Couldn't be happier with the show last night. My only niggles were I wanted to hear the 3/4 "Soulshine" I've been hearing about, and I still can't understand folks who pay good money for shows only to gaze into their phones or talk incessantly. There were great moments of altered dynamics only to be practically drowned out by chatter. Would've loved to have heard "Angel Band" or "Comes a Time," but I was super happy with "Loser." Lordy, the band is not only good but entertaining as heck to watch.

Won't be able to recite the setlist. but we got a "Blue Maiden's Tale," which might be my favorite on the new album. We also got Garth's "Two of a Kind," which I never thought I'd hear Warren perform. I found it funny when he said they finally figured out a way to play it (funny since Warren co-wrote it). The highlight for me was during "Georgia on a Fast Train" when Warren pulled out all sorts of clean double-stops and faux pedal-steel licks. I have been a Warren fan since Pattern Disruptive, and I can honestly say I haven't enjoyed a show as much as last night since the the 1989-1992 days or the earliest days of Gov't Mule. I say that because just about every tune had something unexpected in it guitar-wise, which just wasn't the case after I've seen The Brothers and The Mule so many times.

Do catch them if they amble your way. I was pretty ambivalent about going up until on saw that Yahoo stream. So pleased I went. Wonderful show.

Peace.

Thanks for the review. This was with Railroad Earth, correct?

Great phrasing Blooby! "Altered dynamics." Spot on! I'm really glad to hear they played "Two of a Kind". That will probably inspire me to buy that Mule Tracks.

Hi Rob. Not Railroad Earth. Warren is now playing with the Ashes and Dust band that features Jeff Sipe on drums along with members of Chess Boxer and other Nashville players. Chess Boxer were recommended to Warren by Bela Fleck.

I should have mentioned that Chessboxer (sp?) opened with a brief set before Justin Townes Earl played. The CB set was great and covered a lot of ground musically. JTE was not my cup of tea except for a couple tunes although his guitarist/pedal steel accompanist was very tasty in spots, especially during a version of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams."

In addition to Chessboxer and Sipe, there was another side man who played mandolin, acoustic, and electric. Nice player, but if memory serves, he went minor key in "Blue Sky," which didn't work out for me personally. He did a nice, bluesy solo on mandolin on (I think) "Two of a Kind" and a few other nice spots. Mostly, he was there for support. Apologies for blanking on him. I will have to check out the Chessboxer EP, and the banjo and violin players apparently were in a band earlier called Cadillac Sky, which I will have to look into.

ChessBoxer's bass player is named Royal Masat and the additional musician is his brother Sterling. He has been there the whole tour.

Thanks for the info. His brother is a monster on bass. Talented family.

Anybody having difficulty with downloading at livedownloads.com? When I get to the point where I submit my payment, I get an error screen. Something about it can't form a secure connection.
