'Top Republican hit' in multiple shooting
14 June 2017

A US Republican politician and aides have been shot during baseball practice in Virginia, US reports say.
Police in the upmarket Washington DC suburb of Alexandria said they were investigating a "multiple shooting" and a suspect was in custody.
Fox News said House of Representatives Majority Whip Steve Scalise and aides have been hit by gunfire.
Police tweeted they were "investigating multiple shooting 400 block E Monroe St. Suspect believed in custody."
An apparent eyewitness said on Twitter that gunfire rang out at the YMCA baseball fields, by the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park.

The witness, @ben_childers, said it happened at a congressional baseball team practice session.
Local media report there is a major police presence after the attack.
Senator Mike Lee, a Utah Republican, texted Fox News to say that Mr Scalise had been shot in the hip and would survive.
He said someone had used a belt as a tourniquet on him.
Mr Lee said the shooter had used a long gun and was dead.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer tweeted that President Donald Trump was being briefed.
"Both @POTUS & @VP are aware of the developing situation in Virginia. Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected," Mr Spicer tweeted.

Congressmen and women are not going to feel safe in public, they may not have felt totally safe before, they are targets, this is just going to further their fears. Lots of crazy people out there. Sad.

Should members of Congress be allowed to carry firearms for personal protection?

The only place they can't is walking around on Capitol Hill. However, they can keep one in their office. If they live in Virginia, they can get a concealed carry license.

OK. Wonder how many do carry.

I heard about them hiding in a dug out after shots began and before Capital police showed up, which in their words "they were sitting ducks" which made me think if somebody had a firearm in their bag atleast they would have an option of last resort if the shooter came upon them.

Unfortunately there's always something to make people reevaluate their safety and security.

One could make the observation that in a free society, everyone is a sitting duck most of the time.

This country is effed up if Congressmen, preparing for a charity event, are targeted. It is far beyond time that we come together and stop this stupid right-left hatred and fighting.

The gunman has died.

The shooter was identified as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson, of Illinois.
If you are interested in his motives take a look at his Facebook page.

His motivations were probably the same as Gabby Gifford's shooter - which is irrelevant at the end of the day. Both are losers who used politics as an excuse for their problems.

Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Jump To Conclusions About Mass Shooters’ Motivations

In these moments, like many others in journalism, it really helps to pump the brakes. Often, the shooter’s motivations are far from clear. Take Loughner. At Mother Jones, the liberal political magazine where I worked in 2011, we were more careful. Instead of jumping to conclusions, we reported out the story ― and found that Loughner’s politics were unclear at best. The Monday after the shooting, we published an exclusive interview with Bryce Tierney, a close friend of Loughner who may have been the last person to exchange messages with him before the shooting.

Loughner, Tierney said, had become obsessed with “lucid dreaming.” This is the idea that conscious dreams are an alternative reality that a person can “inhabit and control” and became “more interested in this world than our reality.” Loughner’s grudge against Giffords, Tierney said, originated not in any policy dispute but rather in her failure to correctly answer a question he claimed to have posed to her at a town hall: “What is government if words have no meaning?”

“It wasn’t like he was in a certain party or went to rallies … It’s not like he’d go on political rants,” Tierney added.

It was the first in a series of stories that changed the narrative about the Giffords shooting. “What the cacophony of facts do suggest is that Mr. Loughner is struggling with a profound mental illness (most likely paranoid schizophrenia, many psychiatrists say),” The New York Times would report a week after Mother Jones published the Tierney interview. Loughner was later formally diagnosed with exactly that condition. He wasn’t a political activist of any stripe. He was just another mentally disturbed person with a gun.

Unhinged leftie

Sometimes you can be a real ass, Goob. And, as you can't spell lefty, you are an uneducated ass.

Sanders issued a statement this morning, right after it happened, moron. I know keeping up on current events is beyond your capability, so maybe you should just shut before everyone thinks you are a moron. Never mind, that horse left the barn a long time ago.

politicizing the motives of the shooter shows a disregard to the victims, who deserve to be the subject of the story, not the crazed lunatic.

Yes, but even that is not enough. They need more security while they are working there. They should have dormitory style housing for them with appropriately trained security. They need a compound to live in while they are working, like an Army base. Secured. The Congressman who was shot today, with his high ranking status as a Majority Whip had security, and still look what happened.

They want to live wherever they want to some of them in Georgetown, it is not safe for them to be travelling without protection.

Today's incident could be passed off as one pissed off person acting inappropriately, but we all know the Deep State and Democrats will do anything to take down the govt.

Gina, honey

this took place in Alexandria, Virginia.

Every one of the people there had the legal right to carry a weapon. Actually i'm surprised none had one, given past statements supporting the 2nd amendment.

Now the second part of this is should we be providing higher and more security to every member of Congress and their families? Interesting question, and very expensive.

This x100. There is too much division in this country, and both sides are to blame. I partially blame the 24-hour cable "news" that are nothing more than political commentary, and political talk radio seems like everyone has to be more over the top and spread more hate than the next guy to get attention. It's really a shame that just about everything needs to be a partisan issue these days. It wasn't always like that.

But what can we do? We don't like it, we don't want it, we condemn it. How do we reverse the tide or are we just along for the ride? When compromise with the other side wasn't a sin, seems like the sun has set and we are into the long and difficult darkness. Find meaning and joy in your days, you don't know what awaits around the corner.

Democrarats need to dial down the rhetoric. Shakespeare in the park translated to kill DJT may give a leftie a woodie, but is dangerous and stupid and you end up with what we have here today.

Guns in the hands of the mentally ill............Republicans did this.

I suspect you are aware that the ACLU opposed the gun restrictions on 'mentally ill' - whatever that label means anyway...depending on your definition of mentally ill that may include 20-25% of the population.

Can we please stop with "republican this", "democrat that" finger pointing, where does it get us? Some of us aren't here for serious discussion, some of us are.

and you also know the same play in the same park also had Obama in the role of Ceasar and Bush and Clinton thru the years, because i know you are intelligent. so why is using Trump bad compared to the others? oh and also Trump donated money to this theatre

and also because i know you are intelligent you also know that the play is about how it is bad to kill leaders

Pops you are always one to get into democrat good republican bad game. I try to present different sides of arguments. I am saying that the ACLU was on the side of those republicans on that specific mental health gun issue. Things are often much broarer than the games we might play here for our own purposes. You ignore legitimate problems with that specific mental health gun issue. If you don't want to believe the republican side than listen to the aclu's position
