I saw Toto live in Charlotte NC in about 1978 and Jeff was fantastic. Well everyone in Toto were advanced and polished musicians. A guitar player friend was with me and said they sounded like a group of studio players. And most of them did do sessions in LA.

Saw John Bonham with Led Zeppelin in 1974. Page's Les Paul sunburst was so beautiful. Fantastic tone. Bonham was really powerful and loud. Sometimes sounded like a fireworks display and once ditched his sticks and played his snare and toms with his hands!

As great as they were (Jeff and John are gone. May they RIP), technically they can't touch the late Buddy Rich. Right off the bat they handicapped themselves by playing with matched grip. In order to really play fast and technically advanced, you must play TRADITIONAL grip like Buddy. And may he RIP.

Butch and Jaimoe!!! Two excellent drummers!

Note Butch plays matched grip like Jeff Porcaro and John Bonham. Jaimoe plays traditional grip like Buddy Rich. That is why Jaimoe always sounded faster on the snare drum and hi-hat than Butch. But Butch was more powerful especially with his bass drum and toms. A great tandem drum team I think was the best we ever had.
