so Ron Delsener was on sirius recently talking about upcoming shows he's involved in, and one of them he mentioned was 5 nights of Widespread Panic at the Beacon

https://liveforlivemusic.com/news/ron-delsener-phish-msg-widespread-panic-beacon/

personally I think the time for Panic to do 5 nights in NYC has come & gone (they sold out 3 nights midweek in 2001) but if done right, it'd could certainly work for all. They did sell out 3 nights at the Capital in March this year, but the beacon is obviously a little bigger and a little pricier.

give the fanbase enough notice...get some guests and openers: warren, susan, derek, maybe trey...

any thoughts?

You think Derek and TTB can play 6 nights at the Beacon and Panic can't sell 5? They can. And they are not going to need these guys who already have their own Beacon or New York gigs to pull it off though obvioulsy any of those could guest depending on when that would be though they would not be announced beforehand.

I honestly did not realize WP was that popular. Good for them! Gotta love anything Jimmy Herring touches.

I bought the first CD by them when it came out a zillion years ago because T Lavitz was on it and it was on Capricorn Records. Things do change.

I'm not even that big of a WSP fan and they will do fine at the Beacon, it's not like it's MSG or a huge stadium.

I thought I heard a year or two back that WP was taking an extended hiatus or completely breaking up. Any word on that? I don't follow them closely so maybe the hiatus is over? I have seen them a few times and they are always very, very good, a musician's band for sure.

Same here. I thought they were done. Great band.

rumors of their break up were highly exaggerated

they do 20-30 shows a year, with Red Rocks, Milwaukee, and St Augustine being annual stops. The rest of the year gets filled in with festival and holiday stuff.

In new England & NY, it's been pretty dry though: pretty sure their 3 nights at the Cap in March of this year has been the only appearance in the 3 years of the reduced schedule.

despite what I would have guessed, the shows they play with long breaks between have been outstanding. maybe they rehearse more, maybe the monotony is gone, who knows. But each time they get back out there is worth a listen.

They play three nights next month in Milwaukee, followed by three nights in New Orleans. Four nights in Mexico in January as well.

Jimmy Herring was obviously able to work this into his tour of small venues in there as I assume he will make the Panic shows.

"a musician's band for sure."

Eh, are they really? When I think of a "musician's band" I think of Mahavishnu Orchestra, King Crimson, Rush, Aquarium Rescue Unit. Bands that play really difficult, complex music that fellow musicians appreciate because they know how hard it is to play.

There are some good musicians in Panic, don't get me wrong. Herring and Schools are elite for sure, and Duane Trucks has done wonders for them. But the actual music they play is not that complicated, nor are most Panic fans there to study the intricate details of the musicianship. They are there to party and have a good time.

Which is totally fine, and I like Panic a lot more than the above comments would suggest. My brother and I are going to catch them at the Fox on 12/29, and I am sure it will be fun and a good time will be had by all. Good for them that they hooked up a 5 night run at the Beacon, they could probably play the entire run with no repeats if they wanted. They certainly have a deep enough catalog to mix it up a lot over 5 shows.

Again, don't mean to be too negative about the "musician's band" thing. I just had to disagree, because after all, this is the Internet.
