The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Debate

For the first time, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue has included a plus size woman, not to replace their normal jaw dropping models that men wait a year to see, but to advertise swimsuits for everywoman. The model is a swimsuit model. Photographers have said they would not have included her in the issue because the Swimsuit Issue is all about fantasy and plus size women are no man's fantasy, many men have that at home, which is why they want to see the fantasy models. So should Sports Illustrated include these models in their swimsuit edition along with the other fantasy models that have graced the covers for ages?

I think this is a very, VERY positive move for all involved, both women and men. Besides, she's a very sexy lady.
That standard of the ultra-thin bikini model who may be starving herself to look like that is an unrealistic image. Kudos to Sports Illustrated. Then again, it's about time they moved into the 21st Century.

Doesn't seem to be much of a debate, as almost all reactions I've seen about it are positive.

I think the controversy is whether or not she is "plus sized" or just not "minus sized." But even normal sized is a step in the right direction

I actually agreed with the photographer who thought that the Swimsuit issue was not the place to try to change people's minds about what is an acceptable standard for women. The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition has the branding of supermodels, some of whom have been exotic (from different international cultures).
I think there is a place for larger models in other media, but to try to raise awareness or acceptance in the Sports Illustrated issue doesn't seem to quite be the place for it. I think they have a right for their brand and traditions to be upheld.
Women should all try to be their best, as fit as they can be, but the danger in promoting plus size women is that society can give license to women to remain unhealthy. Oprah should be working out with Bob or Dolvett, (privately not on the Biggest Loser show of course). She is a pretty woman, but make up and tailored clothes do not hide the fact that she is overweight. She's a role model for many. I think there should be nice clothing for larger women but they need to work on it and become their best selves, not just accept being 60 or more pounds over their ideal body weight.
I also think the model industry should not promote anorexia for it's models, but the designers just want to make one size clothing and the model has to fit the clothes. That way the models are interchangeable. It should be the other way around. For the shows and showings, the clothes should be made to fit the models. Most people are not size 0's or at worst a 2.
We should be promoting health in women.

as I get older my standards shift.
the only two criteria that are no-no's now is if a woman doesn't love God and/or is a Jets fan.
sorry gina. 😛

Any man who has been is a relationship more than five minutes knows well there is only one answer to the question "Do I Look Fat in these Pants"?

Yes! Taking the fifth amendment. If you say yes you die immediately; if you say no you get accused of lying and die slowly.

The debate for me is to whether I should go downtown (Nashville) or stay away until after the swimsuit world premiere is done. Most of Broadway is closed until the end of the week and traffic is a nightmare. On the other hand, I can't remember the last time the stagehands were this enthusiastic about building a show.

I think I'd mosey on downtown - maybe find somebody to love.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Debate? Nothing new. Fat skinny, either way it is exploitation. Sad truth is that it is just soft core porn pretending to be wholesome jock entertainment and has always been the subject of a huge debate, carried on by millions, a "mass debate" you might say!

Well with Rex Ryan going to Buffalo I may recant! (although the rumor is there may be a place for Mark Sanchez on that team too, so there may be Jets fans shufflin' off to Buffalo!). I just can't get excited about soft (deflated) balls.
