Reactions to Obama’s ISIS Remarks at Prayer Breakfast

And, first, we should start with some basic humility. I believe that the starting point of faith is some doubt -- not being so full of yourself and so confident that you are right...
Well spoken Mr. President. However, with an attitude like that you wouldn't last one round here in the Whippin Post !
Barack Obama said that? Coming from him, that could be one of the funniest posts ever written here. Unbelievable. He continues to top himself.
Please explain what you mean. Or is this just more snark?
Gotta be snark. Clearly he could care less what the Obama actually says, other than snippets and soundbytes that can be taken out of context and twisted around to mean whatever he wants them to mean.
As far as this matter is concerned, a true act of humility would be for Obama to admit it was a terrible mistake spending 25 years in a church preaching intolerance, racism, and hatred toward it's country and fellow man.
As it is, he's fond of putting himself above the country and his professed faith, then lays out a few of our sins/shortcomings and peddles that as "humility." That's not humility, in fact it's the exact opposite.

NY Times, Feb 5
WASHINGTON — President Obama may have thought he was giving a straightforward history lesson at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday when he compared the atrocities of the Islamic State to the bloodshed committed in the name of Christianity in centuries past.
But that is not how many of his longtime critics saw it.
“The president’s comments this morning at the prayer breakfast are the most offensive I’ve ever heard a president make in my lifetime,” said Jim Gilmore, the former Republican governor of Virginia. “He has offended every believing Christian in the United States.”
Rush Limbaugh devoted a segment of his show to what he said were the president’s insults to the “whole gamut of Christians” and Twitter’s right wing piled on. Guests on Megyn Kelly’s Fox News show spent 15 minutes airing objections to the president’s comments.
“Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ,” Mr. Obama said. “In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.”
Still, the president went on to focus on the terrorism carried out under the guise of Islam, saying that the last few months have shown the degree to which faith can be “twisted and misused in the name of evil.”
“From a school in Pakistan to the streets of Paris, we have seen violence and terror perpetrated by those who profess to stand up for faith — their faith — professed to stand up for Islam, but, in fact are betraying it,” he said, describing the Islamic State as “a brutal, vicious death cult that, in the name of religion, carries out unspeakable acts of barbarism.”
Bill Donohue, the president of the Catholic League, said in a statement that Mr. Obama was trying to “deflect guilt from Muslim madmen.” He said the president’s comparisons were “insulting” and “pernicious.”
Mr. Gilmore said the comments go “further to the point that Mr. Obama does not believe in America or the values we all share.”
The White House had no comment on Thursday night about the criticism.
In his speech, Mr. Obama said the use of religion to justify violence and killings “is not unique to one group or one religion.”
“There is a tendency in us, a sinful tendency, that can pervert and distort our faith,” he said.
The talk of terrorism was the sharpest note in a speech that was otherwise a reflection on religion and humility, and it was Mr. Obama’s latest effort to avoid branding recent violence by the Islamic State or those professing common cause with it as “Islamic” extremism. His team has said that doing so would play into the hands of terrorist organizations, legitimizing their message.
Let's look at this from a different point of view.
Yes, there have been atrocities, centuries ago, by Christians in various forms. Not only against other faiths, but against differing Christian sects.
Those of you who would bring out that The Inquisition was about fighting heresy in the Catholic church need to remember that it evolved into the questioning, torture, and death of anyone not Catholic. But, let's ask these questions:
1) When was the last time Christians burned someone to death?
2) When was the last beheading by Christians?
3) When was the last time someone was told to convert to Christianity or be put to death?
4) How long has it been since the last Christian was put to death because they dishonored their family?Christianity has moved forward, the radical Muslims believe that the world should still be under the laws of the Koran, as written, almost fourteen hundred years ago.
How about black men burned to death by "so called christian" white hooded cowards in the south, post civil war, well into the 20th century. http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/black-men-were-burned-alive-bible-belt

Isn't this something, nobody here even thought of this. Right here not in the 1600's, this was going on. It is scary that is happened, and worse that I didn't even remember.

And, first, we should start with some basic humility. I believe that the starting point of faith is some doubt -- not being so full of yourself and so confident that you are right...

Yeah - That absurd posting has me shaking my head as well Gondi.

As the protests mount from Christians and even his own administration and political party:
White House walks back Obama comment suggesting Paris attack random
Published February 10, 2015 - AP
The White House clarified Tuesday that the terror attack last month on a Kosher market in Paris was in fact motivated by anti-Semitism, after President Obama drew criticism for suggesting it was random.
The president had addressed the Islamist terror attack, which coincided with the attack on the Charlie Hebdo office, in an interview with Vox.com.
Obama said he thinks the media sometimes overstate the terrorist threat, because, “if it bleeds, it leads.” He also said it is legitimate for Americans to be deeply concerned “when you’ve got a bunch of violent, vicious zealots who behead people or randomly shoot a bunch of folks in a deli in Paris.”
While Obama took heat for faulting the media, he also raised eyebrows for suggesting the Kosher market attack was random.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest was peppered with questions at Tuesday’s briefing, and claimed Obama was only referring to individuals who randomly happened to be at the market that day.
Shortly afterward, though, both he and his State Department counterpart gave a more direct response.
“Our view has not changed. Terror attack at Paris Kosher market was motivated by anti-Semitism. POTUS didn't intend to suggest otherwise,” Earnest tweeted.
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki tweeted: “We have always been clear that the attack on the kosher grocery store was an anti-semitic attack that took the lives of innocent people.”
The clarification comes after the administration was hit for the “randomly” comment on social media.
Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., slammed the president for the suggestion.
"The absurdity of this logic is apparent when extended to a hypothetical attack at a synagogue, or a church, or an American embassy," Moran said Tuesday. "Are we really to accept this idea: that the chance of diversity among visitors to a place somehow disqualifies the possibility that members of the group who predominantly frequent that place might be targeted?"

and totally confident you are right.
And not care if you are wrong cause someone always is ..... and i have had my share of turns but history is history.

Obama’s habit of playing fast and loose with history and the facts is coming back to haunt him.
After his own Secretary’s of Defense Gates and Pennetta books detailing obama’s inexperience and management failures, his senior political advisor Axelrod publishes his.
David Axelrod confirms obama lied:
Obama’s Gay Marriage Lie Was a Lie About His Faith, Too
by Joel B. Pollak10 Feb 2015323
Barack Obama lied about his opposition to gay marriage, according to David Axelrod’s new memoir. The revelation is reported by Time magazine’s Zeke Miller as: “Axelrod: Obama Misled Nation When He Opposed Gay Marriage In 2008.” But that headline could just as easily have read: “Obama Misled Nation About His Faith,” since Obama claimed his opposition to gay marriage was based on his religious views.
In 2004, he said: “What I believe, in my faith, is that a man and a woman, when they get married, are performing something before God, and it’s not simply the two persons who are meeting.” He repeated that claim during the 2008 presidential campaign and beyond, citing his understanding of “traditional definitions of marriage.” Those assurances came after Obama had initially backed gay marriage in 1996.
For example, during the Saddleback Forum in August 2008, where Obama and Republican rival Sen. John McCain appeared separately to answer questions from Pastor Rick Warren about their faith and political beliefs, Obama declared: “I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian–for me–for me as a Christian, it is also a sacred union. God’s in the mix.”
“Obama Misled Nation” is almost a perennial headline–it applies to nearly everything the president does. Yet it is important to be clear about the nature of this particular lie.
Obama did not just pretend to oppose a controversial position. He pretended to hold that view as a matter of his Christian faith.
He lied about his most sincere religious convictions–and much of his senior staff lied along with him.
.

Obama is such a sad, pathetic basket case at this point. I really don't even want to talk
about the guy any more. Really, it's about to that point. I think he needs professional help
and I mean that seriously.

Christian Group In Texas Shows What Hatred Looks Like
By Chrysler Summer, Mon, February 02, 2015
Sometimes racism can be so ugly and sad to see that you are just speechless. This is almost one of those times.
In Austin, Texas, last week, the Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islam Relations (CAIR) held a celebration and rally on the state capitol grounds during what was billed as Texas Muslim Capitol Day. The group on hand was largely made up of Muslim students and children, there peacefully celebrating and learning about the political process in the state.
Basic stuff right?
Well, that was too much for one group of Christian protesters who felt the Islamic group had no right to be there and was somehow trampling on their American and Christian rights. The anti-Muslim group calls itself the Patriotic Defense Foundation and claimed they were on hand because CAIR was really there to create a climate in which it could “take over America.”
The group disrupted CAIR’s peaceful rally, which included the kids singing American patriotic songs with such shouts as “No Sharia” and “Go home” while carrying signs that read “Radical Islam is The New Nazi,” “Go Home & Take Obama With You,” and this lovely one, “I serve a risen savior, Jesus Christ. Muhammad is dead.”
One woman went so far as to grab a microphone away from a Muslim speaker and shout, “I proclaim the name of the Lord Jesus Christ over the capitol of Texas. I stand against Islam and the false prophet.” Protesters then loudly recited the Lord’s Prayer over the Muslim students there trying to carry on their celebration and do their best to ignore these very unkind protestors.
The Patriotic Defense Foundation posted on their Facebook page their intent to rally against these American Muslims who dared to celebrate their freedom of religion openly. One member wrote this on the page prior to the event:
“We hope to speak to event organizers, attendees, media, locals etc and find out what they are doing and why they continue to infiltrate our country instead of assimilating. We hope to join many there to stand shoulder to shoulder in support of America against islam.”
“Infiltrate our country instead of assimilating.” And by that she clearly means give up their religion and become Christian.
I always find it interesting that people and groups like this behave the way they do and think they are sending a positive message about their own religion. The irony in this situation is that the Muslims there for their celebration were doing a much better job of representing what is right about our values and what we all believe religion should do for people than those ugly protesters who were making it very clear what they had in their hearts was nothing more than hate and ignorance.
Here is the video of the rally and the protestors so you can see for yourself what hatred looks like.

And you're a liar.

Radical any religion or creed creates problems. Skinheads have their own creed, as do the Klan, as does Rev. Al Sharpton who seeks a transfer of power from whites to blacks, as do the Occupy Wall Street kids who want socialist governance (resource based economy from a country that has a capitalist system). I still say that all religions have deviated from the path of guidance they were given and need to go back before their faiths were changed by churches and state leaders to evolve into what they are today. There was and is one God and he is the God of all people. Until people in Texas and elsewhere realize that, of course they will feel threatened by a religion other than their own, and not without reason and modern day examples of why they feel that way. For a group to say convert or die is forcing something on other people. To do that to people in a nation founded because of religious persecution brings only one response, you fight us, we fight you.
There is no understanding, there is just fighting and eventually private militias who fill in the gaps of perceived potential security breeches in the land. Can't trust your govt. to protect you, build your own mini govt. via a militia. That's what can happen.
Al Qaida was molded around Abdullah Azzam's philosophy, "there is no dialogue, there is jihad and there is your rifle" no need to discuss anything, get up and defend yourself and your religion. Defending your religion is your duty, it is required of you.
It is people's beliefs that will lead to revolutions and armed conflicts. Texans are very proud people, they didn't put up with the Mexican incursion and will not put up with any incursion into their way of life. When the anti-Christ wants their oath of allegiance, then you will see the depth of their rage and dissent, nobody's going to rule them.

So you have no issue at all with the actions taken by that Christian group in Texas?

What the heck are you talking about???? Honestly, it is like you are living in an alternate universe sometime.
No he is correct. It's the Obama supporters who live in an alternate universe where nothing Obama says or does has any impact or bearing on anything.
LOL. The biggest impact of his words is on the Obama haters who hang on his ever word looking for something that they can take and twist into some alternate meaning to support their constant drum beat of hate against Obama.

They openly hate Jews and Christians.
Firstly, The Council on American Islamic Relations is not a Hamas front group.
Secondly, nobody should talk to the FBI without an attorney present, advising people not to talk to them is not something unique to Hamas. If the FBI wants to talk to you, call a criminal attorney and do not answer questions unless they are present. This one is reported to be knowledgeable and provide good representation, but there many that know how to defend you. (pick a lawyer who represents a Gitmo client, they most certainly know about things in the world today and how some people are set up by crooked officials). If you cannot find one in your area, seek a Constitutional Law attorney, they are smart, passionate about protecting your rights.
Thirdly, the situation in Palestine has been so severe for so long, I can not even read the news of what goes on there much anymore. The modern day regime in Israel is not following the guidance given to them in their Torah or the atrocities against the Palestinian people would not be happening. It is therefore understandable why they hate the Jews that are oppressing them, taking their land, forcing them out of their houses and taking them, and the Christians (the US) supports financially and militarily this group of people. You have to look at both sides and see what both sides are doing, not just the one sided view that the press here shows you (usually of a retaliation attack by the Palestinians) - they will show you the Palestinians attack and say look they are terrorists, they won't show you what Israel did which provoked the attack.
I'll give you a couple of my news resources from Palestine, to help you see from their point of view. I hope it helps.

Unless of course you are a terrorist. There were Arabs in Afghanistan who were peacefully living on the land they defended from the Soviets in the 1980's. US forces came and paid locals $500 for the locations of each and any Arab they could point out and direct them to. These Arabs were then taken to Gitmo, tortured, many of them cleared of any wrong doing by the tribunals and there they sit, because of being Arabs they were accused of being terrorists, yet they were not part of 2001 Al Qaida, they weren't doing anything but living in a land they defended more than 20 years ago. The FBI was there with CIA interrogator teams at Gitmo during questioning. You would say they are terrorists because they were accused even though they did nothing. That is why we have attorneys, so that innocent people have more than a snowball's chance in hell.

People just don't want to hear about times in history that put their beliefs in a bad light. Christians do not want to hear about about the Crusades or what the Nazis did to the Jewish people, it makes them look like marauders and terrorists. And no American wants to hear about the Indians we slaughtered during our colonization of America. It makes us seem like cut-throat barbarians.

I was not aware of them being named in a federal case. (but I also think there are good and bad in all religions. Terry Jones that pastor in Florida who wanted to burn Qurans is an example of a bad Christian, as was Timothy McVeigh. Any religion that has no tolerance for the others is denying free will of people and that was never God's plan for anybody).

Sounds like you are talking out both sides of your mouth here.
In any case, I posted the article as an example of Christian hate mongering because it seemed like some folks here thought that hasn't happened since the Crusades or since the 60s. I guess should have known that it was the fault of those dirty Muslims.

Christians bad. Muslims good.
Sarcasm noted. So, am I wrong in reading this as you supporting the opposite of this statement? I have noticed your tendency towards polarizing the debate against Muslims, and in favor of Christianity.
The whole point of this thread wasn't good vs. bad, it was that, in the final analysis, Christians and Muslims are quite similar in their beliefs and motives. This has been restated and supported here by several posters, and is quite clear in Obama's speech. There wasn't any scolding, it sounded objective and balanced to me.
A minority of extremists on either side do not define the whole faith.
