Well, I realize that about a zillion people have already made the observation that this band just keeps getting better, so I'm going to offer some redundancy, but it's all the TTB's fault....

I had never been to this venue. Very nice outdoor spot - I suspect that they put on a lot of plays there. They had a small general admission lawn section right in front of the stage, then a number of sections of folding plastic seats on lawn, then a big sprawling lawn way back. Some decent eats, long beer lines.

Hot Tuna started at the exact time on the ticket, 6:45. I'll admit that they didn't wow me. I liked Jorma's fingerpicked stuff but his electric playing didn't hit me. They had a fairly short set, maybe 45 minutes.

The Wood Brothers came on next and really kicked things up a notch. They were very uptempo and dynamic, great vocals and harmonies. The stand-up bass-playing brother was the most virtuosic musician in the two opening bands, and his singing brother was really solid and soulful. The drummer doubled on keyboards, very impressive. They were fun. Killer cover of The Band's "Ophelia" to wrap it up. They played maybe from 7:40 to 8:35.

TTB came on after a good half hour break and just killed it. For starters, Derek had a serious crunch in his tone. Overall, this may have been the loudest I have heard him play, certainly in terms of being the loudest player onstage and really cutting through, but also in summoning some serious distortion and feedback.

Here is a setlist that may be like 80% accurate - I'm fuzzy on some of their titles and on the song order.

Laugh About It
Don't Know What It Means
Comin Home (Bonnie & Delaney)
Just As Strange (edit - Right on Time!!)
Get What You Deserve
How Blue Can You Get? (BB King)
Idle Wind
Made Up Mind
Bound for Glory
Sweet Virginia (with Wood Bros) (Stones cover)
I Want More

encore: Let's Go Get Stoned

Some stray observations:

* At the end of "Don't Know What It Means," the sax player usually takes his crazy "out" solo while the band holds down the solid groove underneath. At this show, the rest of the band went "out" during his solo also, pushing it in some really wild directions all at once. Very cool.

* I only really know "Comin Home" from the version on the Clapton Crossroads DVD. Well, this time around, after ending the song, Derek pulled them back into it to do a low key solo that built all the way back up. Nice change-up.

* "Get What You Deserve" was SO ripping, as was "Comin Home." Derek had some serious SNARL in his tone and attack for the riffs on these. I believe it was as an intro to "Get What You Deserve" that he was doing some pre-emptive assault on the slide, just ripping it up with the drummers. The horns took a break during "Get What You Deserve."

* On "How Blue Can You Get" (and something else I forget) both Derek and Susan really played some great loud dynamic blues, straight not psychedelic or "out." Susan played a Les Paul for a few tunes and got a nice honk out of it.

* On "Idle Wind," the keyboard player used a tiny hand-held keyboard that you blow into. Donald Fagen and Stevie Wonder use this thing. Melodica? Melodium? Hooter? It sounded good. Derek really went epic on this song. This one was big. Nice lengthy drum break before returning to full glory.

* "Sweet Virginia" - the Wood brother handled lead vocals, and the band gave it a full big gospel chorus treatment as well as full-on horn section love. It had the joy of a Last Waltz song. I'm a huge Stones fan and really dug this. Interestingly, they STARTED the song with the chorus.

* "Bound for Glory" was an epic one too. Lots of long songs tonight - Idle Wind, this, and I Want More were all quite large and generous. Back up singers got some solo time here - this was where Alecia sang, I think. The band faded the end and Derek did a slow tasty solo, again with the volume quite loud, which I personally like!!!

* I forget what song the keyboard player took some nice soloing during - maybe "Made Up Mind"? - it made me think of the solo section of the live "Do You Feel Like I Do" - minus that mouth-wah thing of course.

* "I Want More" - big, jammy. I think it was this one that Derek broke a string during, and rather than get a new guitar, he simply sat next to the keyboards and changed his own string while the bass and drums carried the groove - nice bass solo here. I've never seen anything like it. I believe it was also in this song that Derek really let loose with some crazy Hendrixian playing, very different, full of fury. I need to hear this show again.

* I can't remember if it was "I Want More" or "Bound for Glory," (pretty sure it was "I Want More") but when the solo first began, Derek played his usual solo, but Susan had the licks down to play harmony lead. This was really interesting to me. It was Allmans-ish. It was not in the song in previous versions. Very surprising and satisfying.

* While I've heard them do "Let's Get Stoned" a bunch and would not have minded something else, they killed it. Knocked it out of the park. Again, back-up singers got some love, handling some verses. Susan hit the last note with pure power.

Derek and Susan were both on their "A" game all night. I still can't get over how loud and clear and aggressive Derek was. He was handling that feedback like Clapton with Mayall.

I think the TTB show probably started at like 9:10 and ended at 10:50, something like that. Whew. What a feast it was.
