One more Gregg story...I'm pretty lucky, meeting and speaking with Gregg on three different occasions throughout the decades, but this one is probably the most cherished because there was some actual "one on one" time with one of my musical idols. There is an incredible music venue in San Diego called "Humphrey's by the bay"....Not only is it located right on San Diego bay but its location is ideal for a few reasons....Kayakers and boaters can literally pull up to the side of the venue and hear and almost see the shows from the comfort of their vessels, the acoustics and seating are perfect and the artists need to walk from the parking lot (where their tour bus is parked) to reach the stage. On this evening (June of '07) Gregg had just performed and I found myself just outside the back entrance on the chance he might stroll by...Well, he did and I approached, hand extended and ready to shake. He greeted me with a smile and I went through the inevitable "Oh, I've seen you here and met you there before" routine while he stood there and smiled. (Believe me, you can rehearse all you want, but when the moment arrives, words are not the easiest things to find)....So we start walking the 75 yards or so towards his Bus when this older fan approaches us with this big stack of records and asks Gregg to sign. Gregg looks at me with this "Really"? kind of expression and signs the first one. The "Fan" then flips to the next album which Gregg signs as well and then a 3rd and a 4th. Exhausting his supply this guy scoots off and Gregg looks at me and says "People, man...people" and shakes his head. I then find my voice and ask something like "Winterland, I was there a few times to see you guys and I can remember Skynyrd, Marshal Tucker & Charlie Daniels all opening for you"..."Oh man" he replied, "That was so long ago" and then silence as we continued to walk, his Bus drawing closer with each step. "I remember this one band that opened for you once that had a guitar player who played while sitting in a chair, 'The Sons of Champlin'" I said. Gregg stopped dead in his tracks, looked me in the eye and said "I remember those guys, Bill Champlin was the guitar player who sang too, those guys were good" he said "San Francisco boys" he continued..."I don't remember jamming with 'em, but we all would come out and listen".....I smiled and said "Well, your recall is better than mine" he laughed and said "I doubt that". I looked up and saw that his bus was just steps away....."The Cow Palace as well" I said..."That place was a barn" he said as he climbed the stairs of the Coach and just like that, he was gone......Three years later at the same venue we spoke again and he signed my ticket....
