Well folks the new release of old tapes is now out and available for listening on Youtube. While I am glad to hear that some of Richard Wright's work is being released posthumously I will not be purchasing this album/CD. In my opinion it is great music to fall to sleep to - literally. It is soothing and relaxing and might help you pass out. My wife described it as the background music she hears in high-end boutiques in tourist resorts. I hope I haven't offended too many folks here (after all I am Canadian)...I just want to open the discussion here in the Whipping Post section.

It is pretty mellow and a lot of the songs just blend into the next one...... but there is still that searing guitar from Gilmore to wake you up once in a while............... Grin

Knowing full well what to expect going in, I like it a lot and have listened to it several times. A fitting epitaph in many ways.

More than anyone I know, Floyd and Gilmour have a way of sounding relaxed and even sleepy on recorded releases, and then startlingly epic live.

Wish You Were Here was a great release, but live is was far more intense and dramatic. Animals isn't usually considered their best, but live, it was aggressive and Gilmour's guitar cut like a laser through the set. Even On An Island - the sleepiest of all - had tracks that sprung to life with amazing richness when I heard them live.

So I listen to Endless River, and every time Gilmour steps out even just a little, my mind can project to just how amazing he would sound live. More than any guitarist I know, he has an epic quality that creates a vast difference between his recorded and live work. I just wish he would tour again and remind us all how it should really sound, how he hears it. The genuine article is truly amazing.

For once I agree with Fuji - saw his On an Island tour - there were only a few shows and my brother and I were able to get tickets for the Rosemont Theatre - a pretty small venue. Echoes was worth the price of admission, with the green lasers moving to the music - I have always loved that song. Like I said above - his guitar just sears thru the music at points. That was a fantastic show.

Pink Floyd is one of those 'how will they do this live' type of band for me - and they never disappointed.

I got to see them do The Wall in New York.....an amazing weekend/experience. The first time I saw them was the Animals/Wish You Were Here Tour at Soldier Field. I saw them and Roger Waters solo a few times - including The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking with Clapton.

I don't remember ever having a bad time.......... Grin

An NPR interview with David about this release...

http://www.npr.org/blogs/world-cafe/2014/11/26/366635478/david-gilmour-on-world-cafe

The interviewer verges on incompetent, but David is interesting as always.

Most exciting, he mentions another solo album next year and possible tour, though how much Floyd he might include in the set remains uncertain. I've heard him quoted that without Rick, it's not possible to do Floyd tunes any more (which he also says in this interview).

But even with that, the possibility of seeing him again has me excited. Just a few weeks ago I said to a buddy that if he ever tours again we need to make our own little rock & roll haij to the Albert Hall and see him over there. A few days in Scotland, touring single malt distillers, would be a nice addition to the trip.
