It's Rolling Stone. Should we be surprised...

Having a daughter who is a sophomore in college' I have to say that feminism and women's equality is woefully missing in the attitudes of her and her friends. More like Archie Bunker than Gloria Steinem for sure. It's scary when I hear her friends talk. I think the first step re: Campus Rape; etc is to mandate that the real police force be involved with any incident that if proven would be a felony. Campus security is more akin to Barney Fife than it is to Elliot Ness for sure. Kind of similar to letting Beacon Security handle OD's and rapes. There is such a conflict of interest in letting Colleges handle "crimes" whose adjudication smears their reputation.
I think you just cut right to the heart of what the RS piece was about: Colleges sweeping everything under the table in order not to "smear their reputation." This theme came up over and over again in the article. Truth is, young girls are being sacrificed in order to keep up appearances, and that is appalling. Whatever errors they made, I applaud RS for bringing that to light.

Unfortunately like a mistrial everything in the article - even true things - gets discredited. Personally I think LOWERING the drinking age to 18 would help some. When parties got driven off campus/underground I think the sexual abuse rate as well as OD rates skyrocketed. Kids are afraid to call the cops for fear of an MUI (minor under the influence.) They all party anyway; but when you passed out on campus 30 years ago you got help.
Today in the local LI Newspaper (Newsday) they announced the All-Island teams for sports. Everything was give equal space; except for Football which had the center full page spread with color photos of each player. So this indoctrination starts before college; was it Tile 9 or 10 that was fought for for years? I used to coach girls softball for a decade. It always amazed me how some coaches would boast about how many BJ's their sons were getting - while they expected their 12 year old daughters (who were 10 feet away) to remain angels forever. Double standard is rampant.
Prior to social media if you weren't invited to a party you didn't know. Now you read about it all the time. My older daughter had an f-u attitude to all this stuff. My little one (who has a good head on her shoulders) is a bit more prey to the pecking order. I worry at times. But this is nothing new - just further out of hand. I remember people shooting grain alcohol into watermelons because it was strong/tasteless/and "the girls wouldn't notice it." Unfortunately there are too many Bill Cosby's out there who are near necrophiliacs.

Rolling Stone must hire graduates of Al Sharpton’s School of Journalism.

This fiasco falls on the editing dept 100%.

As pro Rolling Stone as I've been in this thread............I feel they deserve to get what's coming to them. You don't make a charge as serious as rape without diligent investigation.

The same here. And there is a lot of concern in the press that students with legitimate assault stories will be hesitant to report them now

I heard no one got fired or suspended for this debacle. If thats the case, Rolling stone should stick to articles about Jimi Hendrix penis or groupie accounts of tourning with limp biskit and leave the real investigative journalism to other outlets.

Nobody gets fired anywhere for not doing their job anymore; just for not being PC

actually it has nothing to do with rolling stone, the biatch lied.
Oh please… if Rolling Stone had acted responsibly (more like basic common sense), this story would have never gone to press.
people make mistakes, are you not human?
Are you serious? A major magazine prints an entirely fabricated story that accuses unnamed but discernbile individuals of a major felony and you say "Well people make mistakes." Is that the standards we are reduced to? I fear for the future.
Let's be realistic, Rolling Stone did not purposely publish the story knowing is was inaccurate. Not verifying the sources was their only crime so lets not be too high drama on this.
What they did was inexcusable, so I am not defending their practices, but let's be honest Doug if this had been a conservative news source you would not be as outraged and we would not have heard a peep out of you on the issue. 😉
Nonsense.

StratDal: I do not mean to disparage your remarks in any way. Rolling Stone made some serious errors. However, I would offer this up: Was a discussion about rape on college campuses occurring before the RS article? I do NOT believe it was. Now that discussion is happening all over the country, here on this website, on CNN. Say what you will about RS, but I say that's pretty damn important.
By any means huh? For some of us truth in and of itself is the most important value.

Even those topics would be a reach for RS.

Here we go............the Rolling Stone detractors are in high HEAVEN now. And by the way, I agree with Doug, the woman who wrote the UVA rape article ought to be fired.
That said, Rolling Stone has been doing great investigative journalism for a lot of years. I've said it quite a few times, but I seriously doubt that any of the detractors here have bothered to read articles like their expose on rape in the military a few years back. Or how about Matt Taibbi's many exposes on the Wall Street shenanigans leading to the American financial crisis of 2007, and later the lack of equitable punishment by our Department of Justice.
RS screwed up this time, someone ought to be punished severely for it. Go ahead, RS haters, wave your "Ha-Ha" flag.

Maybe not "high HEAVEN", just regular heaven... If you like RS rob, knock yourself out. For me, I'd rather spend my time reading something else worthwhile... like the Whipping Post forum! 😛
PS I think I'll give Sabbath's HEAVEN and Hell a spin when I get home!!

Gee, thanks. I didn't know there was an actual Ha-Ha flag.
As far as RS goes, this was shoddy journalism through and through. I've also read the article. The fact that they didn't fact-check such serious accusations and let a specific fraternity be named is below Weekly World News levels!
I'm reminded of the Duke case a couple of years ago. Again, falsehoods get in the way of dealing with a real and present problem. I have a daughter in college, and this is a concern for me. Every time a false or poorly investigated charge occurs, it bolsters the fraudulent position that rape on campus "isn't that bad" or is "mostly made-up charges from girls who regret a one-nighter".

I saw this article this morning and it reminded me of this thread.

I saw this article this morning and it reminded me of this thread.
"A separate suit brought by individual members of Phi Kappa Psi was dismissed."
If I was named in an article as someone who participated in a gang rape and beating of a female, I'd file suit again and again, possibly getting together with the others and filing a class action suit of defamation of character for 10 times the cost of those magazines carrying the article sold for.
