Looks like the Republican Party is doing just fine these days.

Based on what? Mid terms, losing control in the House? Presidential approval rating?

Mitch McConnell still rules Congress with an iron claw. The issue-based conservatives are holding their noses just enough to make sure that they are getting the judges they want to the SCOTUS but also into the Federal system. They have a leader who has polarized and strengthened the support within the base to unforeseen levels, and they constantly defer to his leadership on their morals and issues.

We are deep into the post-truth era. There used to be things that a majority of the majority would agree were right or wrong, and these agreements transcended political views. This is clearly no longer the case. Over the last fifty some-odd years, the foundation of polarization has been built not on what people believe, but how people live their lives. Based on that, the rationalizations become very easy to make.

It's an amazing time to be a politician in a political party. If you know how to work the game, you can do anything, because no matter what you do, you know that your base will never hate you more than they hate the other side. On that note, hell, it's an amazing time to be a political party, period.

Look at this thread. Donald Trump started tweeting about John McCain last weekend completely out of nowhere. Some people came to talk about it, and one of the contributors would rather weave a rationalization web that would make Charlotte proud just because he cannot bring himself to agree with a liberal that a President using a platform to tell millions of people how much a President hates a dead guy is a really sh-tty thing for a President to do.

This would be a great spot for me to inject a whataboutism example, or one of those clever "If Obama or Hillary had tweeted..." hypotheticals, but those are part of the game too. In politics, things are no longer about right and wrong, because you can add each event to a continual stream of events that completely void the virtue of any individual instance. We are thousands of miles away from being able to say, "Hey, y'know, Mr. President, that's a really sh-tty thing to say and it's beneath you and beneath the office," and the vast majority agree. That's no longer the case because these kinds of things do not stand alone.

There is simply no inference of "This. This alone. Not talking about any other issue or instance or tweet or speech. I voted for you Mr. President and I will probably vote for you again, but, this time, you are wrong and that was a terrible thing to say."

If you are a political party and you know that you have millions of people that won't even say that, well, then, yeah. I'd say the Republican party is doing just fine these days.

I don't know why Trump says negative things about McCain.

Yes you do, Gina. You just don't want to admit it. 😉

I don't know why Trump says negative things about McCain. He had differing opinions on issues but I voted for him because of his beliefs on foreign policy. He did not want to get us involved in wars unnecessarily or go anyplace in a show of force. His approach was quietly and clandestine to limit civilian casualties. He was a prisoner of war and his time as a prisoner gave him time to reflect on war in ways others who have not been in that position can understand. He was quiet, soft spoken and very smart. He should be allowed to rest in peace, his tasks were completed here on earth.

Trump says negative things because he is a negative person on many fronts. He's always looking for a fight to pick with whomever he can go after. He is very jealous of all the respect and admiration people give to JM.

You are right, "He was quiet, soft spoken and very smart. He should be allowed to rest in peace, his tasks were completed here on earth." Unfortunately Trump, the guy you admire disagrees with you and continues to pick fights with a man in heaven. Trump is a disgusting human being who lacks basic decency.

Remember when Trump went after a Gold Star Father & Mother. Very classy.

I think George Will said it best when he described Trump as "Pathologically Insecure."

It explains a great deal about Trump's personality, behavior, and need to create the appearance that he's equal or better than, well, pretty much everyone on planet earth in all manner of existence.

Whether the world's greatest business man, negotiator, patriot, economist, military strategist, etc. etc....

Very ironic to see George Will now as a commentator on MSNBC. He no longer is a good fit FOX. Think about that.

Great tweets this week by George Conway delving into Trump & Trump's behavior. And of course Trump's rebuttals are loaded with get this...lies. No surprise there.

Add in a large heaping helping of cognitive dissonance amongst the supporters and you've got a winning recipe!

Donald Trump was a pop culture icon for 30 years before becoming President. Everyone knew who he was and is and if anyone doesn't, then one can read the thousands of statements and interviews and books with the hundreds of people who have worked with him and for him...those folks have been more than willing to tell everyone what kind of person he is, and they have.

I’m confident this whole scenario ends up badly for Republicans. Let’s assume Trump wins in 2020, which I believe will happen. He’ll be gone in 2024. Assuming the post-truth era exists in 2024, we’ll see Democrats campaigning for the anti-Trump, to restore class, dignity, and honor to the White House, mirroring Obama’s strategy. What will be the Republican strategy? What CAN it be? Democrat voters will be highly motivated, but what could there be for Republicans? If it took some extreme demogogue (the likes of which we’ll never see again) to inspire them, then what will they have to hang their hat on? Sean Hannity? There isn’t anyone as “strong” as Trump to inspire mass amounts of new voters hat helped Trump win. They got their quick fix to deal with Obama. They injected themselves with the strongest and purest heroin on the market in 2016, but in 2024 the dealers will only have baking powder to offer them.

Anyone they nominate will get 60 million votes. The who is not as important as long as they are not a Democrat or a liberal. That's all that matters.

I agree with about 99% of your posts, but I want to believe that the midterms are an indicator of things to come in the upcoming prez election. The mids were a referendum on Trump, and he was rejected in big numbers. He pretty much put himself on the ballot in his campaign efforts on behalf of GOP candidates. His own words reflected this. This upcoming election will be a repudiation & reaction to Trump & Russian interference.

The mid-terms are rarely a good indication of the next presidential election. The Democrats lost big in the midterms 2 years after Obama was elected, and Obama still won reelection. Now Trump’s approval rating might be a bigger indication. Reagan had a worse approval rating than Trump has now after his first 2 years, and he won reelection in a landslide. But here is the thing. Trump has NEVER had an approval rating over 50% despite a good economy. That would suggest Trump has an uphill fight. However, as we now know it doesn't matter what the majority of Americans think about Trump, it only matters what voters in the purple states think. 70% of Americans can despise Trump, but if 50% plus 1 vote in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Wisconsin vote for Trump, he gets another 4 years.

If I was betting, I'd take my chance that the electoral college states that were marginally won by Trump won't repeat this time for him. I still think that enough of the independent voters in combo with large turnouts of voters across the country will show a rejection of Trump.

I would like to think so, but never put it past the Democrats to figure out a way to blow an election. And besides, Putin put a lot of time and effort getting Trump elected, and Putin usually gets what Putin wants.

There are plenty more waiting in the wings, they are created by the masses.

He sure does. He did an amazing job getting the Sanders voters to stay away from the polls in the general election by hacking the DNC, thus keeping those voters from voting for Hillary.
