One of if not the best interviews with Warren I've ever heard

This guy must've got him good and relaxed because Warren was letting the F bombs fly 😀

I watched it. It's L O N G!! I wondered how Warren was in David Allen Coe's band in the early 1980's and we found out in this interview. I saw David Allen Coe in the late 1970's and he and the band plus most of the audience were hard core bikers.

Some of the songs were so racist and demeaning toward African Americans and some of the patches on some of the men's jackets displayed the N word. And some women had "Property Of" on the back of their jackets.

It certainly wasn't the love in, everyone is beautiful philosophy I had developed from my hippie years. I'm sure Warren didn't know what he was getting into and felt somewhat uncomfortable. Warren is clearly not part of that mind set.

Warren is a Phish fan but Gregg Allman cautioned Warren and Derek Trucks about bringing too much of a Phish sound into the ABB but Butch Trucks was critical of Warren and Derek for not taking any chances like the ABB did in the old days and take the music someplace new with no concern about a chain wreck. They must have been pushed from different directions.

But it was interesting and informative.

We all know Warren had one of his favorite guitars stolen in the early 90's. Right off the stage at an Allman Brothers show.

I read last night Heart had several instruments stolen just as they were to kick off another tour.

Included was Nancy Wilson's custom built purple inlay with custom painted headstock Telecaster and a Gibson Mandolin which the band has used on tour for 25 years!

This is akin to cattle rustling. If they catch 'um HANG 'UM!!!

I was around in those days.  I knew some of the cowboys and bikers that frequented the music of David Allen Coe.  I heard enough of it to see the qualities that you mention.  I don't mean to disparage Coe completely, but I always saw him as something of a novelty act.  When I first realized that Warren came to the ABB via David Allen Coe I did some rather serious head scratching.  I hope the money and the experience was good for Warren.

@rusty A friend bought one of David Allen's albums and I liked it so went with him to see David Allen Coe's show when it was in town and I was surprised at the lyrics of a few songs not on the album and the large number of hardcore bikers which is fine to be a biker but was uncomfortable with the N word on some patches on jackets. "God made Hondas to keep .......... off Harleys". Being a hippy from 1967 I had never seen that and heard songs like that before so and it made me uncomfortable.

It seemed Warren was uncomfortable with that band too and eventually left. It's like being a struggling actor and you get a decent part in a movie but it's complementary toward the Communist party. You take it but realize it's not your way of living.

David Allen Coe as Warren stated is indeed a good song writer. I remember one that was a huge hit on the country stations but apparently Steve Goodman wrote this one. It was a big hit.

@robertdee His cover of the Steve Goodman song (Goodman also wrote the Arlo Guthrie hit, City of New Orleans) was great.

I think several of his songs have merits.  I also understand writing from perspective - projecting onto and speaking through a character or third party (see Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits, "Money for Nothing").  Coe's songs that I've heard are certainly honest and gritty.  Having said that, as a lyricist David Allen Coe ain't no Bob Dylan! 😉

I've read interviews and stories - he spent a good bit of his life in prisons - and was friends with a lot of black people.  His use of certain language draws a red flag these days - but in 1980 songwriters, screenwriters and musicians had a lot more leeway.  The Rolling Stones recently dropped "Brown Sugar" from their concert repertoire.  I'm guessing "Some Girls" will never be played again either.  Signs of the times perhaps.

A friend back in the day had one (two?) "X-rated" albums of Coe.  Some of the song titles included, "I Could Make Linda Lovelace Gag".  That kind of stuff.  Not exactly radio friendly or the kind of stuff you might play at a mixed gathering!

Back to the Warren video - I haven't been able to sit through all of it but he does have some great stories!

BTW. Surveillance video ID'd a 57 year old suspicious man in the theft of valuable instruments of the band Heart.

On additional videos the man was seen carrying two instruments around in New Jersey and he was arrested. He had already sold at least one valuable instruments and some are unaccounted for tonight.

At least they caught the cattle wrestler. HANG 'UM!!!

Alan Paul stated Warren Haynes went to great lengths to locate his stolen red Strat with custom painted red headstock but it was never found.

You may remember Warren using the stolen guitar often in the late 1980's through early 90's.

They recovered Nancy Wilson's stolen custom built purple 🟣 Telecaster. The Gibson Mandolin used by the band for 25 years still missing.
