Where Did The 60's Psychedelic Look Come From?

According to this video, the art on most of those 60's posters originated almost 100 years earlier.

A lot, not all, of the San Francisco posters were neo "Art Nouveau" turn of the century, commercial art, it was everywhere, in images, architecture, decor, fashion. Neat stuff.
JOB cigarette papers poster

Art Nouveau was fading fast in favor of Art Deco w/its cleaner sleeker lines, but the 1960s definitely brought it back into public consciousness.

Interesting stuff and I never knew any of it until my nephew sent me that youtube recently.

cool
I was in Spain recently - a lot of the "moderenisme" from the late 1800s and early 1900s for which Gaudi was famous is along the same line. I didn't put the 2 together until now
This building is an example.

I didn't put the everything - like doorknobs - can be beautiful in the YT as being the same as Gaudi, either. Barcelona is one of my favorite cities just because everywhere you look is something beautiful & imaginative (except the Gothic Quarter). I was fortunate to live there for 2 years.

Wow - this thread got me searching Art Nouveau, found an artist named Louis Theophile Hingre -
^ This one screams Sugar Magnolia, would make a great Dead poster

Way cool artwork, & the groovy Carnaby Street scene in London in the mid-late 1960s, w/its paisley designs & swirling patterns, might seem to be an embellishment of it

All of those are really stunning BrerRabbit. Thanks so much for embellishing this thread with the beautiful posters.

Cool thread - I was aware of the style influence but never really dug into Art Nouveau. It is unreal what comes up on image search "Art Nouveau"
