Watkins Glen

28th July 1973 :
The Watkins Glen outdoor summer jam was held outside of Watkins Glen, New York with The Allman Brothers, The Grateful Dead and The Band. Over 600,000 rock fans attended. Many historians claimed the event was the largest gathering of people in the history of the United States. 150,000 tickets were sold for $10 each, but for all the other people it was a free concert. The crowd was so huge that a large part of the audience was not able to see the stage.

Here's a nice recording of the Grateful Dead's set that includes the Mountain Jam. Interesting historical commentary about the recordings as well: https://archive.org/details/gd1973-07-28.sbd.weiner.181.shnf

Buddy of mine says he was on a family vacation in the area during this show. He would have been 11 or so. He recalls the mass quantity of people.

Watkins Glen was incredible. Remember it like it was yesterday, what I can remember of it. Actually found my way to this website on a search for a recording of the event.

😛 oh my is that time ...... Again
Yep I was there , but we arrived on Thursday so we
had our pick up front ... We were middle section more
towards Gregg ... I wanted to stay in middle area as I knew that
is where DB would be... I was equally excited to see The Band ...
I wasn't a GD fan ... Strange but true.
Went to sleep under the stars with plenty of room . The sunrise woke us early
to people strewn everywhere , we took turns using port a potties
N getting washed so we didn't lose our great spot. When your young
It's all about your spot lol.
Magical
But you have to do that sorta thing when your young.
