While Jazz Fest may bring in big name acts and people from all over the country, it is really a time for the locals to shine. With so many rad musicians in the Crescent City it’s a safe bet that they invented the sit-in as well as the supergroup. NOLA’s latest and dare we say greatest supergroup is Raw Oyster Cult, consisting of members from legendary New Orleans bands The Radiators, Papa Grows Funk, and Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes. The band put on a hell of a show on Day 5 at Jazz Fest.
Radiators frontman and guitarist Dave Malone formed Raw Oyster Cult. The Radiators broke up in 2011 after more than 30 years and Malone wanted a vehicle to perform beloved tunes from The Radiators catalogue but in a new and fresh way. ROC busted out some of those Radiator’s songs—“Long Hard Journey,†Last Getaway,†and “Wild & Freeâ€â€”during their afternoon Jazz Fest set and even welcomed bassist Reggie Scanlon onstage for a Radiators reunion, much to the joy of locals and out-of-towners alike.
