Who's going to Derek tonight?

AC / DC is a great band to see if you want a singularly focused sound.
The Derek Trucks Band was always all over the place, and I mean that in a good way. They made me think of Traffic: wildly eclectic.
TTB are too. Anything can happen. The next song might go in any direction. Wild stuff! The sense of energy and anticipation is palpable at their shows.
To walk out during a Derek Trucks show is to assume that Derek will not play any worthwhile guitar for the rest of the night. That seems like an unwise assumption.

As Derek himself would surely say, this band is not just about Derek Trucks. 😉 😉 😉
The sure bet of the extra sleep I got by leaving early and catching an earlier train was absolutely worth the risk that a band having a less than spectacular night was gonna turn in a drop-dead performance after I left.

The only show I've ever walked out on was when Johnny Winter opened at the Coliseum for April Wine.... I watched Johnny and then left!
I'm not spoiled with Derek shows here in Canada.... I've seen him once in the last five years and would never think of leaving seeing a master such as him play live.

I get that some don't like the band and think they are less then the sum of it's parts
we can agree to disagree, personal taste, etc.
I don't understand "not a band with a mission"
they change styles / genres a bit, ie, rock, blues, jazz with some Eastern influences in Derek's playing.
Underlying all of that is the feeling of Staxx / Muscle Shoals era music that ties it together.
I would be bored if it was all uniform
ymmv

As the one that made both those comments I think we are merely discussing semantics. Sum less than the parts I guess means that their "mission" somehow bypasses me.

Saw TTB at Sunshine Fest last year 2 nights in a row & something we found very disappointing & embarrassing was the fact the place started emptying out While TTB were still playing about 1/2 way thru their set.A large portion of the front vip seats became vacant. We went to both cities & thats not to say there weren't still lots of people enjoying their show, but I think it was mostly the cheaper seats, not upfront. I found it kind of rude despite how people felt about the band,I'm not sure their reasoning,Maybe it was just a Boca Ratan & St Pete Florida crowd thing. We did decide that that crowd was not really our thing & didn't return this year despite having gone 3 years now since Sunshine started.Their 1st year was prob the best with Fort Myers being a 3rd city.
We'll probably catch TTB again in a smaller venue with a more intimate & respectful crowd.
