"The" Most Epic ABB Song Ever Made ?

Lots of songs of theirs are Great, but whats the Most Epic of all ?
Dreams; with its spacey background
Whippin' Post; with its eery bass riff
Midnight Rider; as a popular tune
Mellissa; as a beautiful ballad
Mountain Jam; weaving in & out of the Donovan classic
Cross to Bear: as the Greatest Blues number
Don't Keep me Wonderin;'w/ its offbeat sound
One Way Out; the Great Boogie ending to a Night
Blue Sky; as a great uplifting guitar weave
'Liz Reed; & all the other Dickey instrumental compositions
or any of the other early ABB stuff.....
theres so many...but which song stands alone the most ???

Statesboro - "signature tune"
Stormy Monday - along with Statesboro, the tune that first got me (and supplied part of my screen name)
Liz Reed - catchy melody, fusion jazz, high energy
Whipping Post - of you have to ask why, you'll never know
Dreams - for the beautiful, melodic guitar solos
Blue Sky - see above
Mntn Jam, especially the post drums section

No matter how good or bad the band was, I never heard them do a less than stellar Whipping Post. I think there is a reason is has been the closer or encore of choice so many times.

+1
here's a pretty epic version imo...

I believe that Whipping Post is THE signature song. Statesboro Blues is a cover.
Hard for many here to fathom, but I think Ramblin Man must be given some consideration. This is the bands only top 10 hit and the song that introduced many, many folks to the band and their music. On the heels of the success of Ramblin Man, the ABB became the biggest band in the world for a period of time.

Perhaps it might be considered too recent (whatever that means), No One to Run With I think should be in the discussion.
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

The one started and ended the journey on the road that goes on forever...
"Trouble No More"
Mike

Using the definition of epic that includes the length of the tale, I guess it would be Mountain Jam.
However sometime about 5 or so years ago someone decided that the word "epic" needed to be used every third sentence. No offense to the original poster, but that word has to fade out sometime soon.

That was an epic post!

but that word has to fade out sometime soon.
Not soon enough...
And when it does...THAT will TRULY be epic!

Nobody Knows.

Didn't you old guys start saying "dude" like 40 years ago? We're stuck with that...:P
Oh, and to the topic, Dreams.

Epic topic alright -- & those epic 90s, I mean 90s on Epic label ya -- wait...
answer to ? -- Studio, I agree w/shavian -- a song of epic (seriously) power & majesty
Live, the timeless 55-min hurricane of epic brilliance known as WP/MJ, 3/13/71, from FE/EAP albums

Going by Webster's definition "extending beyond the usual or ordinary, especially in size or scope ", then I would offer over half the ABB library...
But if it narrows down to synonyms like "heroic, grand, monumental, massive, imposing" etc. then I can think of none more qualified than Mountain Jam

You Don't Love Me does it for me, Blue Sky from the Stonybrook recording is up there too.

I believe that Whipping Post is THE signature song. Statesboro Blues is a cover.

Exactly. Ramblin' Man was the key that opened the door to a whole new world of music for many of us.
As for me as far as signature songs written by the band I'll go for Blue Sky, Whipping Post, Dreams, Jessica and Liz. Too many to make a definitive decision!!!

The whipping post from lAFE is certainlyy epic for pure length and how many places they take it but Mtn Jam will always be the most epic for me
Epic moment....Berkeley Greek Theater 9/5/20013 Dreams -> Whipping Post -> Mtn Jam Encore Layla

I think the EAP "One Way Out" is probalby the perfect blues-rock performance.
It gets in and gets out with real grit and intensity from the jump. Greath rhythm section, great guitar work throughout, perfect tight solos, and very cool appropriate vocals.
A perfect tune.

haha the previous overuse of the word 'Epic' was long before my time,I wasn't aware of that.I just thought it was a good word.
How about;
"The Most 'Greatest' ABB song ever Made. nahh! reading the above definition 'epics' not a bad choice here.
Epic guitarists..epic sounding band, ABB...epic drummers....many epic songs.
But a song of truly Epic proportion is the real question here.
...a true Epic instrumental- 'High Falls' ,'Liz Reid, (I guess one has to see Dickey in order to hear High Falls played again,I've not seen ABB do that one for a long time)

"Epic"
"In memory of Elizabeth Reed"
No doubt

No matter how good or bad the band was, I never heard them do a less than stellar Whipping Post. I think there is a reason is has been the closer or encore of choice so many times.
^^^
This.
I also love blue sky, IMOER, Stormy Monday, dreams, ain't wasting time no more, Melissa, Midnight Rider, Statesboro blues, YDLM, DWYNM>Cross to bear, Jessica, HotLanta, Jessica, and mountain jam.

For me, it is an easy choice - the original version of "Jessica" from the Brothers and Sisters album.

Whippin' Post can't top that. It chronicles not just Gregg's life, but the band's also in the lean, mean days. It is epic, iconic and has the legendary status of other epic songs like Stairway to Heaven or Johnny B Goode, Satisfaction, Smoke on the Water, Get It While You Can, pick any successful band and you will find something epic in there. All of them have something that makes them totally recognizable.
Whippin' Post, no doubt about it.

Ain't Waistin Time No More.....Has it all....Youth ...fast and reckless living...top to bottom grab it all for there is no tomorrow . The bands story
Statesboro Blues...grabs you and gets your immediate attention we have arrived.
Eliz Reed....combines all their power rock-jazz-blues....and takes it to the moon.
Blue sky.....If you ride a bike you will understand
Melissa....Because that's my daughters name

If someone was to have told the band that "this is last song you will ever perform and the last time you will ever touch your instrument, make it count"-- I think the result would have sounded something like the Fillmore Mountain Jam. That's my pick.

Don't ya almost think with Duane's musical talents gifted unto
that the songs didn't just like come to him ?><
Mtn Jam (extended) gets my vote
circa 1971
Summer 2000 tour ( DT-JH)

Im going to mix "best song made" with best song played and say that Liz Reed from the 2009 beacon show with Clapton on I believe 3/20 is for me the best. Also hats off to Lee for mentioning No One Left To Run With. The version from the 3/20 United Palace show in 2010 is the best rendition I have Heard......which brings me to another point. I did not attend the last show in October (was there for second to last) but I recently received the CDs. Great show but based on side by side comparisons of the music so far I am leaning toward my top two shows I have listened to as the 3/20/09 Clapton show and the 3/20/10 United Palace shows. More on this later as I continue to dissect the 10/27/14 and 10/28/14 shows. A conclusion I am coming to though is that some guests help take or push the band to new levels.

And...The Winner is:............?? ?

WP

I think it has to be Whipping Post... lots of "epic" songs but that's the Allman Brothers at their best... Fillmore East!
