http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/hall-of-fame-pearl-jam-tupac-shakur-yes-lead-nominees-w445147
Pearl Jam
Tupac
Depeche Mode
ELO
Jane's Addiction
Janet Jackson
Journey
The Cars
The Zombies
Yes
Bad Brains
Chaka Khan
Chic
J.Geils Band
Joan Baez
Joe Tex
Kraftwerk
MC5
Steppenwolf
Usually only 5 get it, but there is your list of options for next year.

I definitely like this list. These are my choices:
ELO
The Cars
Journey
Zombies
Steppenwolf
Yes
J. Geils Band
Joan Baez
Mc5
(and Chic, because Nile Rogers has been waiting so long. It's about time! )
[Edited on 10/18/2016 by BarrySmith]

If only 5 get in, I'd say:
Pearl Jam
Jane's Addiction
Journey
Chaka Khan
Joan Baez

Pearl Jam
Journey
Yes
J. Geils Band
Steppenwolf
Hard to leave Joan Baez out, but that is an awful loose definition of rock and roll if she is in there.

Other than "Born to be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride", why put Steppenwolf in? I'm not being snarky, I just don't know anything else about them other than those two, albeit big, hits.

My personal favorite 5 are:
Pearl Jam
Jane's Addiction
J.Geils Band
MC5
The Cars
The 5 I think that are most deserving of the Hall are:
Pearl Jam
The Cars
Journey
Yes
MC5
The 5 I think the Hall will induct are
Pearl Jam
Tupac
Journey
Chaka Khan
The Zombies
They like diversity and covering several decades each year, and that would do it for them.
Still so many greats who have never been nominated:
Iron Maiden
The Black Crowes
Robert Cray
Taj Mahal

My 5;
Jane's Addiction
Yes
Bad Brains
Joan Baez
MC5
Never was a fan of Journey, thought they were talented, but couldn't put together a good song, just some pop drivel. It was hard to leave Pearl Jam out, but I enjoyed Jane's more. And the Bad Brains were a DC staple who started that whole DC scene. There wouldn't be Dave Grohl and Fugazi and all those others if it weren't for Bad Brains.

I would estimate there is zero chance that Pearl Jam or Tupac don't get in.

Lots of great bands got nominated this time
Pearl Jam
Yes
The Zombies
MC5
Bad Brains
That would be my list they only induct 5.

Pearl Jam
Tupac
Yes
Journey
The Zombies
(I'm not sure that Yes and Journey are inducted in the same class. Only enough drama for one of them per class.)

Here's my 5:
PEARL JAM
ELO
JOURNEY
YES
J. GEILS BAND

Hey porkchop bob I love ya, but ... the fact that Yes isn't on your list only proves that it's not just Steppenwolf that you're ... in the dark about ... yeah that's it.

@Rob, agreed on the Baez comment, not much rock nor roll in there...
@Amy, Bad m'f'n Brains indeed, glad to see them on there.
@Zambi, I'm guessing you caught a Bad Brains show or two at 688 or The Metroplex. Man, what a sight to behold. Skins on the wall and around the outside of the pit being a-, and the energy pouring off those short stages, people flying everywhere, and then they'd turn on a dime and go into some wicked reggae - hell yeah!!!!!
Really dug HR's solo gigs as well at the Metroplex. He had quite the almost weekly/ monthly run there for a while.
Jane's
PJ
Bad Brains
MC5
Kraftwerk
EARockForLight

Ha, I mean, at this point, any of those bands could get in. There aren't many big names from the 60s and 70s who haven't gotten in, there won't be those no-brainer from top to bottom RnR induction classes like their once were. I guess if Rush is in, their British opposite number won't be far behind. I don't believe in "ranking" music groups, especially across different genres, but figured those would be the most popular picks by the RnR Hall.
But seriously, tell me about Steppenwolf. I know they were an early heavy rock influence going into he 1970s, but has their catalog stood the test of time other than those 2 songs? I'd say Canned Heat or the Guess Who made a bigger mark.

pearl jam
Tupac
Yes
Journey MC5

Bob you may be right. I know they were huge in their day. Early use of distortion, first use of the term "heavy metal" ... They also had a tune called "The Pusher" where they liberally used the word GD which was quite shocking at the time. A kid in my neighborhood played it at the talent show in junior high. People still talk about that. Mule covered "Stay Off The Grass Sam" a very early proreefer song. There may be some more I'm missing, but I'd imagine they were very influential as one of the first hard rock acts on the radio.

I don't think I'd vote for any of these bands/artists ... but what do I know ...
Meanwhile, still no Little Feat ...

I would estimate there is zero chance that Pearl Jam or Tupac don't get in.
Agreed. These two are the only ones that are sure things.
Big Pearl Jam fan here, so I'm excited for them.
Journey's vocalist issue may keep them out. Look at Skynyrd. Took them YEARS to get in.

Pearl Jam
Tupac
Depeche Mode
ELO
Jane's Addiction
Janet Jackson
Journey
The Cars
The Zombies
Yes
Bad Brains
Chaka Khan
Chic
J.Geils Band
Joan Baez
Joe Tex
Kraftwerk
MC5
Steppenwolf
Usually only 5 get it, but there is your list of options for next year.
that's a tough list and still no grand funk railroad or blue oyster cult or jethro tull or stevie ray vaughan. yikes.
from that list
pearl jam
Depeche mode
yes
janes addiction
ELO
next year I'd put in
mc5
grand funk
jethro tull
the cars
bad brains
the following year after that I'd put in
SRV
journey
def leppard
zombies
j geils
finally the next year
Steppenwolf
soundgarden
kraftwerk
chic
megadeth
there you go. the next 4 years are done. you are welcome HOF

Stevie Ray Vaughan got in a couple of years ago.

But seriously, tell me about Steppenwolf. I know they were an early heavy rock influence going into he 1970s, but has their catalog stood the test of time other than those 2 songs? I'd say Canned Heat or the Guess Who made a bigger mark.
Yes, Born To Be Wild and Magic Carpet Ride were their biggest hits. But mostly because I'm 61 years old, I can tell you that they got significant airplay for quite a few other tunes............they were NOT a "two hit wonder" as you are trying to claim. Try this: Rock Me, Ride With Me, The Pusher, Sookie Sookie, For Ladies Only, Move Over. There are other radio worthy tunes in their catalogue: It's Never Too Late, Hey Lawdy Mama, Who Needs Ya, Snowblind Friend, Tenderness.
They were the first band I can think of (at least one of the first) to incorporate the Hammond B-3 into their sound (they did it before ABB). Not only that, they could PLAY. It's evidenced on Steppenwolf Live, which was a double vinyl LP. It's still available on a single CD. I saw them in the early 70's so I know they were a good live act. And John Kay was a good and charismatic front man and remained so for many years through the band's many incarnations. You could put him out there with any bunch of players and call it Steppenwolf. And he wrote a LOT of good tunes. I saw them at the local County Fair 15 years later..........they were still good! I was actually looking forward to seeing them only two years ago as an opener for Boston but they cancelled due to a contract dispute. Sadly, from what I've heard, John Kay is nearly completely blind now.
Let me add that their "Monster" record was a quite groundbreaking effort as it was one of the early seriously political records in rock and roll with tunes like the title cut and Draft Resistor. And musically it's a very good record.
Steppenwolf is in as far as I am concerned.
Oh, just an FYI: John Kay is not done yet. I just looked at the Steppenwolf website. He's got a solo acoustic show this Sunday 10/23 in Santa Barbara, CA:

Steppenwolf and Yes are Rock N Roll Bands. Those 2 are more than worthy, Steppenwolf was one of my fav guitar rock bands, Songs like Who Needs Ya, Hey Lawdy Mama, Ride With Me, Screamin Night Hog, Sookie Sookie, and Move Over are timeless rock riff tunes. There are deeper cuts off each album too. The lyrics of Monster still holds true to today's world.
Yes with Steve Howe was mad skill talent music. Sometimes trippy and a fusion of their own. Some bands are dated and reflect a period in music, Some were where it was at in their own time. Some pop rock, some folk rock, there is arguably a righteous place in a RnR" HOF, Some sh#t music has no right even being mentioned.
Tupac? WTF? Why am I even bothering?

I love Jane's Addiction, and they were wildly influential. I think their body of work is very small, but that didn't stop the Sex Pistols or Nirvana from getting in.
I think Kraftwerk will get in for being innovative and influential also. Can Tangerine Dream be far behind? Lol
