and up to the present day with Mr. Obama's 2-term Democratic presidency
I'd like to see a Legitimate GOP candidate prevail -- it's their turn, they deserve a chance to see what they can do -- but good gosh, Not Mr. Trump, Please

Trump will continue to get all the free publicity he wants and will get all kinds of populist milage in the GOP debates, count on that.

But, thinking ahead to the primaries, that's when things get very real and very, very nasty. It was the primaries that brought the birther and secret Muslim charges forth (from Hillary's campaign) and McCain is a senile, mentally damaged father of an illegitimate black child (from the W Bush campaign).

Jeb Bush has a ton of money already, and under his velvet glove you can rest assured there is a set of brass knuckles waiting to swing...and that punch will come in the primaries...of course, provided that Trump runs as a Republican and not an independent.

Sooner or later, the Trump history is going to get dug into. Here's a good example...now, I have no idea the merit of the info within. But, keep in mind that Trump has made much of his fortunes and reputation in the world of real estate development...and in that world, everything is on paper somewhere. Deals are done with attorneys on paper. Reams and reams and reams of paper.

These are the kinds of things that will be thrown at Trump by somebody. Guaranteed.

21 Questions For Donald Trump

David Cay Johnston

I have covered Donald Trump off and on for 27 years — including breaking the story that in 1990, when he claimed to be worth $3 billion but could not pay interest on loans coming due, his bankers put his net worth at minus $295 million. And so I have closely watched what Trump does and what government documents reveal about his conduct.

Reporters, competing Republican candidates, and voters would learn a lot about Trump if they asked for complete answers to these 21 questions.

So, Mr. Trump…

1. You call yourself an “ardent philanthropist,” but have not donated a dollar to The Donald J. Trump Foundation since 2006. You’re not even the biggest donor to the foundation, having given about $3.7 million in the previous two decades while businesses associated with Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Entertainment gave the Trump Foundation $5 million. All the money since 2006 has come from those doing business with you.

How does giving away other people’s money, in what could be seen as a kickback scheme, make you a philanthropist?

2. New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman successfully sued you, alleging your Trump University was an “illegal educational institution” that charged up to $35,000 for “Trump Elite” mentorships promising personal advice from you, but you never showed up and your “special” list of lenders was photocopied from Scotsman Guide, a magazine found at any bookstore.

Why did you not show up?

3. You claimed The Learning Annex paid you a $1 million speaking fee, but on Larry King Live, you acknowledged the fee was $400,000 and the rest was the promotional value.

Since you have testified under oath that your public statements inflate the value of your assets, can voters use this as a guide, so whenever you say $1, in reality it is only 40 cents?

4. The one-page financial statement handed out at Trump Tower when you announced your candidacy says you’ve given away $102 million worth of land.

Will you supply a list of each of these gifts, with the values you assigned to them?

5. The biggest gift you have talked about appears to be an easement at the Palos Verdes, California, golf course bearing your name on land you wanted to build houses on, but that land is subject to landslides and is now the golf course driving range.

Did you or one of your businesses take a tax deduction for this land that you could not build on and do you think anyone should get a $25 million tax deduction for a similar self-serving gift?

6. Trump Tower is not a steel girder high rise, but 58 stories of concrete.

Why did you use concrete instead of traditional steel girders?

7. Trump Tower was built by S&A Concrete, whose owners were “Fat” Tony Salerno, head of the Genovese crime family, and Paul “Big Paul” Castellano, head of the Gambinos, another well-known crime family.

If you did not know of their ownership, what does that tell voters about your management skills?

8. You later used S&A Concrete on other Manhattan buildings bearing your name.

Why?

9. In demolishing the Bonwit Teller building to make way for Trump Tower, you had no labor troubles, even though only about 15 unionists worked at the site alongside 150 Polish men, most of whom entered the country illegally, lacked hard hats, and slept on the site.

How did you manage to avoid labor troubles, like picketing and strikes, and job safety inspections while using mostly non-union labor at a union worksite — without hard hats for the Polish workers?

10. A federal judge later found you conspired to cheat both the Polish workers, who were paid less than $5 an hour cash with no benefits, and the union health and welfare fund. You testified that you did not notice the Polish workers, whom the judge noted were easy to spot because they were the only ones on the work site without hard hats.

What should voters make of your failure or inability to notice 150 men demolishing a multi-story building without hard hats?

11. You sent your top lieutenant, lawyer Harvey I. Freeman, to negotiate with Ken Shapiro, the “investment banker” for Nicky Scarfo, the especially vicious killer who was Atlantic City’s mob boss, according to federal prosecutors and the New Jersey State Commission on Investigation.

Since you emphasize your negotiating skills, why didn’t you negotiate yourself?

12. You later paid a Scarfo associate twice the value of a lot, officials determined.

Since you boast that you always negotiate the best prices, why did you pay double the value of this real estate?

13. You were the first person recommended for a casino license by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Division of Gaming Enforcement, which opposed all other applicants or was neutral. Later it came out in official proceedings that you had persuaded the state to limit its investigation of your background.

Why did you ask that the investigation into your background be limited?

14. You were the target of a 1979 bribery investigation. No charges were filed, but New Jersey law mandates denial of a license to anyone omitting any salient fact from their casino application.

Why did you omit the 1979 bribery investigation?

15. The prevailing legal case on license denials involved a woman, seeking a blackjack dealer license, who failed to disclose that as a retail store clerk she had given unauthorized discounts to friends.

In light of the standard set for low-level license holders like blackjack dealers, how did you manage to keep your casino license?

16. In 1986 you wrote a letter seeking lenient sentencing for Joseph Weichselbaum, a convicted drug trafficker who lived in Trump Tower and in a case that came before your older sister, Judge Maryanne Trump Barry of U.S. District Court in Newark, New Jersey, who recused herself because Weichselbaum was the Trump casinos and Trump family helicopter consultant and pilot.

Why did you do business with Weichselbaum, both before and after his conviction?

17. Your first major deal was converting the decrepit Commodore Hotel next to Grand Central Station into a Grand Hyatt. Mayor Abe Beame, a close ally of your father Fred, gave you the first-ever property tax abatement on a New York City hotel, worth at least $400 million over 40 years.

Since you boast that you are a self-made billionaire, how do you rationalize soliciting and accepting $400 million of welfare from the taxpayers?

18. You say that your experience as a manager will allow you to run the federal government much better than President Obama or Hillary Clinton. On Fortune Magazine’s 1999 list of the 496 most admired companies, your casino company ranked at the bottom – worst or almost worst in management, use of assets, employee talent, long-term investment value, and social responsibility. Your casino company later went bankrupt.

Why should voters believe your claims that you are a competent manager?

19. Your Trump Plaza casino was fined $200,000 for discriminating against women and minority blackjack dealers to curry favor with gambler Robert Libutti, who lost $12 million, and who insisted he never asked that blacks and women be replaced.

Why should we believe you “love” what you call “the blacks” and the enterprise you seek to lead would not discriminate again in the future if doing so appeared to be lucrative?

20. Public records (cited in my book Temples of Chance) show that as your career took off, you legally reported a negative income and paid no income taxes as summarized below:

1975
Income: $76,210
Tax Paid: $18,714

1976
Income: $24,594
Tax Paid: $10,832

1977
Income: $118,530
Tax Paid: $42,386

1978
Income: ($406,379)
Tax Paid: $0

1979
Income: ($3,443,560)
Tax Paid: $0

Will you release your tax returns? And if not, why not?

21. In your first bestselling book, The Art of the Deal, you told how you had not gotten much work done on your first casino, so you had crews dig and fill holes to create a show. You said one director of your partner, Holiday Inns, asked what was going on. “This was difficult for me to answer, but fortunately this board member was more curious than he was skeptical,” you wrote.

Given your admission that you used deception to hide your failure to accomplish the work, why should we believe you now?

http://www.nationalmemo.com/21-questions-for-donald-trump/

I am aware of Trump University, it is not a college in the traditional sense. It is a business that offers people the education they need without having to spend 4 years and mega bucks to learn what they need to know to be successful. They have courses that teach you how to do things in the real business world. You don't have to waste your time with the bloated b.s. courses colleges make you take that have no application in the real world for what you want to do. It's nuts and bolts stuff. So they can say it is an 'illegal educational institution' only because educational institutions have to go thru a bunch of rigomarole to get their designations. There are legal requirements a college has to meet to call itself a college. There are many business institutes that offer certifcations to people who want to learn, nobody comes after them. Trump University's concept was a lot of people don't have the time or money to go to NYU's business school or Harvard to get their MBA, but they can learn the essential things they need relevant to what they need to do in their jobs. One of the segments of courses is Real Estate investing, another is Wealth Preservation and management, and another area is for Entrepreneurs. I think it is innovative that somebody did this. So people can balk oh but it isn't a licensed college, so what, if you can learn what you need to know, SO WHAT!

6. Concrete instead of steel girders; well in the Carribean houses made of concrete can survive 140 mph winds if a hurricane hits, the same cannot be said for other types of houses. Makes sense to build a structurally safe bldg. Look at what thermite did at WTC.

9 & 10. All construction sites use some unskilled labor. To think it does not happen is naïve.

19. Maybe gamblers prefer men. Why should he have to hire women or a particular race of people? If the people coming to utilize their services don't want women or blacks, they won't come and spend their money there. Trump is old school and traditional, from the James Bond days where if Bond went to a casino, men were at the Black Jack tables. Beautiful women were there, but as girlfriends and consorts. Are there any women black jack dealers in Monte Carlo today?

Any business person can be picked at, there is no candidate clean as a hounds tooth. Get over it.

I'm not sure about that. It takes serious coin to become President. He's getting a lot of attention for free right now, but sooner or later he's going to have to print up millions upon millions of campaign chotchkes and spend tens of millions on TV ads.

This is what Obama and Romney spent last time: https://www.opensecrets.org/pres12/

Trump is gonna spend up to quite possibly $750 million of his own money on something he might not even win?

Yes, he's rich and all that, but 3/4 of a billion dollars is a lot of money no matter who you are.

The thing is Blackhawk, he believes in what he is doing, it isn't about power, he already has that. He truly believes unless someone like himself steps in, this country is going to become a third world country and he cannot sit by and let that happen. Even if he only raises awareness, things can change because of that. Look at John Boehner, he got fed up and invited the Israeli Prime Minister to come to Congress, he just could not stand the crap in Washington anymore.

"When the economy crashed so horribly under George Bush because of mistakes they made having to do with banking and lots of other things, I don't think the Democrats would have done that," Donald J. Trump said. "I have seen things done by Republicans that are not good and are not smart, and I would not do that."

I doubt that the Republican party will feel that he represents them. He really is in a League of his own. If he created his own political party, Take Back America party, or People For America, or America First, he could assimilate some people from the Green Party, Constitutional Party, maybe even Working Families etc. and start a grassroots movement, these other parties have no real chance of winning major elections, but if they merge they could be formidable opposition to the powers that be from the other mainstream parties.

Maybe, but it will be a lot easier if Trump runs as an independent and splits the GOP vote.

Exactly if Trump runs independent Hillary could blow off the debates and still win. But to your point Martin can't see the GOP winning no matter who runs.

If they thought he had a chance at the GOP nomination or running as an Independent the Democrats would secretly help fund his campaign. Either scenario would be their wet dream 😛

That's correct. I don't see the GOP winning one way or the other (Trump or no Trump). Based upon the changing makeup of the electorate & recent voting trends in presidential elections, I challenge anyone to break down the demographics sector by sector (age, sex, & race), and show me where the GOP can pull the necessary votes.

People on the Left Team shouldn't be so smug at this point. Nutty world we live in. To discount any candidate at this point is being a little too arrogant about things.

It's all about ground game and organization. 51-49 wins, period. The right game in the right places when it comes to electoral votes is the key. Obama 2012 turned the election on four counties that they worked on for the better part of three years prior. You don't need a landslide, you need 51%, and winning an election has nothing to do with governing. I'm no fan of Karl Rove, but he forged a lot of new paths on how to win elections now.

Since one of Hillary's people was invited to the Bilderberg conference, where the BIG money is (hundred of billions of dollars), she will probably take it. [win the election] Besides people want to see Bill back there in that house. You know he'll help her out and he was good for the country.

My problem with Hillary is one of her foreign policy stances she had during her last run for the Presidency. The question was would she notify other countries (Pakistan was specifically mentioned) of our sending drones to take out high value targets, and her answer was she would let them know when the planes were in the air. I don't think that is good policy with other countries, particularly given the situation with Iran.

Even right now Turkey just agreed to let the US have access to their bases for launching drones for Isis attacks. I think that puts us more at risk for Iranian retaliation, using the bases of other countries and fighting wars to protect THEIR borders. Let them do it for themselves. I'll tell you something else, there are some Afghan talibs in Turkey, so if we end up with a war with Turkey, Iran and Syria, other nations will get involved also. It could lead to the full blown Middle East war with nukes being used. Not good.

It's a email issue but it's also a trust issue. Her trustworthiness numbers are bad and
getting worse particularly in the swing states.

In 15 months people will be able to remember they don't trust her. It's hard to win back
trust. It takes a while, sometimes never.

Still a long way until the elections and no guarantees but I like Hillary's chances at this point.

The email thing is again a current topic, may be peaking too soon on that, you are right, still a long time, the voters will have forgotten by that point.

It's a email issue but it's also a trust issue. Her trustworthiness numbers are bad and
getting worse particularly in the swing states.

In 15 months people will be able to remember they don't trust her. It's hard to win back
trust. It takes a while, sometimes never.

This thread is about Trump.

Hillary might be running against Trump, as per the discussion.

Remember that when you accuse others of swerving.

I never really cared much about swerving to be honest, and I've only called out one
person for it. When I have, just pointing out a little hypocrisy, that's all. You'll live.

And yet she still leads in the polls. The e-mail witch hunt has not resulted in her trailing in the polls. It will be distant history by the time the campaigns heat up.

Time for the GOP to move on and look for other skeletons in Hillary's closet but they are too busy fighting amongst themselves right now.

Yeah, as long as she hasn't been convicted it's just a witch hunt. I forgot. Everything about
her is on the up and up, and the poor trustworthiness numbers are unfair.

Never said that Alloak but your whining about Hillary will not change reality that she still leads all GOP wannabees in the polls. So much for your "trustworthiness" numbers.

Not in some key swing States, she doesn't. She's trailing. Exactly the places
this election will be won or lost. Keep in mind, she hasn't even been out in front
of the cameras and microphones much. When that changes, her numbers will
erode even further. Just watch.
