Who here saw Robert Johnson?

Old Coot

I saw him once,in some smokey bar down in Clarkesdale,Mississippi south of Memphis called "Big Reds".After the set some guy started a fight with him and they both disappeared into the night. Later on though, driving home I thought I saw some guy kinda looked like him hitchiking at the highway corner leaving town.

I saw 'im. Saw 'im on down to the crossroads...

One night in New Orleans this guy told me he get me into a Robert Johnson show. It wouldn't even cost me any money... all I had to do was sign a contract...

He's overrated....
No light show, no fog machine, pretty basic unplugged show...
😛
"Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?"

I know,he kept blowing fuses on his amps in the show I saw.He had his roadies running like crazy switching this guitar for that dobro for the Martin & mic adjustments. A bit difficult to deal with, may be why that fight broke out.
LMAO , good one . I did see David " Honeyboy " Edwards who was good friends with Johnson , this from Wikipedia . He performed with the famed blues musician Robert Johnson, with whom he developed a close friendship. Edwards was present on the night Johnson drank the poisoned whiskey that killed him , and his story has become the definitive version of Johnson's demise.

Robert Johnson lives across the street from me. He's an old white guy. I call him "Old Bob".

I took this at the now defunct Richards in Atlanta. RJ was opening for Howlin' Wolf

I have been to all three of his graves in MS.

Maybe Alpha can tell us about his drug dependency....

Saw him on the last three "Farewell" tours and he was the only original member left. Ralph Macchio was the opening act. Johnson promised to teach him his missing song if he opened. Never got the chance to do it.

I saw him last night with Duane & Jimi at the Roanoke in Othello, WA. They did an acoustic blues set and than brought Stevie Ray out and plugged 'em in. My friend played bass and his friend drove the drums. I paid everyone's bar tab.

I saw him open for Slayer when they were promoting the "Hell Awaits" album.
Sang's Grandma was a roadie for Slayer at that show, she ran the monitor board side stage.

He was ok, but his opener, dude named Leadbelly, was real good.

I saw him jam in the lounge of his cousin Howard's place.

I didn't get to see Robert Johnson, but I did meet his road partner and got to see one of his final performances, a great bluesman by the name of Johnny Shines. It was around the fall of 1988 or the winter of 1989, when I got to see Johnny Shines perform at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Shines traveled with Johnson back in the 1930s and completely mastered Johnson's style of playing the lead and rhythm parts at the same time. Johnny was quite an old guy by the time I saw him and a recent stroke made it difficult for him to play guitar, but his vocals seemed even more powerful and full of mojo power than on the records. A band of local blues guys backed Johnny up and did a great job. Meeting Johnny Shines after the show and thanking him is a moment I'll never forget. Johnny mastered Johnson's style better than anyone, just check this out:

I saw Rob at a funky Meters show in New Orleans in the early 2000's. Due to overselling the show, the police shut it down less than an hour in. I know Hiitin' the Note is now defunct, but I assume someone on this site must have seen Rob lately. If anyone talks to him, ask if he's going to Jazzfest. My wife and I are leaving Thursday, so maybe we can have a few beers with him and Tammy.

I ran around with him and his brother Kenneth back in Junior High. They were solid trouble. Wouldn't be surprised if they were deceased. 😮

I also snapped 3 pictures.Unfortunately 1 of his handlers snatched them away from me yelling "No pictures" in my ear! They were great in his purple fedore;playing his homemade dobro; & with that guys wife sitting on his lap during that song. Can't help thinking those pics could've been worth something today, maybe.Big Red,the club owner, said "get over it,those pics ain't never gonna amount to nothin"!

I met him on a corner once. It was late, around midnight. He asked me to tune his guitar.

True story here;a couple yrs ago we went down to Clarkesdale & this old guy in a bar at closing told us where the'actual' Crossroads was,not the tourist corner, which we sorta figured.Early Sunday am before leaving we drove down there to the'old hwys'.We were standing there taking a picture when out of nowhere this guy appeared dressed to the nines.(8 am Sunday morning) We asked if he just left church to which he laughed&laughed, said "No,I don't go to No church".We just looked at each other.Well we had a guitar we picked up at a pawnshop & we were taking a picture w/it,for fun there. This old black guy asks to see the guitar.Puzzled we handed it to him & he fiddles w/it for a bit & just hands it back.(This is an absolutely true story)"Nice",he says. Can you give me a ride down the road pointing,"I'd like to show you 2 something".To which we say'not sure we have room but we'll see" as we studied the back of the convertable car packed to the roof w/stuff we had bought. As we're discussing it we look back over & the guys Gone,Disappeared! We don't see him on the road & as fast as he appeared he was gone!
Yeah,we went down to the Crossroads alright, amazing place, the whole town.Lots of unforgetable memories for sure!
