Warn Your Kids and Grandkids About Ecstasy

Some would say this belongs in Whipping Post, but I do not care. WARN YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS THAT ECSTASY KILLS. Folks, after 20 years in healthcare............I've seen it, firsthand.

Not to discount what you say, but the article gives no detail about how the girl died.
I don't know anything about Ecstasy. This is something that came along after I'd passed my prime era of hipdom.
Was this an over-dose? Did she die from complications of the drug or did she try to fly off a building or something?
My only encounter with Ecstasy was the younger Widespread Panic fans at a WSP/ABB double bill in Birmingham a few years ago. They just seemed to be all touchy-feely-huggy to me. But again, I don't anything about this stuff.
By the way - I'm not arguing with you about Ecstasy or anything. Feel free to educate us.

I'd be most glad to.
In approximately 2002 I was working in the Intensive Care Unit at Kaiser Hospital in San Jose, CA. It's located near the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds. They had a "rave party" there at the Fairgrounds. We had 3 or 4 kids (late teens or early 20's) admitted to ICU that day who had been to the party. All of them had taken Ecstasy.
Two of them came in with body temperatures of 107 or 108. Do I need to tell you that's life-threatening? Those two were on ventilators, in other words, they were not breathing sufficiently on their own. None of them died. I was told that due to the elevated body temps, these two kids and maybe the others would likely suffer lifelong internal organ damage.
Curious, I did a little research. Ecstasy is a combined methamphetamine and hallucinogen. So while it's likely not chemically the same, it's something akin to taking speed and LSD together. Taken in "reasonable" (if there is such a thing) doses, it gives the user an overall euphoric and pleasant experience. However, it is obviously a BAD substance to O.D. on. And how could you possibly know what kind of dose someone has sold you?

to add to rob's post you dont actually know what has been mixed in with what you are taking. so you could be thinking its a mix of something and maybe contain a lot of something else.
i dont fool with it but if you do, make sure you know who you are getting it from. also there are test kits if you want to play and be sure you know what you are playing with.

True. I've never taken MDMA or MDA; but I know people who have, and they made sure it actually was one or both of those drugs they were taking, and not other drugs like PMA.
They also made sure they did not get overheated, or dehydrated if they went out dancing on the drugs.

I agree with you Rob I have witnessed first hand seeing what X did to some of my friends back in the day. Now I will be first to admit I was never any choir boy and tried a lot of substances over the years (regret some but it was part of an experimentation point in my life), but what I saw X do to some of my friends was horrific. I never wanted to try it based on what I witnessed. Granted I never did it fwiw, but damn I saw it take some beautiful people so full of life and transform them to zombie it was really sad. not sure if this is the norm, but it was eye opening to say that least.
Thanks for your input Rob....btw I had been to those fairgrounds many time in my past small world.

i would say more than likely, this person didnt take ectasy....
probably some bath salt type of drug.........
and its interesting that there is a warning about taking this drug when there is a drug that does far more damage and causes far more deaths than ectasy.......
people should really be warned about consuming alcohol before they are warned about taking ectasy......

Even though I'm an alcoholic who knows well the dangers, I'd say that's some pretty twisted logic you're putting forth there. BTW I haven't touched the bottle in over three years.
But at least when I had a swig, I knew what I was getting, and I survived after many years of abuse and am now sober. With ecstasy, you do NOT know what you're getting. And that's what makes it dangerous. Less dangerous than alcohol? Very, very hard for me to understand that viewpoint.

its not flawed logic that im using...
it's data.....
alchohol causes far more deaths per year then ectasy does....
since i cant find the numbers for the united states---here's numbers for the UK
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/horizon/broadband/tx/drugs/survey/
and from this website--
http://thedea.org/statistics.html
"Putting things in perspective:
The death rate for MDMA, assuming that there really were about 60 deaths directly caused by MDMA in 2000, would be roughly 2 in 100,000 users. The death rate from smoking, by contrast, is on the order of 400 per 100,000 users. Even alcohol, America's official "it's not really a drug" drug, nets about 50 deaths per 100,000 users each year:[3]
and when you worked in the ICU----how many people came in due to ecstasy? and how many came in due to alcohol? i would bet there's a large gap between the numbers......
