Sanders, wife Jane, hire lawyers amid FBI probe on loan application: report

Sen. Bernie Sanders and his wife have hired defense attorneys amid an FBI probe into a loan the senator’s wife procured for Burlington College while she was school president, according to news reports.
Sanders, a Vermont Independent, and wife Jane hired a legal team in connection to a 2010 loan application Jane Sanders purportedly filed so the school could borrow $10 million to purchase 33 acres of land, as reported first by Politico.
The hiring of the attorneys was confirmed to CBS News by Jeff Weaver, the campaign manager for Sanders in his bid to win the Democratic Party nomination in the 2016 presidential race.
Jane Sanders purportedly distorted school donor levels in the loan application she filed to People’s United Bank, according to the January 2016 complaint. The liberal arts college closed that same year.
Politico also reports that federal prosecutors could be looking into allegations that Sen. Sanders' office tried inappropriately to get the bank to approve the loan.
Sanders supporter Rich Cassidy has reportedly been hired to represent the senator, and Washington defense attorney Larry Robbins has reportedly been retained for his wife.
The claims regarding the loan were filed to the U.S. attorney in Vermont by Brady Toensing, who led President Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign in the state.
Toensing told CBS that the investigation was started during the Obama administration.
Sanders has called the allegations “nonsense,” but last month said commenting on the matter would be “improper.”

CBS says that they are under FBI investigation for bank fraud. Seems they over-inflated the money figures from donors and that Bernie's office pressured the bank on the loan. Also, the number of students they hoped to get didn't pan out. They couldn't get more than 200 students.
Bequeathed amounts (money given after the donors death) were shown as present donations, even if the person was still alive. There is also the matter of some of the building funds missing.
Sounds like the business majors from "Trump U" are going to be untangling this mess for quite some time!!!!

During the first two years of Jane Sander’s tenure 12 professors quit generally citing Sander’s “twisted academic agenda.
Sanders took out a $10 million loan from People’s United Bank in 2010 to purchase 33 acres of land to be added to the college’s holdings. But in applying for the loan, the FBI is investigating as to whether or not Sanders misrepresented the school’s donor levels to make the college seem like it had more income than it actually did.
Sanders told the bank that Burlington College had an expected income $2.6 million in donations for fiscal year 2010, but in fact, the college only raised $676,000 between 2010 and 2014, a sum so small it put the school in bankruptcy by 2016.
The school had to start taking money from their scholarship fund to service Sander’s loan folly.
After Jane Sanders’ tenure as president, Burlington College went bankrupt and permanently closed its doors in 2016.
According to the feds, they are also investigating the possibility that Sen. Sanders himself intervened with the bank to get the loan approved.
Even as the investigation was started a year ago under President Barack Obama, Sanders is lambasting the FBI’s investigation as a “Trump” attack on him.

Have any of you read the letter to the FDIC that started it all. He was a member of the law firm contacted by Wendy Wilton and others to investigate if there was fraud involving the loan.
From the letter:
"According to recently released documents, this apparent fraud resulted in as much as $2 million in losses to the Diocese, and an unknown amount of loss to People's United Bank-a federally insured financial institution."
The first paragraph on page 4 is pretty interesting.

Apparently, it's not that important to me, or anyone else here, hence the crickets. If Obama started the investigation, then you are helping point out the greatness of Obama - willing to seek justice no matter the person or political party. As for the Sanders - if there is evidence of wrongdoing, then punish accordingly. But from what I've read, it sounds like a complicated civil case, and even with guilt, doesn't affect their credibility whatsoever. It only matters to the insecure who are afraid of a level playing field.
