Fifth GOP debate

FactChecking the Fifth GOP Debate (FactCheck.org)
Summary
The Republican presidential candidates’ fifth debate focused on national security and included misleading claims on terrorism, immigration and foreign oil.
- Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush misconstrued the words of businessman Donald Trump in claiming that Trump said that “ISIS was not our fight” and that “ISIS was not a factor.”
- Sen. Ted Cruz wrongly claimed that the immigration bill Sen. Marco Rubio cosponsored in 2013 would have allowed the president to admit refugees without “any background checks whatsoever.” And Cruz claimed that the FBI director told Congress “they cannot vet [Syrian] refugees.” That’s not exactly what the director said.
- Sen. Rand Paul was wrong when he said that Rubio supported an “open border” policy.
- Rubio and Cruz disagreed over the impact of the USA Freedom Act, which amended government surveillance provisions of the Patriot Act. But their argument was mainly over which system of information collection each candidate favors.
- Sen. Lindsey Graham repeated the claim that the U.S. spends $350 billion “to buy oil from people who hate our guts.” Thirty-seven percent of those oil imports in 2014 came from Canada, with another 9 percent from Mexico.
- Former Sen. Rick Santorum was incorrect in claiming Muslim immigration to the U.S. has doubled since 9/11. Estimated legal immigration by Muslims has gone up that much from 1992 to 2012.
- Santorum also said “10 years ago I put the sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program.” He sponsored a bill that largely codified existing sanctions.
- Trump said the mother of the San Bernardino shooter had advance knowledge of her son’s plans, but officials have made no such charges or accusations.

Sounds like it was a pretty honest discussion as debates go.

I was only able to watch a half hour or so, but loved the faces and guffaws coming from The Donald every time someone said something about it (they liked to do split screens whenever another candidate mentioned Trump to show the other candidate as well as Trumps reactions at the same time).

watching grown men grovel for votes and make disparaging remarks about each other and hear them as they try to appear sincere and above it all is quite entertaining. I don't watch debates, I catch snippets here 'n' there, makes me laugh.

What I pulled from the bits I saw is that every single Republican Candidate wants full scale World War. I wonder how Americans will like this party once their sons and daughters start coming home limbless and psychologically broken, if they come home at all. Right now we have about 1% of the population in the military. Other than that Americans know nothing about our current war, the longest in history.
There is no sacrifice among the people. As a people we take our hats off at ballgames and stick bumper stickers on our cars saying "we support the troops". That's America's biggest lie. It sickens me. Maybe a full scale war is just what America needs to wake up.

Do they fact check Hillary Clinton? There aren't enough hours in the day.

What I take from Obama and the Democrats is that they are fine with Americans dying in Jihadist terror attacks as long as they can continue to not do anything consequential about it.

It's not about the factchecking. Someone intimated something less than flattering about any member of the right wing and Doug responded instinctively in defense.

Obla-di, obla-da, ladada, BARF
it looks to me like the GOP is hurting
he looked like the best one at 1st, but Jeb's is turning out to be like Teddy K's 1980 run -- one sibling too many -- not w/the 'mojo' of previous family members, even w/bottomless bank acc't>war chest
still hoping a Republican will make a late burst the media catches on to -- and then, to quote Alice Cooper, get "Elected" -- Obama has been great, now it's time to give the other team a chance -- been that way ever since that 1980 run -- Repub Reagan 2 terms, Dem Clinton 2 terms, Bush, Obama, same
PS, it's one of his best songs too 😮

How many debates have the Democrats had so far? Including the last one where they all got up there and rolled their eyes at every mention of 911 and sang a couple of stanzas of Kumbaya? I will not vote for anybody in the GOP field, but at least they're putting what they plan to offer out there on the sales rack. They're providing us with a lot of entertainment, too. 😉
And where is the coverage of third party candidates? C'mon, media!

What should be done?
Forget it Hawk! Those on the right are always quick to criticize Obama for his handling of this but will never say what they think should be done. They are afraid to say what they really think should be done mostly in fear of being lumped together with Trump. Hell, the GOP candidates last night couldn't agree on what should be done. They were all over the place with opposing ideas ranging from no fly zones to carpet bombing to killing terrorists families to sending in US boots. They also couldn't agree on whether Assaad should stay or go. They have no clue, especially that ultra moron Trump but they are quick to criticize Obama. So when someone complains about what Obama is doing they should be put to the exact question you asked Doug but don't hold your breath for any specific answers because they never give any.

More infuriating was the suggestions some of them had are already being done by Obama.
fiorinna still doesn't understand that the Sixth Fleet she wants to expand has had just that happen during Obama's term.
krispy kremes wants to shoot down Russian planes.
Yeah, WW3 is a great idea.
Wott a tough guy.

I couldn't bring myself to watch this.
I was afraid someone might give Sheldon Adelson a blowjob right there on live TV.
Didn't want to risk seeing that.

What I take from Obama and the Democrats is that they are fine with Americans dying in Jihadist terror attacks as long as they can continue to not do anything consequential about it.
What kind of miserable, disgusting, vile human being says this? Does the same putrid pile of crap actually believe "Obama and the Democrats" are "fine" with Americans dying?" I'm nauseated.

Do they fact check Hillary Clinton? There aren't enough hours in the day.
This is total BS.

Joke of the day
Jeb Bush for President.

Republican jokes often turn into nightmares for the country.
Jeb did slap Trump down a few times which was pretty funny

I think that they should fact check you. You make a ton of claims that have no basis in fact and then refuse to discuss them.

Yes they do. Here is how each of the candidates fare.
Hillary tells the truth 51% of the time. Pretty bad, but that is better than any of the Republican candidates did. Only three Republican candidates (Bush, Paul, Christie) told the truth over 40% of the time, and none of them were over 50%.

I loved krispy kremes christie saying he'd tell King Hussein of Jordan the US was his friend again.

There's plenty more...
WASHINGTON (AP) --
The vast complexities of a dangerous world were cast in too-simple terms in the latest Republican presidential debate.
In addition, Chris Christie pledged to make common cause with a Jordanian king who's actually dead and Rand Paul wrongly stated that all terrorist attacks in the U.S. since 2001 have come from the hands of legal immigrants.
Here's a look at some of the claims Tuesday night and how they compare with the facts:
TED CRUZ: "You would carpet bomb where ISIS is, not a city."
THE FACTS: The Texas senator's conviction that the Islamic State group can be routed with an air campaign of overwhelming force is hard to square with the reality on the ground. IS fighters are holed up in a variety of cities, amid civilians, raising questions about how he could direct a carpet bombing that only singles out the enemy.
He was asked in the debate if he'd be willing to cause civilian casualties in Raqqa, a major Syrian city that has become de facto capital of the Islamic State group's so-called caliphate. ISIS is also in control of the Iraqi city of Mosul.
---
DONALD TRUMP: "Our country is out of control. People are pouring through the southern border."
THE FACTS: Arrest statistics are widely regarded as the best measure, if an imperfect one, of the flow of people crossing illegally into the U.S. And Trump's suggestion that illegal immigration is increasing at the border is not supported by arrest statistics discussed in recent months by Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.
Johnson has said that during the 2015 budget year that ended in September, about 330,000 people were caught crossing the Mexican border illegally, a near 40-year low in border arrests. During the 2014 budget year, roughly 486,000 people were arrested.
In recent months there has been a spike in the arrests at the border, but primarily of children traveling alone and families, mostly from Central America.
---
JEB BUSH: "We need to embed our forces, our troops, inside the Iraqi military."
THE FACTS: The U.S. is already doing that.
U.S. special forces are working side by side with Iraqi forces in the fight against Islamic State militants and American military advisers and trainers are working with Iraqi troops in various locations. To be sure, Bush has called for an intensification of the military effort in a variety of ways, but debate viewers would not know from his comment that U.S. troops are already operating with Iraqi and Kurdish forces.
His comment fits a pattern in the Republican race as a number of candidates criticize President Barack Obama's course against IS while proposing largely the same steps that are already underway.
---
PAUL: "Every terrorist attack we've had since 9/11 has been legal immigration."
THE FACTS: Not so.
One of the San Bernardino, California, attackers was 28-year-old Syed Farook, who was born in Illinois. Nidal Hasan, who perpetrated the 2009 Fort Hood shootings that killed 13 people, was not only an American but an Army major.
---
CHRISTIE: "When I stand across from King Hussein of Jordan and I say to him, 'You have a friend again sir, who will stand with you to fight this fight,' he'll change his mind."
THE FACTS: He won't, because he died in 1999. Jordan's king now is Abdullah II.
---
CRUZ: "And even worse, President Obama and Hillary Clinton are proposing bringing tens of thousands of Syrian refugees to this country when the head of the FBI has told Congress they cannot vet those refugees."
THE FACTS: Cruz repeated inflated estimates of how many Syrian refugees the Obama administration plans to admit to the United States. Obama has announced plans to resettle about 10,000 refugees in the next year.
The vetting process for refugees takes, on average, about two years and is routinely longer for refugees from Syria and Iraq. The administration has said refugees being considered for resettlement in the United States are subject to additional scrutiny. The administration has declined to describe what the scrutiny involves, saying it is classified.
---
CARLY FIORINA, speaking of security threats to the U.S.: "We need the private sector's help because the government is not innovating, technology is running ahead by leaps and bounds...They must be engaged and they must be asked. I will ask them."
THE FACTS: They've been asked.
The Obama administration has been in discussions with technology companies, especially in Silicon Valley, over the last year about the use of encrypted communications and how the government can penetrate them for national security purposes. After the attack in San Bernardino, California, Obama again said he would urge high-tech and law enforcement leaders to make it harder for terrorists to use technology to escape justice.
That's not to say the effort has been effective. But as in the case of candidates talking about the campaign against IS, Fiorina pitches something that is in motion.
---
CRUZ: "We didn't monitor the Facebook page of the San Bernardino terrorist because DHS thought it would be inappropriate."
THE FACTS: The Department of Homeland Security has authority to look at social media such as Facebook when evaluating visa applications, and the agency says it does so in some cases. But some experts say that scrutinizing social media accounts of every visa applicant would dramatically slow the approval process, including for tourist visas.
It's also unclear whether looking at the Facebook pages of the shooters in the California attacks would have prevented the attacks.
The male attacker, Syed Farook, was a U.S. citizen, born in Illinois, and never needed a visa. His wife, attacker Tashfeen Malik, 29, did enter the country on a fiancee visa and had used social media to speak of martyrdom and jihad. But Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., has said such posts weren't public. After the attacks, Facebook did find a profile under an alias linked to Malik with a post pledging her allegiance to the Islamic State.
---
CRUZ: "Moderate rebels end up being jihadists."
THE FACTS: Cruz did not acknowledge in his blanket warning that moderate rebel groups in Syria have been fighting against the Islamic State group, the al-Qaida-aligned Nusra Front and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad since the start of that country's civil war.
While there has been concern over U.S.-trained Syrian rebels handing over some of their equipment to the Nusra Front in exchange for safe passage, they are considered key in the fight against both radical groups and Assad - a leader who a number of GOP candidates said in the debate should be removed because of his close alliance with Iraq.
---
MARCO RUBIO on facing terrorist threats: "We need more tools, not less tools. And that tool we lost, the metadata program, was a valuable tool that we no longer have at our disposal."
CRUZ: The USA Freedom Act passed by Congress ended the federal government's bulk collection of telephone metadata for all Americans, and "strengthened the tools of national security and law enforcement to go after terrorists."
THE FACTS: Both are right, but are emphasizing different aspects of the new law. While the government has lost speed and ability to reach back in time, it has gained volume of coverage.
The controversial NSA surveillance program revealed by leaker Edward Snowden had allowed the intelligence community to quickly analyze five years of calling records in search of connections among Americans and foreign terror suspects.
Under the new law, the government can no longer collect and store calling data. Instead, it has to request a search of data held by the phone companies, which typically hold the records for two years. It's unclear how quickly those searches can take place, but it's probably longer than in the previous system. Rubio is correct in this regard.
Cruz is correct that under the prior program, a large segment of mobile phone records went uncollected. Under the new regime, a larger universe of phone records can be searched.
What neither acknowledged is that the phone records program was not regarded inside NSA as an important tool in ferreting out terrorism plots. The only case the government has said was cracked because of the program over a decade was a relatively minor terrorist financing schem

I loved krispy kremes christie saying he'd tell King Hussein of Jordan the US was his friend again.

I didn't realize Hillary was on the stage last night. This was a GOP Debate, but no post can prevent an entrance for Doug from injecting negative, angry, and bitter attitude lobbed at & taking swipes at the Clintons. I'm guessing it makes him feel really good?

Just more dead Americans.
It is all good with the left as long as you don't call it "Jihadist terror attack" They call that "politically incorrect".

What I take from Obama and the Democrats is that they are fine with Americans dying in Jihadist terror attacks as long as they can continue to not do anything consequential about it.
C'mon Doug, we already have Muleman to post drivel like this (see above - do you really want him as a fan?). This site is in desperate need of an intelligent conservative voice - maintain the role.
As for the debate, why did some Republican candidates choose to mention Obama at all? Isn't he irrelevant at this point? They aren't running against Obama - they are running against each other for the nominee, but they kept pointing out all of Obama's mistakes. Why? How does that help them?
Best line of the night actually came from Fiorina...Trump actually screamed that we shouldn't spend any money at all on foreign countries and instead invest it in the crumbling American infrastructure, and Carly pointed "Wow, that's exactly what Obama has been saying for 8 years - I'm surprised to hear that from a Republican candidate." Hahaha, brilliant.

You know it's funny, someone asks that every time I post a factcheck.org link. The answer is the same every time...OF COURSE. They fact check all the candidates, debates, etc. and I've posted the link several times now.
Here is the one for Hillary, again: http://www.factcheck.org/person/hillary-clinton/
Here is the link to the fact checking od the last Dem debate, in case you missed it: http://www.factcheck.org/2015/11/factchecking-the-second-democratic-debate//blockquote >
It's not about the factchecking. Someone intimated something less than flattering about any member of the right wing and Doug responded instinctively in defense.
Maybe he feels marginalized.
No I just hate the odor of hypocrisy.

What I take from Obama and the Democrats is that they are fine with Americans dying in Jihadist terror attacks as long as they can continue to not do anything consequential about it.

There are inumerable answers given all over the place and they can be easily found. Some you may agree with some you may disagree with. But it is a lie to say no suggestions have been offered. As a starting point it's high time that Islam is removed from the protected list that prevents the FBI, the clandestine services and local police investigate suspicious individuals. As a second point we can elect a leader who actually admires Western civilization and its freedoms and hard fought for rights and is willing to speak publicly and on the world stage in favor of those rights (See e.g. Roosevelt, Franklin, Kennedy John F., Reagan, Ronald) Third we can begin to make hard and serious decisions about who belongs in this country not based on political correctness but on American security needs. 4th We can ask the Pentagon to come up with an actual strategy for dealing with the situation in the middle east and then act on it instead of doing absolutely nothing. 5th We can not bluster and make red lines and then forget about them when the enemy doesn't go along with it. 6th We can stop trying to reconcile with the leading proponent of world wide jihad on earth, the Islamic Republic of Iran.
These are just a few of the broader strategic things than I hope the next president, no matter who it is, will undertake.
