Coronavirus and Spring Break
I live in an island resort area. So far, we have been relatively clean from the coronavirus (several reported cases - and a false alarm or two). So far - so good.
Spring Break is typically a very welcomed opportunity for the hotels, restaurants, t-shirt emporiums and others. This time, it seems like an opportunity for visitors to come from all over the nation and world (and they do) bringing some extra and unwelcome baggage with them.
Like every other place - there has been talk of shutting down or minimizing the hours for restaurants and bars. Merchants are being reluctant! Some would apparently rather take chances than loose their goldmine.
Seems like it would be a good idea to cancel as much of Spring Break as possible. I think hotels should call customers with reservations and tell them that they are closing for the virus. Seems drastic, but necessary.
TV news clips show kids (college and high schoolers) being interviewed. I can remember the days of being 10 feet tall and bullet proof! These kids show no fear of the virus or even respect for others. "It's just the flu!", states one. "We've gotta live our lives", says another.

An Airplane is a mobile Petri dish.
When are the Airlines shutting down?

As soon as Donnie boy takes the initiative. Probably not a bad idea.
I saw the people on the beach in Clearwater they were being told patty's over.
Daytona, Ft. Lauderdale will lose a lot of money from the curtailing of the annual fling thing.
glad I'm not in heat any more, it must really be hard to get laid these days
Spring breakers grind and party on booze cruise despite coronavirus pandemic:
“If I get corona, I get corona,” Ohio resident Brady Sluder told Reuters. “At the end of the day, I’m not going to let it stop me from partying.”

I'll bet next stop partying is at Mar-a-Lago. Are you down with that goob?

... meanwhile, FISTFIGHTS breaking out over toilet paper. Local grocery store opens at 8:00 am this morning. Signs on shelves read LIMIT ONE PER CUSTOMER. Folks lined up out the door awaiting opening - pushing and shoving because folks "aren't distancing".
Governors in Florida and even Alabama calling for closure of bars and restaurant in resort areas ... but not in GEORGIA. So, we're being swarmed with young and (seemingly) healthy spring breakers who have no thoughts or consideration beyond their immediate desires.
And I am not siding with Trump in calling this, "Chinese Flu" - but this is at least the 2nd outbreak of highly infectious disease that can be traced back to Chinese ... exotic meat markets. Some guy over there develops a hankering for fried lizard (or whatever) and now the entire world is fearing death ... or worse - no toilet paper. Why hasn't the Chinese government abolished these unsanitary markets? Be sure and tell me how narrow minded I'm being.
I'm in south Florida and us locals here are not happy, everyone wants the beaches closed. Like you said, Rusty, if your town/municipality doesn't close the beach then everyone in the next town over is swarming yours. Our beaches and restaurants were still packed with people from all over. Glad Desantis finally closed them down, I imagine he was holding out for as long as he could since this time of year is a make or break time of year for the industry even without a pandemic.

I have been trying (in vain) to convince the local bars and restaurants that if they sacrifice spring break (close for a couple of weeks) that they might salvage the summer. I'd have better luck talking to a wall.
Six students five from University of Tampa test positive. One student travelled internationally.
But they enjoyed spring break.
They were on Daytona Beach.

They finally shut our beaches. Local merchants - especially restaurateurs and hoteliers are somewhat (and understandably) pi$$ed. This will most certainly wreak havoc on local and world economies. Interestingly enough, fear of the virus and opinions on how to handle it seem to be divided along political lines. Are republicans immune? Are democrats over-reacting? In a game of Russian Roulette, the odds are stacked overwhelmingly in ones favor. But who wants to play Russian Roulette?
